I think that the article mrpayroll posted has some problems. They say that the Wii only sold 604,000 during the holiday season, when it was predicted it would sell 1.2 million. Then they go on to say that it's sold 1.1 million thus far. Considering that most would consider the holiday season to include the time frame from launch to the end of the year, their numbers have to be off. Unless the Wii somehow sold 604,000 units from Nov. 19 - Dec. 31 and then another 496,000 from Jan. 1 - whatever date the last total tally is from, which seems more than a little implausible.

I think those numbers meant only December.

It would only make sense to me that they drop the PSP price by like $50 and maybe drop the MSRP on UMD titles by a dollar or two than to just not sell PSPs or UMDs at all. The two seem directly related to someone uneducated in business like myself, drop the pricetag on the PSP = more PSPs sold = more potential UMD movie buyers

Add to that dropping the price of UMD and maybe sell them to people who otherwise wouldn't buy them because of high cost as opposed to just not making them. They took the time to come out with the format so the initial cost to get it off the ground was already incurred. Why not at least try to stick it out. Bad decisions across the board on that handheld if you ask me.

Again I don't really know what the hell I'm talking about but it makes sense to me. Something tells me that the PS3 will be a whole different ballgame. Blu-Ray is a much bigger deal to Sony than UMD was so if it takes deep price cuts to move systems and get the hardware into homes then I think that's a decision they'll come to inevitably. Step 1 though is getting software on shelves that can't already be had for an already popular system.
Exactly. I think when UMD for non-game media failed to catch on Sony backed off of trying to push the PSP into a broader market position. I think they were hoping it would prove to be a competing product to both the Game Boy/DS and the iPod, and it didn't fare well against either. They have a lot more invested in the Playstation console brand, and a lot more invested in Blu-Ray, so I think a price cut to drive PS3 sales is not out of the question.

Similarly, the tepid market response to the Zune raises the stakes for the Xbox, because MS needs growth beyond what the PC software market can give them at this point. But the Xbox, unlike PS3 has software that drives hardware sales.

Maybe it's this way:

604,000 = Actual NA Sales
1,200,000 = Predicted NA Sales

1,100,000 = Actual WW Sales

Could be!

So I can see the CC as pretty much a required accessory for anyone wanting to take advantage of the VC--which is probably going to be most owners.

Not really, I have three downloads and just use the Wiimote to play them. Besides the CC is only $20 (much less then I expected them to charge) and you really only need one, maybe two; and I haven't picked one up yet so it really is a non factor.

That article is just ridiculous. I bases it's whole arguement over one guys comments that aren't even really wholly accurate. It is a total junk article.

This generation will be a very very interesting one to play out. I have always been a Nintendo fan but the success of both the DS and the Wii has surprised everyone. I think THE most telling thing is the fact that the Wii is STILL hard to find but the PS3's are everywhere. That tells me that demand for the PS3 was mainly due to the holidays and not necessarily due to consumer interest. That is actually quite shocking to me as I expected the PS3's to sell through for the next several months like the 360 did.

Guess it varies.

I couldn't stand the Wimote (not to mention it won't work with Genesis and SNES games) or the GC controller so it was a $20 necessity to me.

Not a big deal though, but I don't think most people that get into VC games will really want/need one.

I tried to play Street Fighter II w/ the GC controller, didn't take long for me to stumble upon a classic controller and pick it up. A couple days later I even came across and purchased a second.

The scales may have just shifted a little to HD-DVD's favor.

I don't know. Did porn really make that big of a difference in the VHS/Betamax war? The article says video rental stores were mainly for porn. Umm....don't think so. Only a very small section if they had it at all. I don't remember. What really made the difference in the VHS vs. Betamax war?

It says specifically "during December" for the first number quoted... the 600k. That wouldn't include the November launch numbers... I assume adding those totals brings it to the 1.1 mil.

I was shocked that there were about 10 60gb ps3's sitting on the floor in a BB on Route 1 in NJ. This isn't some out of the way Best Buy. This is a major shopping area. I saw no Wii's to speak of.

It was most definitely a factor in the VHS/Betamax war. For the first time it was the way to get "theater quality" porn at home without having to go to an adult theater. They came out of the woodwork for that stuff.

That said, since porn is so freely available now on the Internet, it's doubtful it will have much of an influence over the current format war.

I don't know. Adult DVD sales is a huge business still. The people buying those aren't going to be likely to buy a player that doesn't have porn available.

It probably won't be as big a factor as in the VHS/Betamax war, but it will still be a major factor.

Even moreso with HD-DVD already off to a rather large early edge.

I remember a sociology professor saying that every major leap in media technology has been driven by porn.

I don't know if I'm ready for HD porn though.

I think these companies grossly underestimated the price-elasticity of video game consoles, overestimating as well as the public's eagerness to upgrade their TVs to HD.

It would be amazing if the HD consoles never gained truly massive acceptance, and the PS2 continued to be the standard. I think this is the very first time such a thing has become even plausible in this industry. The Wii2 might very well end up becoming the winning combination for a while.
Doubtful. The people buying PS2s in 2006 for $129 are not a market game developers are looking to reach with new software. Anybody who held off buying one for this long is not going to pay full price for games, and, accordingly, there's very little new stuff being developed for old consoles because developers want to move on to the cutting edge and the gamers who buy new games have moved on to new consoles.

If there is a trend of people buying old consoles when they are cheap to play old games, then it might create an interesting revenue stream for these companies to tap into.

If I were at Microsoft or (especially) Nintendo, I would be looking to create dedicated online micropayment boxes, basically, an emulator, a hard drive and an ethernet port, to play exclusively the Live Arcade and Virtual console titles. I think Nintendo hopes to use Virtual Console to drive the Wii hardware, but the appeal of the Virtual Console will probably reach market segments that the Wii won't, especially if Nintendo could offer a device like that at a low price point.

HD is wreaking havoc on television news because it shows a lot more wrinkles and blemishes, and the heavy stage makeup is more obvious in HD. I think 1080p could successfully make sex unsexy, especially on a 42 inch+ screen.

That makes no sense. Is sex unsexy when you are having it yourself? I'm pretty sure real life has a much higher resolution than HD.

Real women aren't perfect, and I don't expect that from my porn. I prefer real to "glossy."

Unless you are a contortionist, you aren't getting the same view of ass-pimples during actual sex that you will on a typical porno.

Well I guess maybe the extreme closeups will be a little too detailed, but honestly I have never been a fan of that type of shot even in normal porn. I like a shot farther out where I get a better sense of the action, and a girl who can convince me she's not all show.

However I don't care if the girl does have an ass pimple. I don't need perfection, and stuff like that does not turn me off at all.

Actual *sex* with an imperfect girl right there with you? Awesome.

Staring at high definition close up shots (and even far away shots) of men and women, all over, even the faces, is far less awesome.

Doesn't even have to be close ups, I see no appeal with high def porn.

But I'm sure our great grandfathers said the same thing about the moving picture box.

Ok, enough porn talk...for a video game thread. Or is it?

Okay, for the umpteenth time, film has more resolution than HD and is shown on a bigger screen. I don't remember anyone complaining about porn on film. Same goes for porn on HD.

Maybe technically, but it depends on the camera and the film. I don't believe the typical porno shot on 20mm can provide HD level imagery.
