I had only read of one other case in the past few years. I had to dig to find it, but it was during the Boston Marathon in 2002.

In the long run, marathon may hurt (Boston Globe)

In doing some searches, there are quite a few articles about water intoxication during marathons.

This was posted in the Other forum and doesn't really belong here. Since other than the prize being a Wii, the story has nothing to do with video games.

think of it like this:

the body is in a perfect state of balance. the "particles" in your blood are roughly equal to the "particles" in your cells (including your brain). if the blood gets so diluted by the water, the relative number or "particles" in the blood is less than in the cells. the body wants to get back in balance. the "particles" cannot pass through the cell membrane out into the bloodstream to balance, but the water CAN pass through the cell membrane into the cell. water passes into the brain cells, they swell and burst, you die.

decker is saying pedialyte would be better, because it has some "particles" in it, which would dilute the blood to a lesser degree.

Not video game related other than the prize - discussed in Other.
