So I got a new computer and downloaded a newer version of MAME.

Some of the games work perfectly.

But others don't work at all. When I type in "MAME (name of game)" from the command line, it says that certain files associated with the game are missing.

That's really weird, because those games always worked perfectly well on my previous computer.

Does anyone have an explanation for this?

are you still using your old games with the new version?

a lot of the games go through changes with new releases of MAME. roms are added/removed/changed in the game's zip files.. that could be why.

use a utility like Clrmamepro to check and see the status of your roms versus your binary.

That is why I stopped updating my mame stuff; I got to the point where I was happy with my collection of working classic roms, and that's where I'm staying.

I never understood why the roms would ever need to be changed. They are supposed to be the exact instructions from inside the machine; why would they ever need to make changes to those? I understand updating the mame program to handle new stuff, but once a game is dumped to roms, why would that change?

Thanks for answering.

Yes, I'm still using the old roms.

It was easy to find roms 8 years ago. Now, some of them don't seem to be available anywhere.

I agree with you. It seems odd that they would change the roms.

All of my games are from the 1970s and 1980s.

I bought a new computer, and it can't run the older version of MAME. That's why I downloaded a newer version.

I still have my old computer. But it would be nice if I could play the games on my new computer.

Hey guys...sorry - but emulation is still a shady area and we'd prefer that it not be discussed here.

I was hoping there would be a poll since this is a grundle thread.

Re: So I got a new computer and downloaded a newer version of MAME.

Holy threadbump!

It's been at least a dozen years since I even thought about MAME. Watching High Score on Netflix recently must've reignited the desire to mess around with it again. I just finished a 57GB download of MAME ROMS 0.177, and was wondering...what are people using for a front-end these days? I did find the MAME .0224b front-end update - is that the best way to go? And how do you keep up with latest ROM updates - all of the previous resources I had (primarily Tiptonware back in the day) are gone, and even 0.177 seems to be about four years outdated. Not even sure I'll do much with it - I always wanted to build a MAME cabinet but never had - and still lack - a good place to put one.

EDIT: OK, i found the ROMs up to 0.224 on Internet Archive, but geez - another 72GB download? I'm pushing my bandwidth limit for the month, so i think it's gonna have to wait. Was hoping to just fill-in-the-blanks.

Yeah, I've got three different builds of MAME myself for this very reason.

On a related note, mapping controls on MAME is a freaking bitch. Any tips?

Wish there was a how-to wiki on MAME.

^^ Memory could be escaping me, but I think a solid front end will mostly map the majority of roms for you. I do recall having to go in to several games and "re-do" them manually.
