Found this site recently, and it's a pretty good source if you're a "number cruncher" like me and like to see facts and figures about video game sales (hardware and software).

My favorite feature is their console sales graphs. You can pick up to three consoles (from any generation) and compare sales history. What's nice is you can align them at launch points for a better comparison.

For example, here's an interesting sales chart from this generation (worldwide sales, aligned launches):

Link to chart: http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons...g3=All&align=1

Is anybody else using this site?

Interesting numbers. The Wii is quickly approaching 10,000,000 units sold and should pass the 360 soon. Also the weekly sales of 200,000+ units is astounding.

There are claims that the numbers on that site are not accurate, but I find the information there to be well worth sorting through. It is nice to find that most of the games I like sell like crap.

I found that site a little while ago and I had fun plugging in the various systems to see what I could find.

Here's the OP's image without the launches aligned:

Shot at 2007-07-05

The numbers for the three systems according to this chart are as follows:

PS3: 3,612,279
Wii: 8,854,853
360: 10,132,763

The Wii is going to pass the Xbox360.

Wow, never thought I would be seeing that.

Technically none of them are accurate if you take in the fact that:

- Sony and MS used shipped numbers
- the largest retailer in America, Wal-Mart isn't included

Not only is it going to pass it, it's a full 30 weeks (7.5 months) ahead of the 360's pace. Arguably, Nintendo has nowhere to go but down... I hope they show us something awesome at E3 and can maintain this momentum.

the wii is cheap and affordable. It is also collecting dust in my house. its a good kids console.

i like that site. wal mart doesnt report to npd, but npd still uses statistical techniques to figure out what they have been selling. the only real downside is that all of those hunting and fishing games are probable severely under reported. lol

What caused the large jump in the 360 line? Was it a price cut?

Gears of War. Also the Holidays and sold-out competitors (PS3 & Wii).

During the holiday season last year, MS offered stores a $100 dollar rebates on the Xbox 360. Some stores passed this on to customers as a straight $100 rebate with purchase of Xbox 360. Other stores offered two free games with X360 purchase.

This rebate helped MS sell a lot of systems. It will be interesting to see if they offer it again this holiday shopping season.

Gears of War sold a lot of systems, it was the tech demo the system needed. Additionally, its the period that pack-in deals began.

I didn't think the $100 rebate was til December.

I can tell from the graph that despite the wii "shortage" there seemed to be a better supply of them in the launch window than the other consoles. It's more apparrent that the shortage is an unexpected demand issue, where demand was unexpected and unanticipated rather than a supply issue with the PS2 and 360, where they went into it with what everyone knew were not enough consoles.

I've said that all along. People have bitched about the "shortage" of Wiis and I just shake my head. They physically cannot make systems faster than people are buying them. That's not a bad thing!

What caused the PS3 jump? Of the 4,000,000 consoles they've sold, 25% went during the first week or so of April.

It's a bad thing for people that want one.

I don't believe PS2 went like gangbusters until realitively late in life.

EDIT: Well, I take that back - looks like a steady increase throughout. And yes, the 360 is matching it so far. For that matter, the PS3 is following the same path.

I don't think the 360 will have the legs though. MS won't stick with it that long. PS3 is a different story. I honestly don't know what's going to happen with that thing. The PS2 eventually hit $129, which was a big reason it kept going. I don't think Sony would ever sell the PS3 for less than $250, at least not for a long time.

It is interesting to see that the PS3 is on the same pace as the PS2.

I was going to compare the original Nintendo, to the GC and/or N64 with the wii. I couldn't find it, unless that is the NGP?

Should be interesting when Halo 3 comes out. I wonder how much of a spark this will make for the xbox 360.

Hope we revisit this thread then.

I really don't understand that. The PS2 had massive shortages for a long time after launch (like the Wii is now). The PS3 started piling up on store shelves just a few months after it launched. Is Sony really producing that many more PS3 consoles per month than they did with the PS2 per month?

NGP is Neo Geo Pocket I believe. I think the earliest console they have statistics for is the SNES. I assume that back in the NES days, they did not think the video game market would explode into the huge market it is today, so they didn't bother keeping statistics like this.

I wish that some obscure consoles like the Atari Jaguar and 3DO were on there. It would be interesting to see their sales graphs.

As an "older" gamer I can tell you that my friends picked on me for gaming, and that made me stop at 1 system. Now that it's more acceptable for guys my age to play games I don't mind buying any, or all the systems.
