Just wondering how far into the game I am. I just...
Spoiler:
got that move that lets you jump super far and bounce between walls after getting the plasma rifle. I think I have to go back to the sky city now.

Maybe halfway? There are three leviathans you have to destroy, those are the major landmarks.

Cool, thanks. I have to start playing more. Eternal Sonata comes out this week.

There are two other Metroid Prime games that can be found on the cheap and played on the Wii with a regular controller.

But, in my opinion, it's not gimmicky...it's intuitive. You point at the thing you want to shoot and you shoot it. Great implementation of the tried and true mouse/keyboard combination. Perhaps an improvement on same.

I'm at the first boss battle. It took 10-15 minutes, but he killed me. My hand was hurting too bad to try again.
A general tip for boss battles: as soon as it begins, scan the boss. This will give you a general hint as to how to defeat them. If you hit (1) you'll get a more detailed description that should point you the right way.

Thanks. I played the first Prime, but skipped the second.

I agree that pointing and shooting makes sense, but I guess it just doesn't feel like a big improvement over using a regular controller to me.

I'm not sure what it is, but for some reason, I'm just not feeling it for Metroid Prime 3.

Groucho 09-17-07 10:35 AM

I forgot to mention: there's an option to change the lock-on to work like the previous games, so that you automatically shoot at whatever is locked on. Might work better?

Yeah, I may try that. I switched to advanced before starting the game after reading that the standard setting was too slow.

Having played the game a bit, I'm wondering why you wouldn't want to shoot at what's locked on. I guess I'll find out tonight.

Noonan 09-19-07 06:57 AM

I was starting to get a bit bored with this one until recently.
Spoiler:
Metroids!! Those things are hard as hell. I just finished the first part at the Pirate Homeworld and am now making my way back to SkyTown. Can someone tell me what there is to get at the Valhalla? I'm assuming it's all extra stuff. I already got two missile packs but need to get more power cells to get further in.

PixyJunket 09-19-07 07:02 AM

Spoiler:
You think the Metroids are hard? :(

There is something important in the Valhalla.. eventually.

Noonan 09-19-07 07:12 AM

Spoiler:
Maybe not hard but kinda freaky when they come at you. I was never in danger of dieing but fighting 2 or 3 of them in a tight space was tricky.

Additions (or updates) from the last list are marked with a tilde.

The game uses your standard WiiConnect24 code to connect to other owners of Metroid Prime 3 to trade friend tokens for unlocking extras. You MUST turn this on in your Metroid Prime 3 extras menu first and foremost.. then you will have access to your friend list and anyone on there with a copy of the game will appear in black. Clicking on a name allows you send a token to that person. Be sure to send a token in return for receiving one! Also, if you are adding people to your list, be sure to indicate exactly who you are adding (or if you are adding everyone) so that the corresponding parties can add you in turn.

If you do not own the game and you're on this list, please let me know so I can avoid clutter, we have a thread for general friend code trading. I tried to discern from previous posts on whether someone had bought it or not, but a couple of them were ambiguous and I might have added a couple in sheer haste.

The following members have indicated that they own the game through their posts but their friend codes were not in their signatures. If you post your friend code here I will add you to the master list. Also, if you own the game, haven't posted yet and want on the list, just post your code and it shall be done.

I know I'm way late to the game, but I have about 5hrs into the game and quite a few friend tokens. I'll be adding everyone above by this weekend at the latest and send out some cards.

My overall impression thus far is that it keeps getting better for me. I really dig the controls and music. The feel of the game just feels right to me.

chess 09-23-07 09:02 PM

I've given up on finishing MP2. The fetch quest at the end just isn't keeping me interested.

Think I'll start MP3 tomorrow or Tuesday.

steebo777 09-25-07 10:14 AM

I sent a token to Eric D. Since WiiConnect24 is WiiSlow, as soon as it updates the list for everyone else I'll be sending out a token. I have a dozen to give out, so it'll be to about half the list above.

