What screen resolution for an Xbox 360?

I just got an Xbox 360 and have a HDtv. What resolution should I use....720p or 1080i? When I switched both showed the screen. So I can set it to either.

Thanks!

Use whatever your TV's native resolution is. The closer your TV's resolution, the less scaling it has to do.

If you are not sure of your TV's native resolution, check the manual. You could post your TV model here and someone could help you if you are not sure.

imo, 720p > 1080i. That said, use whatever your TV is made for (most LCDs are more inline with 720p)

Its a 65" widescreen Toshiba rear projection. I believe the model is 65hdx. The set is around 3 years old. I remember waiting 2 months to get it. Since it had the HDMI hookup and was had the best "strech" of regular 4:3 shows into 16x9.

According to your manual, you should use 1080i.

On this same topic. Can someone give me a laymans explaination the difference between 760p and 1080i? I know it has to do with lines of resolution.

Layman's summary:
p stands for progressive scan, i for interlaced. Progressive means it "draws" every line in a row top to bottom like reading a book. Interlaced means it draws the lines top to bottom skipping every other line, then it goes back and fills those in.

A quick comparison is 1p = 2i so 1080i can be compared to 540p...hence 720p is usually thought of as superior to 1080i.

How about my TV, Sony KDS50A2000 50" SXRD Rear Projection 1080p HDTV ? Only does 1080p via HDMI so no 1080p via VGA with Xbox360 for me.

Thanks

I bet your TV's native resolution is 1080i or 1080p.
