At this point, I think this is a good thing. Bungie shouldn't still be focusing on Halo anymore, and a little distance from Microsoft will only help that.

And more specifically from Bungie:

As you have no doubt read on the web today, Microsoft Corp. and Bungie Studios, have reached an unprecedented and exciting agreement – starting immediately, Bungie will become an independent company and will retain a long-term publishing agreement with Microsoft Game Studios for “Halo” titles. The new structure became effective on Oct. 1, 2007. The official blurb follows, but since you’re a valuable part of our community, we thought we’d sum it up simply and concisely.

Bungie has long been built on creativity, originality and the freedom to pursue ideas. Microsoft agreed, and rather than stifle our imagination, they decided it was in both our best interests to unleash it. We’ll continue to make Xbox 360 games, and we’ll continue to make amazing games for MGS. In that regard, nothing has changed. All that has changed is that now Bungie Studios is once again, the property of the folks of Bungie Studios. Microsoft is and will continue to be, a brilliant, inventive and creatively collaborative publishing partner. Practically speaking, nothing has changed and you guys won’t see much, if any difference, for a while unless you come to work for us, that is – we’re hiring at http://www.bungie.net/inside/jobs.aspx

In other words, Microsoft's interference was too much to the point where their developers were considering leaving and starting a new studio.

Well I played it through with 4 friends for about 5 hours on the day it came out. The guy who bought was really the only one who was still trying to like it after that. We tried all the different vehicles and modes, and in particular the hovercraft and planes felt like they're going through molasses and were not fun. The weapons I didn't find interesting as well. We never did go back to it after that so it's fair to say we didn't play it long enough to review the game.

Anyway, aside from that, I'm generally just tired of the cliched opinion that when Rare were bought from Nintendo by MS they went from golden superstars who could do nothing wrong, to talentless bums overnight. I mean some of their games pre MS were great, but definitely not all, and well Viva Pinata is excellent, and Kameo has it's fans (and detractors).

Perfect Dark 0 also had potential, but I think Rare really suffered from not having the experience of making a previous-gen FPS (on GC/PS2/Xbox). I mean, there was a lot of innovation in console FPS during that gen, but PZ0 ended up a little archaic in some ways.

Finally, I think the Halo series is excellent and I hope Bungie go on to keep making great games whereever they choose to. Also, not a Rare hater, Blast Corps is one of my favourite ever games, and I blistered many a thumb on Goldeneye multi!

If this means they are going to make games for other platforms then for sure this is the final nail in the coffin for an xbox 3. Bungie exclusivity was the only thing that put Xbox in the black and now when MS is suffering from a multi-billion dollar hardware "recall" and a disc recall for their most profitible game, there's no doubt 360 will not make money this round, and I doubt they will try again... they are at the will of stockholders after all.

I'm not to concern about the breakup as I am with the disappointment about the Halo movie being shelved. There are conflicting reports as to why, one side it's the budget and the other it's how the profit/percentage is broken down.

It's also been suggested is the fact video game based movies don't have the same success as comic book ones (Doom and Transformers). To make it a double whammy the rumor has it the "Gears" movie project might suffer the same fate.

It's a real shame because you know either or both would do well especially Halo. The sheer mentioning of the name across the big screen would be enough to generate allot of interest. But won't happen due to a small group of old farts crying over a million here or there.

Called it MS's response of "We haven't made such an announcement and we celebrate Halo" to the question of "are you splitting with Bungie?" was equivalent to "yup."

That's crazy talk. Have you seen how many more software unites across the board the 360 sells? don't know if it's the head start it got, or the gamer points awarded, but it's around for a long time, and in my opinion is the clear cut winner of the hi-def gaming console war for this go 'round.

It would be cool to see Bungie do a handheld game on DS or PSP. I bet their creative guys have some cool ideas gestating. Killzone made a pretty good transition to PSP also.

Re: Gamespot, well I'm not actually their biggest fan but at the time they seemed to make some reasonable points in calling into question the original source of the rumour. My bad . Anyway, on 1up yours, well it was still recorded before the announcement I believe, but either they had their own info, or they are better at sensing the way the wind is blowing, because they managed to not look foolish .
