You did not like Andrea Rene. Even Andrea Rene's mom dislikes Andrea Rene. :)

I skipped a lot of shows just because she was on.

If Garnett isn't on iTunes yet I wonder how long I'll have to wait for it to hit the Windows phone marketplace.

Brutal.

I liked her. I'd take her every day of the week and twice on Sundays just to not hear Jeff talk about WoW or Hearthstone ever again.

Found the solo thing pretty damn dull.

Re: Video game podcasts

Yeah, he really needs at least a guest or two per episode or this show isn't going to last. I know it was only his first episode, but it seemed like he had a hard time staying on task or one subject and was just jumping around from bit to bit. At least on Weekend Confirmed, he could ask open ended questions and get a decent debate going and bounce stuff off other people. I do like hearing what he has to say, but he really needs to do it with someone else.

They should kick Drew off the Bombcast and bring Garnett on ;)

I don't think anyone can equal Garnett as far as hosting a gaming podcast, but I'm not sure a solo show is what I wanted out of it. He is much better, IMO, at leading and directing the conversation, but having some color commentator or otherwise interesting folks on to give some opinions. The roughest shows with him in the past were those when he drank too much and the show lost focus and just meandered, I wonder if he can keep the show on track and give interesting commentary going solo.

But if they kick Drew off, how will I learn about military technology and fitness events in San Francisco?

Garnett is the cream of the crop at hosting/moderating a show but he absolutely needs people to bounce off of.

However, I don't think it's going to change given all the smoke people are blowing up his ass about how great the solo show is.

Re: Video game podcasts

A solo show is a tough sell for me. It's especially a tough sell when it's a solo show that is so long. I'm not the person that cares about podcast lengths, but when it's a one man show, I prefer for those to be shorter.

But I'm going to give it a listen and see what the new format is. This might sound a little harsh, but I never was really interested in what Garnett thought about games, so much as I really appreciated his ability to steer discussions and to play devil's advocate to make said discussions more interesting. So I'm wondering if this show will be for me.

I tried DLC recently, and I think it's solid. I could do without the live callers (they didn't add much to the show I listened to), but I like what I heard from the one ep I listened to so far.

I legitimately like the show a lot. In my eyes, it's basically a distilled version of his prior shows, carving out my least favorite parts where they would lose focus. If I wanted an aloof panel where they talk about stupid shit that I don't care about, there are already shows like that. Bombcast is the most obvious example, and I only listen to it about every other week.

But I'd love to see Jeff and especially Spicer back on the show.

If you guys aren't already listening to it, I have a growing fondness for the Videogamer UK podcast. It has just a bit of joking around, but unlike the Bombcast, they keep the conversation relevant and focused. I recommend it. Fair warning: There's a Scottish dude on the show.

I thought that was a video show. Guess I'll have to give it a listen. Thanks.

DLC is okay. Nothing special.

Unrelated but since losing WC I decided to check out some other podcasts. Adam Savage's(Mythbusters) is pretty solid, IMO.

Agreed about DLC, and I was surprised because I like Jeff and Christian so much on Weekend Confirmed. I think Jeff needs Garnett as a host as much as Garnett needs Jeff as a sidekick/color commentator. There is just something intangible about the smooth transitions and general conversation guidance that Garnett provided to Jeff's sarcasm and humor. The other problem is the caller's, while I think it's great that Jeff tried to include the audience, 99% of callers are usually just make things awkward. I think part of the problem is that there is no screener, so he has no idea what a caller is ready to talk about. Sometimes he asks them a specific question, and they probably were waiting a half hour to talk about something completely different. Other times the caller has nothing to say.

Re: Video game podcasts

I'll check DLC out regardless.

The Doddcast is another gaming show I enjoy. If you listened to "the tailgate" on Weekend Confirmed, Doddcast is hosted by Rich Grisham who was the guy who called in his picks and was a sponsor of sorts.

Re: Video game podcasts

Was DLC the result from his Kickstarter that he had? Because if so, I want to know where the other $150k went ;)

I enjoy some aspects of DLC (so far I think they've had a different special guest ever week), but I think Jeff is a better guest than a host. And once they get to table top time, I hit delete.

I've started like 3 DLC episodes. Haven't finished one yet. Didn't even know there was a table top section.

Lucky for you, he just announced this episode that the show is up on Windows phone now. And already #1 on iTunes gaming podcast downloads. He also mentioned how much positive feedback he received on the first episode. So either we are way too critical or people heard a different episode

I loved Weekend Confirmed and Garnett on Games has been disappointing. I guess it was the discussion that appealed to me... because someone just reading me the news is dull.

DLC is decent but not as good as WC. I adore Jeff but having things via Skype isn't as smooth and the callers are just terrible.

Now that WC is gone, I'm really hungry for a catch all videogame podcast. The other shows that I flirt with are fine, but no show covers whatcha playing, news, talking points, and listener questions as broadly as WC did.

A couple from my rotation that fit what you're looking for

Videogamer UK Podcast: British gaming site. Almost always under an hour. Delves into game theory and marketing much like WC. Always right around an hour long, so it's tight.

Player One Podcast: Less focused and longer running, but not quite as annoying as the Bombcast that way. Panel is industry guys and former journalists.

CAGCast: You've probably listened to them before, and they do a pretty decent job hitting the points you listed above.

Obviously, you could also listen to Garnett on Games, which I think is actually quite good.

Exactly. It's not terrible because it is Garnett, but just reading the news and adding a little opinion to it is so boring.

I gave Garnett on Games a go, but it wasn't for me. A one man show is very dry, and doesn't really speak to my interests when it comes to videogame podcasts which is mainly a panel discussion of various topics.

I haven't tried any of the other shows you listed, so I'll give them a go and see if anything sticks. Outside of having a focus I'm looking for, a big draw of podcasts for me is how the panel gels together. Chemistry, and likeability, play such a huge role in the podcasts I really groove on. 'Tis why I still morn the loss of GFW Radio. I was listening to some old eps a while back, and it's funny how those shows still hold up since they spent a lot of time talking about video game theory.

Figured I'd bump this and see if anyone has been listening to anything new. It seems like Garnett quit Garnett on Games after a handful of episodes, does anyone know where he landed?

Patrick Klepek also left Giant Bomb yesterday, so no more GiantBomb appearances or Bombin' the A.M. He also hasn't said where he's going yet.
