PSP Movie/Memory Stick question...
Hello All, I am getting back into my PSP and I was wondering...How many movies can a memory stick hold? I saw at my local Target that 1 Gig and 2 Gig memory sticks are coming way down in price and I was wondering how many movies can fit on these sticks..I also saw they sell software programs to transfer dvds to your PSP, do these work well?

Is it ok to discuss the software itself (as it is legit as any other store bought software)??
If the store bought program (the one that comes with a USB cable) operates like the similar freeware version the size of the file depends on the quality settings. So you would have to play with it to see what the lowest resolution/sound quality you can tolerate.

At high quality, I think it's around 2 hours per GB. I haven't messed around with the video too much though, so I'm not sure how much quality difference there is between the different bitrates. I'm waiting on the 4GB sticks to come down in price a little more (I think they sell for around $60 now), and I'll upgrade my 1GB card and try it some more.

You can find them for around $60 if you look around. There are usually deals on dealnews, but Amazon and Buy.com will already have them around $70 or so.
And from personal experience, it's possible to get it down to 200mb per hour. So about 100mb for a half hour show, 200mb for an hour, and 400mb for a movie. And it doesn't look bad. I just wouldn't recommend cutting it down that much if what you're watching is heavy on action.

Here is the program I have been using to encode movies to put onto the PSP, it's free too.

It has a lot of options for bit rates and resolutions. You can adjust the settings to suit your taste on video quality. You're on your own for DVD ripping.

yea, thats pretty reliable....
the "run in" i had with someone was a guy in the US. After I won the auction, i realized he only accepted money orders or cashier's checks, which immediately threw a flag in my head, considering you are screwed if he never sends the item.
I asked for an invoice before I sent anything out, but thankfully, he never responded.
He tried reporting me to ebay for non-payment, only to have his account banned after MANY people complained about paying for an item they've never received

If you are talking about movies on DVDs (I assumed you were), they are generally DVD-9s.
It isn't like the 360 uses some special DVD. A DVD-9 is just a double-layer DVD, used very commonly (almost exclusively these days) in DVD movies.
EDIT - And what does any of this have to do with the 360 anyhow?

Popcorn2 is also another pretty decent program if you're on a Mac.

Well I picked up a program at Target called Movies2Psp and I bought a 1Gig memory stick. I transferred A Knight's Tale to the memory stick and it took over 1/2 of the memory for this one movie. I know this movie is 132 minutes so it is fairly long. So this is all a 1G stick will hold? Can I assume a 4 Gig stick would hold maybe 8 movies? Not much at all....

Don't buy a memory stick on eBay under any circumstances unless the seller is close to you and you can beat them down if they sell you fake. I'd guess that over 80% of all the memory sticks on eBay are fake, with those sold from overseas sellers being a virtual lock to be fake. It's that bad.
This is a longshot by now, but Sony made new packaging for their memory stick brand and Best Buy was clearancing out what they had left in the old style. You might get lucky and find a store that has stock of the old style for cheap.

Just bought a 8gb for $30 something dollar from eBay (the 35% Live thing). I'm guessing it's a fake? Well, the seller is located in HK, China. I don't care, as long as it works for a year or two, i'm happy
Basically, i'm turing my PSP into a portable picture/video album, the 8gb stick will do nicely.
