I finally finished. I almost wish that this was one of those games that kept track of time played. Almost. I spent way too much time playing this, but I am glad that I played it through. Now for some random thoughts. No real spoilers.
I hated the beggar women and the drunks. The drunks actually got me killed a couple of times by knocking me in the water (really should that be fatal?). Also I had a lot of issues with the video breaking up and slowing down. I usually don't notice this type of thing, but it was so frequent with this game that it was very frustrating.
For investigations, the easiest by far were the interrogations and eavesdropping. I had a lot of trouble with pickpocketing, and depending on the assignment, I found the informers tasks hard (especially if couldn't do it right away, and had to kill a ton of guards, which ends up drawing more guards).
Overall, good game, and at one point I thought that I might replay it, but because of the repetitiveness and the backlog of games that I have, I'll probably sell or trade this.

^ Me too. I HATED the drunks and beggars and they ruined so many informer assassination missions for me as well that I almost wanted to smash my TV...almost. I played the shit out of this and loved it...but I'm never going to collect all the flags and I doubt I'd do the missions again, so I'm going to try and trade it (over at RFD )

Okay, I finally pulled off the hidden blade counter. My best advice is to get into an open area with around 4-5 guys then use the dagger to do your first counter then switch to hidden blade. You should be surrounded by guys and as you see the first guy make his move to attack you you counter. I did it twice and got 2 different animations. Very, very cool. One guard started heaving and looked like he was gonna throw up and another flat out ran away.

I was messing around with the hidden blade last night too. Cool thing about it is that no matter who you're fighting, it's a one hit kill counter. So if you're going after the Templars (which usually counter all your stuff) it works great. All I did last night was find a Templar, choose the blade and wait for him to attack, at which point I made him a nice new asshole on his face.

The hidden blade counter is so awesome. There's gotta be at least 6 different animations with it. I pulled it off with a few Templars too. Last night I took out about 4 guys in a row with it and one of the guards that was left got on his knees and pleaded "Please don't kill me" I love the little things like that in this game.

I've been playing this game for about a week. My biggest pet peeve with Assassin's Creed is the information gathering stage is pointless and useless. Not only do you learn most of the stuff out of order, but it doesn't help in the slightest when it comes to killing the target.
Take the fat merchant information for instance:
1. Informant: He was going to have a party and it would be heavily guarded.
2. Interragation: There was going to be a feast.
3. Pickpocket: There's going to be lots of guards at the feast. Here's a map that you can't look at.
4. Evesdropping: Did you hear? Everyone is invited to the feast.
And so on...
The writing is ridiculously repetitive. None of the information helped me kill him any faster either. I just ran up after the cutscene, sliced the poor bastard up and hauled ass back to the contact.

One of the best things about the hidden blade counter is that it literally scares guards shitless. The funniest thing I've seen was when I had about 7 of them following me, I countered 3 of them and the other FOUR ran away.
Another hilarious moment today, on the 5th assassination in Acre:
That was awesome.

I don't think you can. Even after I turned off the HUD elements I would still get those every so often if I didn't do something I should have. So if you don't counter attack or block a throw it will tell you how to do it.

well it looks like it took me til the 3rd assassination to stop caring about doing all the steps in the game. time to plow through this to get through the story

The end of the story is actually pretty good. I agree though, by the 4th or 5th kill I really didn't care about saving all the citizens any more. I had more fun looking for flags.

It is odd how the big companies are writing this game off almost as a flop while the consumer driven and freelance based companies are giving the game 9's. For as much hype as this game got compared to what it delivered I would say this game is a pretty good 8 or so. It is kind of repetitive, but I am attracted to this game for some reason. It just draws me in.

Finally finished the game and I did the bit after the credits.
Can't say I'm impressed with the pacing of the story. It reminded me very much of the second POTC movie. You have to watch the same thing over and over just to get to an ending that only offers more questions.

For those that beat the game, here's a link to interesting info about the ending.
