but the gameplay sure as hell is!

Well I spent about 45mins playing this morning and once again it reminded of why I never finished the series. Between the notoriously shitty movement, limited range of vision due to the "new" camera angle from behind, and getting use to my new Wii controls...it was not fun. :( I'm hoping I'll get better with patience. I swear, between CAPCOM and the guys who make TENCHU I think there's a serious need for some "how to make characters move" classes.

I'm starting to think I should stick with my original plan and only play Cute Japanese games and console games on the Wii and get the "heavy hitters" on 360.

Give it a chance Robo. Maybe it just isn't your cup of tea anymore but I (along with many others) think it is totally awesome with the Wii controls. The first segment of the game (Village) I find is a little boring, and kinda hard for so early in the game. After a while though it really starts to suck you in, and when you get good with the Wii controls you'll be kicking everythings ass.

I played through it once on Gamecube and am almost finished beating it on Wii. I hardly ever play through a game more than once. I think I'm enjoying it more this time than my first time, and am already looking forward to unlocking some of the special weapons and playing through it again (New Game+).

Yeah I'm not going to give up.

Also, why are Headshots so weak? I'm guessing since aiming is "easier" they reduced the damage done right? I mean 1-4 direct shots to the head and a Villager keeps coming?

jediwicz 08-01-07 11:55 PM

You'll see why headshots are weak (with a pistol) soon enough. Keep playing.

I consider myself warned.

The ironic thing is that the movement and camera are MUCH improved over previous games, but they still are not that great overall. I really don't know why Capcom has such a problem with making good movement and camera schemes in RE because their DMC series really has no problem with it. Control in DMC has always been pretty fluid.

As for headshots, they are not weak at all. Headshots have never been 1 shot = 1 kill in any Resident Evil game (unless you use the magnum of course). Headshots do 1.5 times normal damage, so basically 2 headshots does the same damage as 3 body shots. Not a huge difference, but it can save a little ammo. The best thing about headshots (and also kneeshots) is that they temporarily stun the enemy. While the enemy is in its stun animation, you can run up and kick/suplex them.

I assume what jediwicz means when he says that headshots are weak is
Spoiler:
that headshots will eventually cause a parasite to pop out of the enemies head. Actually, that is a common misconception. It is entirely random when a parasite pops out. Headshots have nothing to do with it. You can kill enemies with a body shot and parasites can and will still pop out.
In short, headshots are NOT weak.

As somebody that gave up on the GC version in the village, I'm enjoying the Wii version. The controls are much improved, although I had to invert the analog aiming (I usually don't do that, but for some reason the combination of using the analog stick and the Wiimote to aim was throwing my brain off until changing the invert option). Getting a headshot off, kicking the zombie, and then slashing him on the ground is pretty easy now. Reloading is intuitive. The red crosshair and rumble whenever you aim at something that can be shot is a nice touch.

Hopefully STARS and the US govt might train their operatives how to strafe or move while shooting someday.

bee_01 08-02-07 06:03 AM

And yes, the Wii's graphics are woefully inadequate for a 60" HDTV. I mistook a cow for a zombie :(

spainlinx0 08-02-07 07:08 AM

Robo, make sure you practice the quick turnaround. You hold the Z trigger and press down on the stick. It spins you 180 almost instantly. It is a crucial move, especially since there is no strafing, and you move like a slug with a morphine drip.

I do think the sluggish controls are a cheap way to heighten the "scare" factor, but despite that I enjoyed the game. I would never say I enjoyed how slow he moves, but you begin to get accustomed to it.

Giantrobo 08-02-07 07:40 AM

Good tips.

Toad 08-02-07 08:12 AM

Spoiler:
I chickened out, bought the rocket launcher, took the right path, and now I'm in the castle with a slew of new weapons. It's great!

Toad 08-06-07 08:08 AM

I accidentally killed a merchant.
Spoiler:
He's the one locked behind a gate after you go through the sewers in the castle -- before the red-robed machine gun dude.
.

Am I screwed?

KurrptSenate 08-06-07 08:08 AM

they don't come back for a while, but they eventually come back

Groucho 08-06-07 08:11 AM

Hold down the Z-button to run.

