Keep Going...

I would advise you to spend a little time leveling before you "keep going" though...

Good luck!

Ok, I think I'll jump on the Etrian Odyssey bandwagon also, seeing as how I just walked into a store and saw that the price of the game has now dropped to $29.99 CDN. Take away from that the couple of bucks in store credit I have left there and it's $27.99. Apparently, according to Amazon.com, this game has now been discontinued, and I guess it won't drop in price any further.

Looks like this game has now been discontinued. I saw a few for $29.99 CDN at an HMV here in Toronto yesterday. Just to be safe, I'm going to pick it up today. The only places I've ever seen them selling at here were at EB Games and HMV. The game seems to have dried up at most/some HMVs, and I haven't seen it at my local EBs in a while either.

I got my littlest brother hooked on the game.

He started playing it and then called me that evening bemoaning the fact that, "A butterfly kicked my ass."

He thinks it is also really hard but agrees it kind of hooks you to keep up the grind. He is also only 13 so he never played the grinding RPGs that i grew up with.

Nice!

I'm in the middle of the fif stratum right now, going back and forth from exploring that to trying to get a few quests done and also refighting previous bosses in hopes of good rare drops. I was playing it in the car the other night on the was to the symphony and my girlfriend says "You're STILL playing that game?!" Has it really been that long?

I just picked this up today at Gamestop used for 25. It has the manual and everything, and they didn't have it new so there you go. I only know about this game from this thread, but I'm excited to get into it later today after work.

Do people have any non-spoiler tips to increase my enjoyment of the game. I don't have a lot of "dungeon-crawler" experience except for maybe Vagrant Story which I don't remember being good at due to not really knowing what to do, and getting stuck somewhere and giving up.

It is really pretty self-explanatory with little chance of getting lost. Just be ready for the grind.

The important thing is to start out with a decent party. Have a heavy hitter, a medic, and an alchemist. Then pick two other classes you like. I run with a Landsknekt, Dark Hunter (the front line), Alchemist, Troubadour, Medic (the back line).

Oh, so the grind is fun? I didn't mind leveling up in old games too much. However I did enjoy breaking it up in different towns and villages. I'm assuming there are no new towns or villages. So other than different areas of the dungeon, what keeps the game exciting?

See, I HATE all the towns and villages in RPGs (especially modern ones, ugh), I consider them needless, boring downtime from killing monsters and finding treasure. Yeah, Etrian Odyssey is basically all dungeon crawling.. the cartography adds a bit to it as well, as well as the quest system.

Really? You even hated them in older RPG's? I don't know I like going into people's houses and stealing stuff out of their cupboards. I like interacting with characters, and I also enjoy leveling up my characters. I do like to have a story as well.

Is the game beatable? I probably will find all this out when I play it, but being bored at work I figured I would ask this question. Believe me, I don't mind grinding. I have gotten my characters up to level 99 in FF3, Chrono Trigger, and FF7. (I know you hate FF7 Pixy, but I didn't find it that bad. FF3 was my introduction to RPG's back when I was in 8th grade so I don't have an insane amount of RPG experience.)

I'm just trying to get a feel for the game. Everyone here seems to enjoy it so much that I'm sure I'll find it highly addictive.

OK, I'm at about a level 4, and I can already see the appeal. This game is really fun. I love quests and mission based games, when they aren't flying a hard to control plane around.

Level 4 already? And you just picked it up today?! Dang, how long have you been playing?

I assume he means his characters are level 4 - not he has reached level 4 of the dungeon.

At least i hope not because i have level 16 characters who are getting owned on level 3 of the dungeon.

Yes, I definitely meant my characters are at level 4. I just got into the first level, and I get poisoned which is killer. I still don't have anything to deal with the poison so I'm going to try to level up a little more. Wow the game is really hard. I have already died once so now I'm definitely more careful. I got ambushed by poison things when I went to "rest."

No, I don't mind them so much in older RPGs since they're not as mind-numbingly time consuming. Towns in modern RPGs can take an hour or more to run through.. including talking to people and searching for items (Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata are both guilty of this as recent examples). Yes, Etrian Odyssey is very beatable.. I've said it MANY times in this thread but the game is only truly hard in the beginning, if you can get past the first stratum, you can get through the rest of the game.

Thanks for clearing it up, spainlinx0 - I thought I was doing something wrong.

I just beat the Fenrir, so now I'm on the second stratum! Pixy, doesn't it get harder and harder? I'm past the first stratum and the first gels I met pack a lot of wallop. (And here I thought my characters had a high enough attack level... don't even get me started on the first FOE here).

