skate. (Anyone getting this?)

I think it comes out tomorrow and it looks pretty good. I downloaded the demo and really enjoyed it. It seems realistic but still cool and edgy looking. The videos show some cool enviorments and wicked wipeouts.
Might trade something in for this...

I'm really looking forward to this game

Eric D. 09-12-07 03:17 AM

I liked the demo as well and will be getting it soon.

boredsilly 09-12-07 06:40 AM

I think the demo was interesting, but at the end of the day I think I prefer the wacky over the top ways of Tony Hawk.

Skate was a little too stiff for me, but I bet it would be fun if I dedicated myself to learning it. Just don't see that happening.

Shagrath 09-12-07 07:32 AM

I am all over skate.! Had it pre-ordered over at GS ever since I played the demo. I can't wait to online free skate with my Live buddies! This game is gonna eat up so much time just fucking around.

I'm buying this specifically because I'm tired of the Tony Hawk series. This demo (and game) was a breath of fresh air for the skateboard genre. Really looking forward to it.

flair 09-12-07 09:30 AM

I will buy it as soon as it comes out (tomorrow?)

Sebring98 09-12-07 10:54 AM

I'll be getting it when it comes out for the PS3 (9/24).

funkyryno 09-12-07 11:04 AM

The demo was pretty cool. Definetely has a steep learning curve.

The in-game advertising was a little annoying, but no more so than in the Tony Hawk series.

I can see that, but coming from a guy who only really put some serious time into one Tony Hawk Game (either TH2 or 4, can't remember) I'm ready to come back to the series.

If you've even only played every third game, I can understand being tired of the mechanics of that game.

UncleGramps 09-12-07 12:20 PM

Playing the Tony Hawk Proving Ground demo this morning really highlighted the differences between the Tony Hawk games and skate. I definitely prefer the realism and simple controls of skate, but with the flood of fall games, I'll have to rent it rather than buy it.

Joeboo835 09-12-07 12:47 PM

wish there was a demo for PS3 out.

That said i'll be buying it on the 24th for sure.

darkside 09-12-07 12:55 PM

Really need to try it. The concept sounds good, but my patient for a skateboarding game may not be good enough for it.

That's the thing. I've really only played THPS2 and 4 extensively, and was really turned off by some of the over the top stuff in the later ones (ollie the moon, ollie an earthquake, etc...). The Tony Hawk games aren't bad, and they certainly are fun, but skate just feels like a laid back free-roamer that is a little more real.

Decadance 09-12-07 03:00 PM

Yeah, I will be picking this up on release (the EA site lists the 14th as release date). After playing the tony hawk demo I was highly underwelmed. The graphics are poor, the game play is nearly exactly the same as previous versions, and the ability to constantly link tricks is just completely unrealistic. The realism and graphics of skate. are much more appealing. Certainly it has a bit of learning curve, but when you pull off a trick or an awesome transfer, you get a sense of accomplishment.

bee_01 09-12-07 03:18 PM

I stopped playing games where accomplishing a simple jump was an awe inspiring feat back in my NES days.

UncleGramps 09-12-07 11:35 PM

I think I've played through the demo 4 times now. What I like about it (besides the great control scheme - once you get past the learning curve) is how much fun it is just to mess around in the skate park and see what you're capable of doing. In other words, it feels as much like a toy as it does a game, and even if you're not finishing an objective, you can just make up your own goals and have fun. I can't imagine what it'll be like when the whole city is available. If I enjoy the game enough while I'm renting it, I might scrape together some unwanted games and trade them in for my own copy since it seems like the replay value will be pretty high.

I've read that it'll take about 10 minutes real-time to skate from one side of the city to the other. That right there is fucking awesome!

rocketsauce 09-14-07 02:21 PM

Anyone get this yet? Looking for some impressions

Gamefly just sent it out today, so hopefully I'll have it on Monday.

starseed1981 09-14-07 02:30 PM

I'm interested, but since I've overloaded on Tony Hawk for the past several years I think I'll wait til it hits the bargain bin. But everything I've seen on it looks great.

Shagrath 09-14-07 02:52 PM

Picked it up today and played it for about an hour before I had to come in to work. It's everything the demo was and 1000000000 times more! The city is so fantastically set up to be both realistic and skateable. If anyone wants to throw down some free skate, add me.

Decadance 09-14-07 07:38 PM

I have encountered a problem with my copy that some others on the xbox forum have had. My copy locks up following the wallride pro challenge. You complete it, it starts the initial save and locks up.

thegame370 09-17-07 12:47 PM

This game is an absolute blast. You can actually just skate anywhere you'd like and just look for spots you can try your skills on. You can get very creative.
Also, uploading your replays and photos online for other to view and rate is pretty cool.

Decadance 09-17-07 08:31 PM

In an update, I actually completed the wallride pro challenge, I did some other stuff in the game, came back to it, and it let me complete it with a save.

dizzlle01 09-17-07 08:36 PM

waiting for a price drop. If I get it, it will go to the pile of backlog I have as I am playing Warhawk now and Halo 3 will be out in a week or so.

asianxcore 09-17-07 08:42 PM

How is this game for people who aren't good at skateboarding games?

I enjoyed the Tony Hawk series, but the later games in the series felt like a punishment if you weren't good at skateboarding games.

Well the bag of tricks available in the game are all in all pretty basic, but with that said, executing them and landing them can be somewhat challenging. Its technical no doubt, but very fun nonetheless.

UncleGramps 09-17-07 10:43 PM

Got my copy from Gamefly today and got a good couple of hours in. Definitely a great game. The video editing tools are pretty simple and easy to use but you can do a lot with them. I uploaded a few videos to the EA servers and now I'm just waiting for the confirmation email before I post a link. For me, editing the videos is almost as much fun as the actual skating.

Edit: Here's the best clip I've made so far: http://skate.share.ea.com/profiles/2...ts/162469.aspx

xmiyux 09-18-07 07:54 AM

I'll check out your video this afternoon Gramps. I may have to work on one of my own.

I also got the game from Gamefly and have found myself interested in buying it as well. It is tough, especially if you are used to Tony Hawk style games. The timing is completely different than the Hawk games. It is also significantly more realistic. My little brother who travels about every weekend to go to various skate parks is completely in love with Skate versus Tony Hawk.

It is also a really deep game. I have had a blast setting session markers and then reskating a certain line over and over trying to perfect it.

edit: Sweet clip Gramps. Good to see you honestly showing off your car dodging skills.

It's a very addictive game, both in terms of hitting a perfect line and in editing your clips just right. Both elements have a learning curve but can be very rewarding if you put time into it. It's great to see a solid competitor for the Tony Hawk series, and since the games are so different in terms of style, controls, and feel, I think they will each appeal to their own segment of the market. Personally, I don't have much desire to go back to Tony Hawk after delving in to the more realistic skate. The simple fun of hitting a few grinds just right is more rewarding to me than doing a 50-foot 1080 over a homeless guy.

As for my clip, I didn't even see the car coming until it was too late. I love the sound the board makes as it spins down the street. The fact that you can only have 3 uploaded clips at any time is a bit of a bummer, but it's still a great feature. I'm also curious to try out the multiplayer modes.

skate. looks amazing especially considering how fake Tony Hawk games became after the first one. This game looks so good - I loved the demo definitely going to get this when I get the money.

Joeboo835 09-20-07 06:52 PM

WHen is this out for the PS3? I've seen both the 24th and 25th. When will it be availablein stores?

Thanks,

Joe
