Remember the N-Gage? Some of you may even have one in a dusty drawer, yearning for some love. Handheld website Pocket Gamers claims that Nokia held a two-day "top-secret workshop" in Santa Monica so that publishers and developers could have a look-see at the next-generation version of N-Gage.
The list of companies present include Square Enix, Capcom, Sega and Sony Online Entertainment, among others. However, how Pocket Gamers managed to obtain "top secret" information makes this very suspect, not to mention SOE's presence, who would likely only show up as reconnaissance for Sony's own handheld, the PSP. The article further claims that another two-day workshop is being planned in Madrid to show the new N-Gage to European companies and that Nokia will publicly unveil the new handheld at this year's Game Developer's Conference.
Noting that Nokia had an E3 2006 booth showing off some N-Gage titles, despite abysmal sales, it is plausible that the phone company is working on N-Gage 2.0 and is looking to garner some third-party interest; however, we don't want N-Gage fanboys (population: 3 or 4, maybe) to look at this story as definitive lore. We'll see if anything new comes our way leading up to GDC.
Okay... this is weird.Originally Posted by Joystiq

I actually have mine still. It was okay as a Symbian OS smart phone, but crappy for games other than snakes. Very poorly built phones though. My first one had the buttons die right away and my second one fell apart a few months after getting it. I definitely wouldn't buy another one.

Are they trying to bankrupt themselves?
Like anyone would buy this after:
1. The suckiness of the first one.
2. The awesomeness of the DS
3. The announcement of the iPhone.

That and they made such startling improvements in the redesign as not making you remove the battery just to switch games, I believe...Originally Posted by Josh Hinkle

The last I heard they are moving focus to game functionality on their entire line of handsets, rather than releasing a game specific handset. So that means no game cartridges for one thing. Plus, a more cross platform approach, like using the java me.
Any suggestion of an NGage 2 along the same lines as the original NGage is complete bs I'm sure.

Btw, the main problem with the QD was they got rid of the side talking feature from the original.

Wow and I had almost forgot about the whole side talking thing... its almost like they took every possible design "feature" that would cause the thing to fail...Originally Posted by Chris_D