Spoiler:
I'm stuck at the dude who has that stupid thing eventually dangle between his legs and you have to roll up and zap him repeatedly to kill him. it's the dude who's attacking the ship. just the zip-lining makes me nauseas.

SmackDaddy 09-25-07 02:31 PM

Well finally got past Rundas!! I got tired of dying whenever I got within one or two attacks knocking that life bar all the way down.
Spoiler:
Of course I had no idea that shooting the ice spheres released health!! I was wondering where those random power ups were coming from, as soon as I figured that out it was a lot easier!

I finally earned another friend token, hopefully now that I am past that I can earn and dispense a few more.

Ocelot 09-25-07 03:18 PM

can someone tell me what the friend tokens are for again? i haven't got any... well, i just beat the first boss... where do i find the very first token?

chess 09-25-07 05:58 PM

Finally got started today. The controls are taking some getting used to...and I'm not entirely sure they are an improvement over the lockon system. So far, I'm not finding it more immersive...just more work. Now, instead of just locking on and shooting, I have to lock on...and aim...and shoot. This control scheme would be great on typical first person shooters, but Prime had pretty tight controls before.

Still, it has that indefinable quality that the first Prime had and the second one didn't...that vibe...and the atmosphere and music is amazing.

Groucho 09-25-07 07:08 PM

If you prefer, you can disable the "free look" and use the locking-on system from the previous games.

chess 09-25-07 07:30 PM

I'll keep plugging away...suspect I'll adjust. I was just expecting something intuitive like RE4, and this, so far, isn't coming easily for me. :(

I'm guessing it has something to do with hating traditional first person shooters. Prime was pretty much the only exception I ever had, because the system was a lot like Zelda...but now it's more like a "normal" FPS.

But I'm still REALLY digging the game.

Gromit 09-25-07 07:46 PM

I felt the same way about the controls. I've been playing it a bit more here and there and I'm getting somewhat used to it. I did disable the free look setting, but to be honest, I don't see that much of a difference in terms of game play.

One thing that did help was moving my sensor bar. My TV is over my fireplace. I don't have any issues with the angle as far as watching TV. I've never had any problems playing previous games (although I don't play Wii much). But aiming upwards might have been part of what was frustrating me. I moved the sensor bar off the mantle a bit lower on the fireplace. Now I can sit in my chair and "shoot from the hip". It's more comfortable at the very least.

chess 09-26-07 07:38 AM

Once I ran into my first real boss (the ice boss), I was forced to adapt, and now I've really come into my own with the controls...but I still try to turn with the nunchuck from time to time.

I like the free look...but on the advanced setting, it's a little bit disorienting for me. I'm thinking I may switch to the default sensitivity on my next session.

spainlinx0 09-26-07 08:11 AM

I used the setting before advanced. I felt like the screen swung around too much on advanced, but the setting before where it moved by moving the edge of the screen was a little easier for me. I might try advanced later.

Groucho 09-26-07 08:20 AM

I've been playing around with the advanced sensitivity. I like it a lot better for combat and for
Spoiler:
the spin attack
but for just moving around it feels a bit "slippery".

I have the same problem. It just seems like a lot of work keeping the reticule "centered" at all times. I think loosening it up a bit might be easier for me, but I won't know until I play that way for a few hours.

Yeah, I couldn't come up with the right word for it either. ;)

chess 09-26-07 05:18 PM

EUREKA! The default setting is much better...so much so that I just started the game over so I could replay the parts that I was distracted by my frustration.

It serves me right for listening to the IGN reviewers...taking advice from a couple of guys who are clearly used to First Person Shooters. On the default setting, my field of vision is much more stable. It's a bit more work to turn, but much less work just keeping the screen stable.

I can now safely say that this game is...just...wow. This and Zelda alone justify my Wii purchase.

Thanks to whoever sent me the token...I'll have to figure that part out later.