It does get harder, but you're better prepared for it at that point. Through the first stratum you have no/few skills, no/few items, etc. and you're just learning the ropes, learning your characters, etc. At least, that's how I felt while playing the game.

Is there a benefit to leveling up more than your first five characters? Should you have one or two of each type registered? Should you be leveling up more than five people at a time? I think my problem is that I have a character, I want him to learn everything, but then he's not getting focused and powerful in one area. For example, my Landsknekt, should I focus on swords or axes, or give levels to both. Should I max out a few skills, or try to spread it out among all of them. I imagine it really is up to the player, but I don't want to get 10 hours in, and realize I allocated points poorly.

What does resetting your points do? It says it sets you back 10 levels and you can reallocate your points. Do you also lose 10 skill points for the 10 levels you drop back?

Notes From the Labyrinth...

Well, after spending an inordinate amount of time doing some leveling on the 20th floor, it appears that the characters can't progress any higher than level 70. All 5 of my characters are apparently not earning any more XP. The character classes in question are Landsknecht, Protector, Medic, and Alchemist.

[sigh]. I was actually really hoping to make it to level 90. That would have allowed me to max out a couple useful skillsets on each character. Oh well. I guess I can focus on simply completing the game now (waitaminute, I don't have a maxed out Hexer or Ronin yet and can still continue power leveling on floor 20. Hmmm.....)

@spainlinx0:
My recommendation when first starting out is to try and focus a given character in a particular "track". The exception to this would be the Medic, because he/she needs a lot of different skills, but not inordinate amounts of depth in any one specific skill.

For Landsknechts, making one into an axe specialist is pretty easy and pays off well (I have one). Stunner is a good, cheap skill. 2-Hit is also a great skill to try and max out (for any Landsknecht) IMHO.

For Alchemists, I have had really good luck with focusing on one "school", coupled with maxing out "TP Up" and "TP Regen". After seriously advancing in that "school" try and go with something radically different (e.g., start with Ice & then go to Fire).

I wouldn't worry about getting "10 hours into it" and freaking out that your choices were wrong. The game is more forgiving than that.

For comparison sake, my party consists of the following (all Level 70 now):
(1) Protector, skill points have been scattered across a few fields.
(2) Landsknechts. One is an "Axe Specialist" whose main skills are Stunner & 2-Hit and the other is a "Sword Specialist" who has focused on "multi-hit" skills such as Allslash
(1) Medic who has skill points scattered across the board, along with TP Regen and TP Up. The skills I use /have used a lot are Refresh, Salve, Cure (some Cure 1 and some Cure 3), Unbind, and am beginning to use Immunize a lot more lately.
(1) Alchemist who has maxed out Fire Up, Ice Up, TP Up, and TP Regen. Along with 4 points each for Fire and Ice, along with maxed out Flame & corresponding Ice Skill, and a couple points each in Inferno and corresponding Ice Skill. It is fun to inflict 900+ points of damage on a single enemy via use of a maxed out Flame spell...

@i-bystander: Another interesting point, is that yes, the game will get slightly harder, but I agree with Pixy in that the first few levels are the toughest because you are attempting to bootstrap the party. Party selection, along with VERY conservative play, and good skill selection are critical for the first few character levels. W/r/t later floors, my advice is to spend more time than you think you need simply leveling up on already known floors before venturing into brand new areas.

@everyone:
What are your current party/character specs?

- Existing jobs will have brain new artwork.
- Battles will be much more visually exciting.
- FOEs will have new rules and new types.
- The director is Komori (the writer of EO1, Devil Summoner PS2 and Princess Crown), and she says they decided to make a sequel when they looked into the template and realized they could improve the balance of the calculations and skills, as well as brushing up the existing formula.
- There are two settings this time: the Sekaiju as well as the flying castle.
- You can create a total of 30 charcters this time.
- They have added a quicksave function for saving in the middle of dungeons. (YAY)
- For map creation, there are now 3 different colors you can use.
- There are also more icons and arrows to use.
- When buying equipment now, the character status is displayed so you can see how effective they are before buying. (YAY!)
- Game is 70% complete, release date will be announced soon.
- The character design, monster design and sound are handled by the same staff as the first game. (KOSHIRO COME TO ME!!!!!!!!!)

Just added this Etrian Odyssey to my order of Zack and Wiki's from Amazon. Not sure how I missed this little gem but after seeing EO2 scans on gaf I gotta get this baby! So if anyone is still looking Amazon at least still has it, no luck on EB.

Very cool on EO2... although the thing could be a full year off and i'd probably still be working my way through the first one.
