disk doctor

My copy of dead rising from BB is freezing on me now at the same spot.
I think its because of the scratches on it.
Anybody have any experience with disk doctor?
They have alot of different products.
do they work?
which should I get?

They definitely can help some discs, but they also ruin a % of the discs that you put in there. It actually grinds a layer of the disc off. When you're done, there are tons of tiny scratches on the disc.

If you have a Family Video nearby, they will usually run one through their machine for you for a small fee. I wouldn't do it unless it's a last resort move.

What Duster said. Here we have a game shop/comic book place that will resurface a disk for $3 I just had it done with my GOW disk and last night for the first time in a long time I had zero problems with my gears disk.

My 360 has started contacting my disks making a small circular scratches on them. step one for me is going to be finding some of those disk skin things until I can find the time to part with my 360 for a couple weeks for repair.

Yep. I have a couple of 50 piece spindles of the D-skins for kiddie DVDs and my games. I just consider it an extra $1 on the price of the game. They don't work in slot loading drives though, so it won't help with Wii or PS3 games.

I buy a game and put it on before the first time I put it in the drive. I'm very careful/anal about my stuff but I sell most of my games when I'm done so these also help with resale value.

Of course this solution doesn't really help with an already scratched disc, but a very good preventive method for the future.

Noob here. I'm assuming "D-skins" are a protective film with an adhesive backing that you put on CDs/DVDs? Are there any cons to using them other then it doesn't work in slot loading drives? Can it be replaced if it gets scratched?

Thanks
Goot

Nope. They are a thin piece of plastic but they snap to the edges of the disc therefore making the disc a millimeter or so thicker. Slot drives don't like it. They will go in but rarely eject all the way. Usually they will eject a quarter of the way and you have to pull it out.

Since they snap on, they snap off just as easy and are reusable on different discs if you wish. Since they are so cheap, if they get dirty or scratched a ton you can generally just toss it and put a new one on if it is a game you handle often.

I've never had any issues on my 360 or Xbox with them.

Bumping to see if D-Skins are still the most popular choice to protect dvds, cds, xb games. Are there any other viable alternatives out there? Looking for something to protect dvds and audio cds as the wife and kid love to put their prints on them and not put back into its case.

Thanks
