Awesome, overlooked games that should be reconsidered...

I love that damn game. Hopefully it will gain more love once the Xbox Live Arcade version is made available.

I think when i sold the game my account had 3-5 of those rare skills. It did get irritating though only finding Japanese players online (who i couldn't really chat with) and everyone either hung orbs, cartwheel dodged, or just hid behind the stupid pole near the tree.

Silent Storm for the PC.
WW2 squad based game, much like how the Jagged Alliance series played. The destrucible enviornment in this game was simply fantastic.(I still remember once I had a sniper in a water tower, the AI tossed a nade at the base of the water tower, blew out it's support, and the water tower came crashing down on top of my sniper and killed him) Contained some RPGish elements as you got to choose how to improve your characters and what skills to focus on. Had a great variety of challenging missions that actually made you use tactics and strategy to defeat, instead of the too common run in with guns blazing approach seen in most games today.
So many fans of the Jagged Alliance games somehow missed this gem of a game. Easily one of my favorites in the past few years.

(One that came out as 'softer' games were noteably absent and geared toward the Gamecube crowd, if it wasn't GTA or Halo at the time, it was ignored.)

1UPs retronauts talked about Suikoden 2 recently, worth a read for anyone whos a fan of the classic 2D console rpgs:

Even though Suikoden 2 is pretty well regarded these days, it clearly didn't ship a lot of copies at the time, and now the ebay prices reflect that. For me it's definitely my favourite JRPG. Unfortunately, Suikoden 3, while a good game in it's own right, was a bit odd ball, and since then S4 and 5 haven't really impressed me.

I am going to check it out now. I am downloading the demo as I type this. I was looking around on the internet and saw that the game got good reviews, and there is another game in the Silent Storm universe called Hammer & Sickle. H&S got very bad reviews. Have you played it? Is it as bad as the reviews say?

R.A.D. (Robot Alchemic Drive) for PS2: I admittedly just really like mech games, but this one was a lot of fun... unfortunately, it's on a CD, which my PS2 stopped reading some time ago. I should fire it up on my PS3.
Firepro Wrestling series: we got a few of them for the GBA, but I fear we'll never get more because they won't get the WWE license, and they're not graphically impressive. The gameplay is incredibly deep, though.
Techromancer (Dreamcast): I still love this game... it's not the deepest 2D fighting game ever, but it pokes fun at nearly every Japanese sci-fi convention... you have analogs of Ultraman, Evangelion, Macross, Gundam, etc.
Military Madness/Nectaris (Turbographx): I'm glad it's out on the Wii now, but I remember before the Turbo came out here, we'd spend hours and hours playing this on my friend's imported PC Engine. It probably pales in comparison to stuff like Advance Wars, and the box art on the T-16 version was terrible, but it was a very entertaining game.
Herzog Zwei (Genesis): Not sure how well this one sold, but we never did get a sequel, and despite the Genesis having a great library, this was the game I played the most.
Phantasy Star series (Sega Master System, Genesis, GBA): Maybe this isn't underappreciated by fans, but it sure feels like Sega underappreciated the franchise (this and Shining Force). I admittedly am not a fan of PSO, so I don't consider it a worthy sequel, and PSU was supposed to bring it back to it's roots, but really failed. Unfortunate, I thought this could have become a Final Fantasy-like franchise for Sega. Still worth picking up: you can get 1, 2, and 3 on one GBA cart, or 2, 3, and 4 on the Genesis collection that's out for PS2/PSP.
Viewtiful Joe and Killer 7 (Gamecube, PS2): Two of Capcom's "gamecube exclusives" they had to release both for the PS2 as well... but while VJ got a few sequels and even a cartoon, it seemed like the vast majority of people missed out on it. Killer 7 was just quirky fun.

For me the DS and GBA have had some of my favorite overlooked titles.
DS:
Dragon Quest Rocket Slime (too quirky for its own good, but excellent)
Lunar Knights (why americans can't see the brilliance of this game I will never understand)
Tony Hawk's American Skateland (one of the few good American developed DS games)
Puzzle Quest (sadly this one looks to already be dismissed by retailers)
GBA:
Boktai 1&2 (Kojima makes great portable games, but few in America buy them)
Polarium Advance (A tremendous improvement over the DS version)
Astro Boy: Omega Factor (Treasure goodness)
Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis (one of the best RPGs to grace the GBA)

Hammer & Sickle was crazy hard, which is one reason it got such bad reviews I think. I wasn't even playing it at the hardest setting and I was constantly getting my ass handed to me. One of the very first missions, I can't even begin to count how many times I had to save/reload that thing...got to the point where I'd make even the slightest bit of progress and I'd save the game....something I hate doing in games. I read playing it on the easiest setting makes it bearable, but at the time I didn't want to have to repeat playing through parts I already completed to try it on easy.
It's been over a year since I've played H&S though...I think I may fire it up again and give it another go as I love this style of game. Guess I'll look and see if it's been patched at all.
If you liked Jagged Alliance, I'm positive you'll like Silent Storm. There's even an expansion to it called SS: Sentinels. Just be sure to not read any forums about the game...as plot spoilers are easy to stumble upon.

I picked up Psychonauts a few weeks ago based on somebody here talking it up. They said it was the best platformer of last gen.
Not hardly. It was decidedly mediocre between postively epic loading screens.
I did enjoy Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy quite a bit though and Beyond Good and Evil was excellent as well.

Ok seriously...
Not awesome, but certainly worth the look. I don't know how these sold, so I'm just throwing them out there.
Simpsons Hit and Run. I'm not a GTA fan really, but this is a really good GTA clone with some good Simpsons humor. I got stuck on one part and never continued playing, but I always liked driving/running around Springfield.
Metal Arms - I liked this quirky 3rd person shooter.

no, I find those statements completely different. No one wants to stop you from voicing your opinion, but as stated on the first page, argueing over whether something is considered "overlooked" is an exercise in futility, and totally defeats the purpose of this thread
