The only way I could imagine you are having problems is if you are using the RF adapter and can't figure out what channel to set your TV to. If that is the case, use composite instead, and send video on the NES to video on your TV, and audio on the NES to the red audio input on your TV. There really shouldn't be any troubles at all.

Find a SNES or Nintendo 64 (they're the same cable) composite or s-video cable. You can find them on eBay. S-video will give you a better picture.

Wow, didn't know there was a SNES s-video cable out there. I'm currently playing Earthbound through my projector on the wall, so it's probably about an 80+" screen. It's awesome!

Gamestop also has a universal S-Video cable that works with the Gamecube for $12.99. The Gamecube plug will work with the SNES and N64.

Just note that the redesigned SNES machines dropped s-video capability; you'll have to settle for composite unless you've got an older, original SNES. The plug is the same on both machines, but you'll get no image using s-video on the newer model.
