ps2 finally croaked :(

Well I've had my PS2 for a good 6 years now. Every time I put a disk in all i get is the dreadful "disk read error". I usually remedy this with a few shots of canned air but that doesnt seem to do the trick anymore and after about 4 months of it sitting I really wanna get it fired up again.

I remember years back before I learned the canned air trick there was a link on some sony website where you could put it a request for repair, have it sent out , and they would fix it free of charge. Anyone remember or know anything about this anymore?

I thought my PS2 died a couple years ago, but I decided to break the seal, open it up and clean the laser lens directly. Now it works just fine.

Glad you fixed it!

Speaking of, mine is acting weird too. I've had it for about...well, I bought it when the first GTAIII came out so sometime around then.

Anyway, now when I fire it up it goes straight to the browser - even if the disc was already in there. I can select the disc from the browser and it plays fine, but it's never done that before. Is this the beginning of the end?

Not to invade this thread but speaking of PS2, mine stopped playing DTS tracks on DVD's. Any way to fix this?

EB does this all the time and they will simply send it off for refurbishment. I traded in two broken PS2s there and they knew it was broken when I traded it.

I don't think they always have it refurbed. I've seen them sell both refurb and used at differerent prices.

Right. If it works they sell it and if its broken they send it for refurb. They give you a warranty so even if you get a broken one by accident you can bring it back to exchange and they will send the broken one for refurb.

Anyone know how much the trade in value on a broken PS2 is? Mine recently broke and I tried opening it up and fixing it, but it did not help. I'm just afraid GameStop/EB wouldn't take it because of the broken seal after I opened it up...

I'm just looking to get any kind of money out of it, because it's of no use to me now.
