Stuff from one game you wish was in every game

I've been thinking about this topic for awhile, mostly because I wanted to mention a couple of things from some games that I always thought were so cool they should be in every game.

The first is the ability to blow up locked doors. Deus Ex is the best example of this - if you didn't have a key or lockpick, no problem. The bazooka worked too, though it made a lot of noise. This was the perfect solution - yes you can do it any number of ways (just like you could in real life) but they all have their ups and downs.

Nothing is less satisfying than destroying a 50-foot-tall boss and getting stopped by a wooden door I could probably kick in in real life. I don't know if you have to get into completely destructible environments - I could see how a game could get really messed up if you had the ability to bring an entire building down anytime you wanted. But wooden doors shouldn't stop fully-armed space marines any longer.

The other thing I wanted to mention was the fact that you could use wood and fire in a logical way in Ocarina of Time - the first time I shot a wooden arrow through a candle to light a distant torch, I went "cooooooooooool". Few games have such logical usage of the tools they provide.

So anyone else see something in one game that should be in every game?

I'm sure the Old School PC Gamers will disagree, but I wish all 1st person type shooters like HALO and others would give the player the choice to switch between 1st and 3rd person views. I find I do better in 3rd person view and to me 1st person is annoying especially since you can't see what's around you without turning. Star Wars:Battlefont 1 and 2 allow this option. Some games like Lost Planet allow a temporary switch between the two views.

I wish the halo2 party/clan system was in every 360 game period.

The ability to save anytime anywhere.

I also agree that you should be able to blow up doors in FPS games. Deus Ex and Red Faction are the only ones that I am aware of that let you do this. It makes no sense if you have a BFG that disintegrates huge monsters but it can't disintegrate a freaking door.

Charm, endearment to characters without the emo. Like Skies of Arcadia, Grandia 1 and Beyond Good and Evil. Those types of games I could play during the summer and not feel bad about not being outside. Todays games and Tales of crapola I let 11 years old enjoy or WWF fans.

The ability to save anytime anywhere.
 This is tops on my list. Along w/ being able to skip cut scenes. Nothing worse than having to rewatch a cut scene (of a story that is usually only marginally interesting) because you died half way through a level and aren't allowed to save mid-level :mad2:

Skipping cut-scenes is a must. I can appreciate the designers wanting you to see their story but there is no excuse making the player watch the same scene multiple times, whether it be an untimely death or a second play through. It is inexcusable.

The ability to peek around corners ala R6: Vegas, MGS and GoW should be mandatory for any FPS. Granted, it's older and tech has improved considerably since its release, but it drove me slightly nuts to have to step into the open on COD2 to see what was around corners/walls/etc.

This was the only aspect/concept out of the Doom movie that I felt needed to be in the games. It's supposed to be the baddest gun ever made and a lousy wall stops it?

I'm hopelessly addicted to playing Gears. The hybrid 3rd person play/button to switch to 1st person aiming system makes an FPS enjoyable on a console for me for the first time. It allows spinning around faster but with a slower more stable aim if needed.

I don't need this for PC FPS games, but for console FPS games I think I need it. I never liked a console FPS game much before Gears (Halo 2 was OK).

I don't like the save anywhere/any time option. It makes games much too easy. You just save it every x few minutes and thus you never need to replay a level. Think of it this way, imagine if you could save whenever in a a level of Super Mario Brothers. How hard would it be?

The wooden door thing is funny, and it is cited in a few different places how absurd it is; especially in RPGs with over the top spells (can drop a meteor on someone but can't open a wooden door).

1. Being able to skip cut scenes. How freaking hard is it to program this? Why would they not want you to? This bothers me more than anything..

2. Save anywhere would be awesome.

Decker 04-23-07 03:11 PM

Save anywhere would be very nice. Also unlimited lives/continues. To not have that at this day & age is rediculous.

From playing R6:Vegas and GoW, I'm now spoiled and get very frustrated when I'm playing a FPS and can't hold a button to take cover. All FPS should have that feature now.

Quicksaves in every game would definately be a plus, as well as skipping cutscenes. However, I would also like the ability to rewatch any cutscene as well. Some games have some of the coolest cutscenes and you can only see it once without going through the whole game again, or creating a save right before that point.

I completely agree with you. I played Doom and Wolfenstein when they first came out on the computer and didn't have too much problem getting the hang of how to control it. On a console, however, it's a whole other issue for me. I just get way too confused and disoriented trying to play a FPS on a console. That's why I never got into the Halo thing, but do enjoy an occasional game of Star Wars: Battlefront. I bet there would be a lot more games that I would buy if more FPS games had the option to allow a third-person view.

I'd love the ability to save anywhere. New Super Mario is a little different due to the nature of the short saves, but there are plenty of games or RPG's where it becomes a chore to have to wait until you find a save point before turning off the game. That, or areas where you have to rewatch scenes over and over again after dying.

RichC2 04-23-07 03:33 PM

Journals. I like being able to jump into a game after a few months of not playing it and continue from where I was at. Many times I'll do that and be so confused with where I'm at I just say screw it and start over.

Joe Molotov 04-23-07 03:48 PM

Creator Commentary from Half-Life 2 Episode 1. I know there's a few other games that had it first, but I liked how it was implemented in that game.

Heh.. Not done before, but imagine a "recap" of the last time you played. That would be kinda neat. Sorta like "last time on Lost." -- "Last time you played Half-life... "

On the saving game topic, I wish more titles would use the save feature that was implemented in Kirby's Pinball Land on the original Game Boy. When you are finished with your game session, you can save state and restart your session from the exact place where you left off. You cannot restore that save after it was loaded. This means no multiple saves or work-arounds of that nature. This feature would work particularly well in arcade, high score-type games (like any pinball, with longer gaming sessions).

Pinball Land is the only game I know that uses this feature. I wish the arcade collections, particularly the two volumes of Capcom Classics, would have done this. Vol. 2 added save state, but that kind of nullifies going for a high score.

As for save states, I love them with PC shooters, but (good) developers usually put in autosave spots for the hardcore gamer. You are never forced to use the quicksave feature. It's a win-win situation.

I'd love to pay 500 Microsoft points so my characters could have a cute new hat.

I'd love to see proper 'ragdoll' physics in every game.

Rainbow Six Vegas had pretty good ones. I'd also love to see dead bodies stay on the ground.

Rogue Galaxy sort of does that. When you load a game, it has a short summary of what happened recently in the story while the game is loading.
