Forgot about that. I've used the CDX for years.

definitely a better setup that way

NHL 94 was the game I played most on my Sega CD. There was also that pack-in disc that had Columns, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and Shinobi.

Had an annoying discovery last night. I bought the Sega CD (model 1) and a Genesis (model 2) as a combo from the store. I already had a model 1 Genesis, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to have a second system just in case something happens to the other one. Anyway, they gave me an RF switch that's compatible with the Genesis 1, not the Genesis 2, so I had to order a Genesis 2 RF adapter last night. While I don't have any Sega CD games yet, I wanted to at least fire it up without a game to see if it shows the Sega CD splash screen, so that I know it's in working condition. Oh well.

If I remember correctly, the Model 1 Sega CD is only compatible with the Sega Genesis Model I. I didn't think the Sega Genesis Model II could sit and connect properly to the Sega CD Model I.

I have a model 1 genesis, next to a model 2 Sega CD

Sonic CD was easily worth the price of the console ... might be the best 2D platformer of all time.

Get Mickey Mania too... wonderful game with some jawdropping graphics for the time.

Jurassic Park also ate many hours of my childhood... and I don't know if I even finished it! It's like Myst: with Dinosaurs! ;)

I loved Sewer Shark... I don't see why there's so much hatred. It was a decent on-rails shooter with a decent difficulty level IIRC. And amazingly tongue-in-cheek funny.

Mortal Kombat is worth getting on the system just for the "MORTAL KOMBAAAAAAT!" music video on that disc.

I also have a QTE Mighty Morphin Power Rangers disc that I think might be the worst game of all time. Oh man. I think I paid $1 for that after the death of the system.

I did a lot of Googling on this topic, and while I couldn't find definitive proof, there are people who claimed to use the Genesis 2 with the Sega CD 1 without any problems. They were sold to me as a set, and there is nothing to physically prevent them from connecting. In fact they were connected when I purchased them. Some people claimed that some cable hackery is required to get the audio working right, but like I said, it was hard to get any definitive answers. In the worst case, if it doesn't work out in the end, I'll just return both the Genesis and the Sega CD to the store and use the money to buy something similar off of Ebay.

If you are an old school wrestling fan pick up WWF:Rage in the Cage.

It is exactly like the SNES/Genesis Raw/Royal Rumble games except it has a pretty cool Steel Cage match.

Sega CD is "Old School"? I bought mine right after it came out, and it was as high-tech as you could get!

Willy Beamish was my favorite game on it- it's funny as hell, was almost like playing a cartoon. It's SLOW as hell though, as each time a character says something the system spends a few seconds loading up the graphics and sound. I spent hours playing this game, but could never get past the very end.

Last time I tried to use mine it wouldn't load any discs, I'll have to take it apart to see if I can get it working again. Anyone know if they ever made an S-Video cable for the Genesis? I was late discovering the benefits of S-Video, but I was the only one back in the day who had their Genesis hooked up in stereo!

Sega CD came out about 15 years ago, so I'd consider it "old school". Keep in mind, my first console was an Atari 2600, but the definition of "old school" is constantly changing. :D

And  to Willy Beamish. My friend had the PC version back in the day, and we spent many an afternoon trying to play through that one. I remember it being pretty difficult - I don't think we ever finished it. It was pretty unique though.

Turns out the Sega CD unit I purchased wasn't working. I brought it back to the store and the guy is going to try and fix it. In the meantime, though, I found someone on craigslist selling a Genesis/Sega CD combo, and he accepted my offer of $15 for the whole thing. I picked it up over the weekend and it works great.

So far I've played a bit of Sonic CD, Sherlock Holmes (found it cheap at a thrift store), Panic!, and Popful Mail. I didn't really "get" Sherlock Holmes, and I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do. I tried reading the newspaper, but couldn't find anything relevant to the case. I'll have to read up on it and revisit it later. Sonic CD was fun, but I need to find time to sit down and play it for a solid couple of hours. Panic! is highly entertaining. As others have said, it's not exactly a game, but it has a really unique style and some great humor. Popful Mail just arrived yesterday, but I'm already seeing why it has gotten so much praise. I'm very impressed with the art and animation, and while I'm still very early in the game, the gameplay is enjoyable so far. The English voice work reminds me of all the poorly-dubbed anime I watched back in college. It has a certain charm to it, though. I'm looking forward to delving further into this one.

On another note, I made another nice thrift store find over the weeked: a Sega Master System with all the connections, two controllers, and 4 games, all for $12. The games that I got with it are After Burner, Thunder Blade, Global Defense, and Transbot. I did a little research on the best SMS games and decided to order Golvellius, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, and Zillion, and I'm watching an auction for Golden Axe Warrior that ends soon. I'm also watching other auctions for the 3D Glasses and the light gun, since they sounded pretty unique. Any other recommendations for SMS games or peripherals?

Phantasy Star is *the* SMS game to own.

Do you think it would be fun for someone who has never played it before (i.e., no nostalgia factor) and who isn't a huge fan of turn-based RPGs?

Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap = Best SMS Game Ever

Not under those conditions, no.

Definitely not.

Well, I was into turn-based RPGs a while back on the SNES (FFII, FFIII, Chrono Trigger), but I haven't been able to get into them since I finished FFVII. I've tried to get back into them recently but haven't had much luck. I guess if I can find a good deal on Phantasy Star, I'll pick it up anyway.

I did find an auction for a bunch of SMS games including Wonder Boy 3, so I'll be watching it.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

Another game that I enjoyed, though did not beat was Dark Wizard. I thought it was a fun Strategy RPG for when it was out. I would also heap on to the praise for Lunar 1 & 2 and Vay (I particularly remember one very emotional cut scene sequence from this game, though it is all I really recall besides LOOOONG boss battles) as well. I never did get a hold of a copy of Popful Mail. Also, man, if you can get a hold of a copy of Snatcher, you won't regret it. GREAT game!

Anyone remember Slam City w/ Scottie Pippen? It was a 4 disc game w/ full motion video. From what I remember, it was difficult as hell.

I remember, it was horrible (and hard). It is basically Dragon's Lair with Scottie Pippen. Never made any sense why I couldn't score either.

UncleGramps 02-16-07 12:16 PM

Sewer Shark arrived in the mail yesterday. Oh my god. Amazingly bad! Astoundingly awful! Unfathomably terrible! It was well worth 99 cents plus shipping just to witness what is perhaps the worst game ever made. I guess back in 1993 it was quite a thrill to shoot big rats while grainy full-motion video plays in a little window taking up roughly one third of the screen, but thankfully times have changed.

I also received Golvellius for the Master System yesterday, and it's got some interesting game design. The main overworld is obviously ripped off from the first Zelda game, but there are also side-scrolling areas and even sections that resemble a vertical shoot-em-up.

And finally, I decided to bite the bullet and get the last Sega system I didn't own yet - the Saturn. I got a decent deal on an auction for the system, 3 controllers, and 22 games. I remember renting the Saturn from Blockbuster back in the day shortly after it was released, but I haven't played it at all since then. The only games I played were Clockwork Knight and Panzer Dragoon, so most of the games will be completely new to me.
