I reckon the obvious choice is World of Warcraft. But since you must be a shooter fan like myself, the big multiplayer titles I know of are from the Battlefield series (particularly 2 and 2142 now) and Half-Life's Counterstrike. Of those, I only play BF 2, but I still play the older BF1942. You can get 1942 collections pretty cheap these days. Although many may not agree, the BF games are really fun!
HL also has a few cool mods you can play through Steam (my fav being The Specialist, which is a Matrix-influenced game with a robust selection of weapons, kung fu and slo-mo. It's very cool). I don't think Doom 3 or Quake 4 have as big a following online as their previous installments.

Too hard a question to answer. There are a ton of PC multiplayer games and they all have different strengths and weaknesses. But if you like Halo, I recommend Unreal Tournament 2004. (UT2007 is coming out this month, so you can get the earlier game on the cheap).

The community is small nowadays, probably less than 150 players on half a dozen servers (more if you count Europe), but Tribes 2 continues to be my favorite. I also play a lot of UT and UT2K4. I tried the BF 2142 demo and it was verrrry nice.

I agree with you about the moronic shoot everything that moves players. But, I play mostly on the disposable heroes TDM/CTF servers. Rambo clowns don't last too long there. We do a lot of covering fire and actually employ some team tactics. It's kind of cool to watch sometimes. Especially if the other team is just a bunch of jumping shooting morons!!

Another vote for Counter-Strike: Source and Battlefield 2 (or 2412)!

Plus they messed up the mg42 so I couldn't use it like I used to.
Used to play the earlier versions non-stop.
