Can someone explain the Gamecube progressive scan to me?

Okay, so the Wii is the first console I've owned in a long time. Today I picked up the original Metroid Prime for $8 to see if I like the style of gameplay before I buy Metroid Prime 3.

When I started the game, I chose progressive scan, but I don't know if the game is supposed to be 16:9 in this mode. Any help? I am very confused.

Metroid Prime offers progressive scan but it's not 16:9.

Most of my GameCube games offer Progressive Scan, but are still in a 4:3 aspect ratio...

Progressive scan has nothing to do with being 16:9.
