World of Warcraft: Buy Burning Crusade or wait for Linch King?

I just started World of Warcraft and have been having fun. I bought the regular game.

The Burning Crusade expansion pack is on sale at Amazon this week for $20. My question is, I also heard there's an upcoming expansion called The Wrath of the Lich King. So should I skip getting Burning Crusade and just wait for the Lich King expansion or will I ultimately need Burning Crusade anyway, to get to the higher levels?

Any ideas?

You'll want Burning Crusade to get you from 60-70. Lich King will then get you from 70-80.

Ah, so they build upon one another. That's what I was wondering. I thought it was possible that Lich King would replace Burning Crusade and take you from 60-80, but good to know I was wrong. I'll grab it while it's cheap! Thanks Groucho.

I would have though TLK would have all the Burning Crusade stuff in it, wouldn't it? Especially if it needs BC for anything.

Now, if you wanted to be at 70 when TLK comes out, then you would definitely need BC.

Everquest does that sort of thing, because they are desperate for customers. I wouldn't expect that from Blizzard, though, at least not at release time. I'm sure at some point down the line they will release a Battle Chest with everything, though.

I believe that you would want to pick up BC if you are planning on playing WotLK (which probably won't be out until next fall at the earliest). It sounds like the new starting levels in WotLK will expect players to at least be in the 68-69 level range. So you'll need BC to get there.

This is a good assumption.

Still, Blizzard is always agressive about getting new customers so I suspect there would be some way for a Lich King purchaser to access the content without strictly requiring BC. Perhaps by opening up some sections of BC to all users for leveling etc. Anyway, unless your desperate, seems better to wait and see. Or at least wait till you've done everything you want to do in the original game, and then if LK still isn't out, buy BC to keep yourself busy.

I'd wait until you are level 58, then buy TBC.

Leveling up must feel like a ghost world

There are some advantages to having Burning Crusade before 58

Two I can think of:
-You can get a port to shattrath and set your hearthstone there which makes travel easier due to portals
-You can get your skills up over 300 much earlier: my herbs is usually 375 by 50 or so.
Nothing critical, and I expect it's going to be universally available for 20 or less (just as the full game is now) so no rush

Also, the 2 new beginner zones (for draenei and blood elves) are MUCH easier to level up in (lots and lots and lots more quests). Even if you don't start as one of those races, you can go to those zones for easier leveling up to 20.
