I know exactly what you're talking about... how can SD and HD looks the same? Unless you got no HD to compare to or you gotta HD but it's in SD mode...

Fanboy 08-15-07 01:27 PM

I think that's really at the core of most of the "SD=HD" statements.

I would imagine that most people, being electronics-illiterate, go out to some big box store and say "Gimme one o' them HDTVs". They get it home, pay the Best Buy guy $60 to hook their pre-existing cable signal up to it and then call in everyone to come take a gander.

While the purchaser of the TV may notice some incredible improvement in picture, mainly due to having spent money to acquire said picture, most everyone else walks away seeing a blurry, stretched mess. Then they tell their friends, "I can't see any difference between HDTV and regular television."

My other pet theory is that they've gone to Best Buy/CC/WalMart/etc. and looked at the HD sets on display and walked out disappointed in the picture quality because they're running one Blu-Ray disc on a composite split to 30 TVs and the picture looks like ass.

That's been my experience in those stores anyway. I've yet to see a nice HD picture since none of my friends own HDTVs and my pockets are too flat.

KurrptSenate 08-15-07 01:31 PM

I think they are pretty sound theories actually

fujishig 08-15-07 02:07 PM

What I don't understand is this: if you buy a big flatscreen HDTV, often an SD signal will look significantly worse than it did on your old, much smaller, non HDTV.

Also, I don't understand how you can be an early adopter of a videogame system, pretty much pay a premium without the lure of AAA titles early on, and not understand at least the capabilities of the system. I guess people will buy things just to have them.

Ocelot 08-15-07 03:31 PM

It's no longer an early adopter of a video game system... For me, it's a video game system and MORE. If the PS3 only plays game, i probably end up buying a PS2 slim... It's all about one box can do MORE. Of course, this goes against many gamers (here or else where), consoles should be designed for games and leave at that... Well, that's not good enough for me, i like more for my bucks, even features i probably won't use, but it's good to know the product is designed with future in mind.

To stay on thread, yes, i agree with the above theory about SD=HD... There's no way in hell they are the same. So, with that in mind, it's not so inconceivable that some PS3 or X360 owners don't know the biggest thing about the consoles.

The only thing that been bugging me is component vs HDMI connection PQ comparison. In that case, it's fair to say they are the same. Also, 1080i vs 1080p, for none fast actions, i can't tell the difference... but personally, i think component looks better than HDMI for 1080i...

Are you getting more for your money, or more for more money.

The keyword is small... The SD signal is only good till the pictures are not blown up. It's like zooming, after the max optical zooming (good), you will get the digital zooming (bad).

Not so much, I think it has more to do with how badly HDTVs process (upscale) the SD signal. My new TV is not much bigger than my old TV as far as 4:3 area is concerned and SD material looks like shit on it (and has on all HDTVs I've played around with) compared to how beautiful it all looked on my old Trinitron.

Unlike most gamers, i get more for my money with the PS3... True, the PS3 is expensive, especially when it was $600. However, the much smaller HD Camcorder (smaller than my Canon Rebel) cost $900

Just filmed a friend's four years old b'day party. The pinata "smashing" in HD, priceless (no offense to the pinata here)... Hey, i can charge the couple for some bucks for having this footage in HD :)

Hey, when i first brought my 56" DLP, it was $3500 (including the TV stand, $300 value). That was three and half years ago... Guess what, it's up to 1080i (there was no 1080 back then!), thanks Samsung :)

We get it, you're richer than us.

None taken.

Hmm, no, compare to Toad and several others here, i'm average...

Sorry, I think I worded my post incorrectly. It's not that I don't understand why it looks worse blown up on a bigger screen with improper scaling, it's that I don't understand why people would buy such large TVs if they weren't going to get an HD signal.

Perhaps because they need a new tv? Maybe they moved into a larger house with larger rooms? Or possibly they are buying with a nod to the future?

Now I agree that once that purchse is made, all reasonable efforts shoudl be made to take as full advantage of the set as possible, but I don't fault those that don't, or more precisely, those who don't understand.

Again, getting more for less of my money and time.

that's not true... you might be richer than me in terms of vocabulary or other stuffs... money is really one thing, having it makes you happy (yes, i agree with that), but it's not the only thing (i think that's where people get confused).

I choose to spend my money on entertainment stuffs, because life is short... I don't drive BMWs (not that i don't want to), so to most people, i'm poor...

I'm just saying, when you buy stuffs, at least know what the stuffs can do. So, back to the topic, those people don't know what the PS3 or X360 can do, tsk tsk tsk, i don't know what to say... Like the OP said, "what are you, stupid?" Of course, i won't say that to a six years olds, they are excused...

That's pure Zen wisdom right there. It's going in my sig!

My brother has an HD cable box and a 56" 1080 set. His wife was watching The Closer on TNT on the SD channel. I mentioned that she should switch to TNT-HD to watch the HD version, but she says "this is good enough"

My GF does the exact same thing. Every TV in the house is now 1080p, with 3 of them hooked up to HD cable. Unless she happens to be in the HD section of the guide when she finds something she wants to watch, she will watch a SD channel, even if there is an HD counterpart because she says it's good enough to her. When we first got HD-DVD she would watch the SD side sometimes if she happened to put it with that side up, and never cared then either. That's why I keep saying no matter what the fanatics think (aka the format-fighting retards at AVS), HD/BluRay will never fully replace DVD, because most people just don't give a shit.

PopcornTreeCt 08-16-07 12:24 PM

3 PS3s, and 3 HD-DVD players and your girlfriend doesn't even notice? I'd dump her.