Resident Evil: Outbreak File 2 actually introduced the ability to walk and shoot at the same time, but for some reason this has never been implemented in another RE game.

Toad 09-04-07 10:05 AM

I finally beat the game this weekend.

Spoiler:
I wish I knew that you got to keep all your weapons/inventory from the previous game. I sold a bunch of shit at the end to upgrade the magnum and buy a rocket launcher. Oh well.

How do you ever get 1,000,000 pesetas to buy the infinite launcher??

Enjoying playing the second time through!

Spoiler:
Assuming you already bought all the treasure maps the first go-around, they will remain active on your second play through. And all the treasures will be available again to find and sell to the merchants. Also, your money carries over to the next round, so whatever you had left you will start with. I managed to buy the rocket launcher before I even reached the castle.

Question:

I'm sloooowly making my way through RE4 but I wanted to know if RE 4 dings you for typewriter saves and using health sprays? figure if I ever finish this game I'll get a crap final score/grade and won't get some of the unlockable game content, but i don't care because I want to finally finish an RE game.

I think I may do this thanks to the Wii making the controls somewhat easier to use....

No dings for saves or using health.

I don't even think it has alternate endings. You do get a little screen that shows how many times you died, how many enemys you killed etc, but it doesn't have any bearing on anything as far as I can tell.

cartman 09-18-07 12:38 PM

RE4 has been taking quite a lot of my game time as of late. I just love the way it controls! I ended up playing through professional mode to get the ridiculously overpowered PRL 412, then through Ada's two modes (the battleship level of Separate Ways was so much fun!) to get the Chicago Typewriter (which, IMO, is the most fun weapon in the game). I really don't know that I'll ever get the handcannon, though. I played a bit of Mercenaries and it just wasn't holding my attention. If I could use the Chicago Typewriter in it, I'd certainly play it more .

Also, the easiest way to get 1,000,000 platas (pestas?) in one run through is to not upgrade your weapons much if at all. When I went through on professional, I was determined to have the million as soon as I finished to be able to buy the CT, and I managed to do it by only upgrading the TMP and the capacity levels of weapons when I had run out of ammo (a handy trick is to leave the weapon empty, then upgrade the capacity. When you do that, it fills the ammo up as well. Also, use the knife as much as possible.). It made the last fight really difficult as I had zero life left in the little life bar and only about 24 TMP round remaining, but when I started a new game, by selling off my explosives, unnecessary weapons, and leftover treasure, I had the million needed for the CT. Woo!

Ok, cool. I always thought dinging your score because you saved or used sprays was chickenshit in previous RE games.

Groucho 09-18-07 03:58 PM

What I hate is that the "time played" clock keeps ticking even when your paused. Drives me nuts, even though it doesn't ding you.

Toad 09-18-07 04:17 PM

So how do you get the Chicago Typewriter, beating the Ada thing? Aren't there 2 Ada games after you beat it?

taffer 09-18-07 04:37 PM

Yeah, the scoring system in the past games was lame. You could use healing herbs with no penalty but first aid sprays penalized you. Does that make any sense? Saving your game also penalizes you? Capcom expects you to play through the entire game in one sitting and without dying since there are no checkpoints? WTF?

I haven't played RE4 in a while, so my mind isn't too fresh on it, but I don't believe that it gives you a score at the end of the game. It just tells you your total play time, number of enemies killed, and your hit to miss ratio, but no score.

You get it by completing Assignment Ada. The original Cube version only has one Ada minigame: Assignment Ada. The PS2 port has that minigame as well as another minigame: Separate Ways. Separate Ways takes place simultaneously with the main game, but you play as Ada and get to see everything she did when she wasn't around Leon.

That bothers me when games do that. I want the 'time played' clock to tell me how long it took me to finish the game, not how long I left the system on while I was doing other things.

I need to dive back into this game. It's been messing with my OCD "gotta catch 'em all" playstyle, though. I'm used to finishing games with maxed-out ammo for every weapon. I'm not accustomed to being forced to switch weapons after running out of ammo.
