Red Ring of Death strikes GDC machine Phil Elliott 09:18 (BST) 19/02/2008 Demo Xbox 360 dies from the infamous three red lights One of Microsoft's demonstration Xbox 360 consoles has succumbed, rather publicly, to the infamous 'Red Ring of Death' in the company's XNA area at the Game Developers Conference. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/images/redring100.jpg The machine, videoed by BBC technology editor Darren Waters, has clearly developed problems the outcome of which will be familiar to a large number of owners of the console - three red lights surrounding the unit's power button. Writing on the BBC's tech blog dot.life Waters references the hardware failure problem which could cost Microsoft up to USD 1 billion to deal with. "Microsoft wants consumers to believe that its problems with the Xbox 360 console in terms of hardware failure are over. But wandering through the Game Developers Conference halls and it's clear that the problem persists," he says. "On Microsoft's own stand at the show one of the demo consoles has a rather familiar problem - the red ring of death. There's no way of knowing if this particular console was manufactured before or after Microsoft identified the problems with the machines. "But at the very least it's embarrassing for the company that its own stock of demo machines is still susceptible to the problem." Oh noes! Chris |

That's a bit different from my RRoD. I got all but the upper right quadrant flashing red. Just got back from the UPS drop-off location. I got my empty box yesterday afternoon. |

Even if they can't tell from an HDMI input, I doubt they'd have a unit that doesn't have a manufacture date, or one of the new power-source indicators to tell if it's a Falcon - or even if Falcons are susceptible to RRODs. They probably want to keep mum, so as to not get people riled up and ignore the non-Falcons on the market or whatever. |
It is probably similarly setup like kiosks where you can't see behind it.

That's the exact same one I got too. Went to hit up some COD4 and got the RRoD. Just sent away for the coffin online a few min. ago. Had mine for a while so I guess I thought I had just gotten lucky. |

I had a different problem with my 360- I couldn't get any wireless controllers to connect, leading me to believe the radio had died. Luckily I was within the 45-day exchange period so I didn't have to send it back to Microsoft.
Still, geez. I hadn't had the thing for two months. |

Judging by the experiences of others here, apparently mine is being delivered on foot.
...up hill, in the snow, both ways :( |
Just got my coffin yesterday. My 360 got the E-74 error.

Hoping someone will help as 36 pages is too much to search through. I just got my first RROD, and turned my console off, turned it back on and nothing. Then it happened again, but not everytime. Sometimes it just sits there with no lights at all. My questions are: if the repair center can't duplicate the RROD will I be billed? and What phone number or address do I need to contact? Thanks!

They got my console on the 22nd and I called today to get the status. The rep. said it can take up to 12 business days to fix the console once it has been received and told me to call again Monday to get a more updated status. I miss my 360!!

They received mine on the 20th and I see it was shipped back to me yesterday, the 26th. I assume it's been replaced since the serial number I registered is now different. FedEX took it from S. Texas yesterday morning to Ft. Worth this morning. I'm near Houston.

I tried the online site and it said my box is out of warranty! -eek- Maybe I will have better luck calling the number. |
I just got the RROD a few minutes ago. I was playing some M:UA online with a friend and turned it off for a few minutes. My wife turned it back on to try the KUF demo and *poof*, RROD.
I called XBOX and my coffin is on the way. Hopefully I can be as lucky as Pixy's friend, but I'm all the way in Florida. :( |

My console was also "Out of Warranty" but further down the page they list my specific RRoD (3 flashing red) which is still covered. This must be the 3 year warranty extended to all units. I didn't see that. Ordered my coffin this morning. I got the permanent rings last night. Earlier I got them, restarted and was able to play demos and arcade games no problem. |
So I got a question for anyone who has gone through this before. If you have submitted the repair order online do you have to still call that 1-800-4MYXBOX number? or do they just send you out and box and you only have to do it online. Just curious since I submitted my repair order online on Feb 21 and still have not received the coffin yet.

I did it entirely online. It's possible it took a business day or two for your coffin to ship, and you submitted it toward the end of the week. I got it after four business days. I'd wait until tomorrow then call if you didn't receive one. |
