Kind of Gamecube/wii compatibility newbie question: Do I need a Gamecube memory card to save my progress on Gamecube games I play on the Wii?

pinata242 09-23-07 04:32 PM

Yes you do. Once you go into "GC" mode in the Wii, none of the Wii functions work - including the Wiimote's "home" button to take you back to the menu. You've got to reset to get back.

bee_01 09-23-07 04:39 PM

That's wiidiculous.

GatorDeb 09-23-07 04:43 PM

I don't know why they couldn't save to the memory and/or the SD card like Wii Games. It had to be too technologically difficult.

Other than games, what can I buy with Wii points? Already got Opera.

This is one of my favorite games of all time, but I hope Sega doesn't screw this one up. It better come with it's own height sensor mat and set of maracas like the original Dreamcast version, I can't imagine how a Remote only version would play. The Dreamcast game, however, didn't come with a set of Maracas, that was an extra $80, so the game didn't end up selling very well.

Just got the new EGM yesterday with a multipage article on how the Wii is a dumping ground for bad games and how Nintendo's "seal" means pretty much nothing these days. Valid points, no doubt. Perhaps Nintendo has gone from being too hard to work with to being too easy to work with.

I could go either way. I'd like to see Nintendo do a better job of protecting the Wii's image, but I'm also a big fan of the free market. The cream will rise for those of us who are selective about what we play. What I worry about is uneducated consumers giving money to lazy developers and validating their strategy of dumping bad games on the Wii.

I worry about all of the ports a bit as well. I am completely fine with ports as long as they add a new control element that makes sense, like RE4 or Okami (crosses fingers), but some of the ports we've seen have just been shoehorned onto the wii with some gimmicky waggle controls.

EGM dumping on Nintendo? I thought I'd never see the day.

But they're right -- there are a lot of bad games being thrust upon the Wii. That's a side effect of being the leading console, and has been since the Atari 2600.

Yep, the original Nintendo and the Atari 2600 were both breeding grounds for some really shitty games that were made using all the exact same game designs. Go watch some of the angry videogame nerd videos.

jdpatri 09-25-07 09:56 AM

I calling it a dumping ground is a little extreme. Ultimately consumers will dictate what the market will bear. The console is still pretty young and programmers have to re-think how they create games to maximize the technology. I always expected the learning curve for the Wii to be a little steeper. Not that the programming language is more difficult than any other system -- it's the effective implementation of the Wiimote. More and more games will get it right. In the meantime, we just have to be patient and not throw down money for these half-assed ports and sideshow mini-game collections out of desperation for something to play. The DS should serve as a good timeline since that really took off after about two years. There's still plenty to look forward to on the Wii and I don't fault Nintendo for its progress. In their hope to bring more games to the Wii, they've had to give their "seal" to real crap just to keep the games coming while programmers work to play catch up on the system nobody really saw coming. I blame the developers for lacking the foresight to see the market potential of the system.

Hell, my parents just bought one and they haven't played a video game console since the Intellivision. I know this story has been replayed a few dozen times on this board, but I still never thought I'd be the one telling it.

That's one thing that bugged me on the recent 1up podcast. IGN gave a glowing preview for Endless Ocean(Wii) praising how good it looks. Then you have Shane "Sony Fanboy" Bettenhausen(EGM/1up) dismiss it inside of 5 seconds on the recent podcast, saying it looked like shit and was a garbage non-game. Then turnaround praise a similar game coming out for PS3. This was only one of a half dozen things during this weeks show where he came off as a shill for Sony.

They need to give him his own Sony podcast and get him the hell off 1up Yours. Without Luke to balance him and keep him in check, the show is almost unlistenable anymore.

Rant aside, EGM dismisses anything that isn't hardcore without a fair shake.

I agree, but we are informed gamers on this forum. The casual market buys up games based on the movie license and/or pretty packaging. So the Wii's biggest strength is also it's biggest weakness.

Not that every game for the casual market is bad, of course.

chess 09-25-07 10:02 AM

Hey, any Nintendo console that gives me a solid Metroid, Zelda, and Mario in the first 15 months is OK in my book...especially when there's a Smash Bros and a Mario Kart in the wings as well.

I just commented because it was the first negative press I've seen the Wii get...and it was valid. And other than RE4 (a port), I have yet to see a really good third party Wii title.

Agree on both points. I listed to the TGS podcast and got the same impression. It was the first 1up Yours I'd heard, and I just assumed it was because Nintendo didn't do TGS. It's good to know that it's always like that.

Otherwise, it was a pretty entertaining show.

And I'm just about finished with EGM...certainly wouldn't get it if it weren't free.

True, but that would happen with any console, just to a greater extent with something that has become a cultural phenomenon like the Wii. There just needs to be enough support for the games when they appear. I really do hope we can provide that to make solid third-party developers believe in the console. We just need the opportunity! :)

My interest in Zack & Wiki really isn't very high. The production values look great, but it just barely looks like a game.

Umbrella Chronicles looks like a good lightgun game, and I have some hope for Soul Calibur Legends...incidentally another game they needlessly ragged on in 1up Yours because it wasn't pretty enough.

Really, there's nothing in the pipeline that gets me terribly excited. This LOOKS really interesting though...from the folks who made Odin Sphere...sort of Viewtiful Joe meets Okami:

I don't know. It looks absolutely awesome but the gameplay looks oversimplified. I like simple 2D scrollers but the gameplay doesn't really look that inventive like what viewtiful joe was a few years ago.

How does it not look like a game? It's basically a point and click adventure game with tons of puzzles to solve. What do/did you think the gameplay was?

I have really high hopes for it... but I've high hopes for a few games now that have gotten poor reviews. Of course, I've noticed some games that got really poor critic reviews have scored much better with gamers. My Sims = 8.4 on Gamefly, 7.5 on Metacritic. Boogie = 7.9 on Gamefly, 5.9 on Metacritic.
