The reason is no one cares about DC based characters games no matter how iconic the characters may be.
1. They barely make DC hero games.
2. When they do make DC hero games they always suck. It's like they're destined to bomb and get dismal reviews even before the first lines of code are written.
I would swear that game reviewers have a, "this new insert DC chracter game name here _______ is bad", review saved on their computers.

Anyway, I realize certain DC games can have a small number of fans who think a particular game is "just ok". I guess what I'm really saying is that they'll NEVERFUCKINEVER make a DC based game with the mass appeal and positive reviews of an X-men Legends I & II or a Marvel Alliance game and it's a damn shame.....

I'd love to someday see a great Superman game, but the problem is that the developers are very limited in what they can do with Superman. The guy is damn near invincible, so how do you create enemies that are challenging? I give EA credit with what they tried in this game - instead of Supes having a lifebar, it's the CITY that has one. That makes it a little more interesting, but still limits what you can do. If you're battling an enemy and end up throwing a stray car or hitting a pedestrian then you get penalized for it. There needs to be a better system in place, but you got me as to what it could be.
The other problem is Supes himself - the guy is the symbol of all that is good. He's supposed to be pure and would never hurt or kill anyone. You then take the character and put him into a sandbox environment that is just made for mayhem, but you can't do any such thing because of the constraints of character. All you can do is fly around and save kittens, and I can imagine that would get boring after a while.
There are a lot of obstacles that a developer needs to overcome if they're to put out a quality Superman game. They definitely need to take some time and think it out and not rush the game as this one apparently was.

Fine, but Superman isn't the only character that could be great in a game. Again, who's in charge of deciding when to license DC games? How come this/these Moron(s) doesn't/don't go to the same folks who created Marvel Alliance and demand the same attention to graphics, gameplay and other things that made that game great? Yes, I said great. Hell, the ASGARD level alone with its land floating over space and strange lighting makes that game worth seeing.
Also, look at how many characters are near invincible in Marvel Alliance. Characters like Thor, Thing, Ms. Marvel, and Others.

Best Buy is offering $10 off Superman Returns the game when you buy any of the many Superman DVDs on Tuesday. Despite the awful reviews, I'm still thinking of picking it up.

Has anyone seen the TV commercial for the Superman Returns game? The quotes from the terrible reviews it's been getting are very selective:
IGN says Superman Returns is "Pure Fun"!
TeamXbox says Superman Returns is "A Gigantic World"!

Bummer, I was hoping for a good open world Superman game... The best Superman related games I've played so far are Death and Return of Superman (SNES) and Justice League Heroes.

We had an extended discount at work, and a used copy of the game, so I bought it. So far, I'm enjoying it. It's what I expected it to be: an exact copy of Spider-Man 2. And it is. But the joy of flying around Metropolis has still not worn off.

Anyone think that it takes Superman WAAAAAAAY too long to fly places. Seems like the amount of time it takes Superman to fly across the CITY at super speed creating sonic booms the whole way should get him across the COUNTRY. He's supposed to be able to go nearly the speed of light.

Yeah, it does take a little long to get to the Industrial Islands, but the game would be no fun if you could go anywhere on the map at any time. It's not like you see Superman in the movies zipping everywhere at the speed of light all the time.

Despite all the poor reviews, I did enjoy the demo and plan to pick up the game used when the price is much cheaper. I do play the demo and just fly around the city, which so far hasn't gotten old.

i had wished this came out on GC, but alas it wasn't to be. i'm glad it got such bad reviews so as not to make me feel so bad that it didn't come.
perhaps a good Superman game would be an origin game. starting out as a young Clark Kent (ala "Smallville") and have him slowly developing and learning about his powers. fight "wall of weird" villians and slowly progress up to adult Superman and then ship him off to the city. still, give him limited powers (Clark still hasn't found flight in SV (with tough bosses that have to be beaten with ingenuity rather than super force and such) then he works up till he is Super-Superman and can fight the ultimate baddies throughout Metropolis. (many great games like Metroid and Zelda you have to progress to get more skills, weapons, etc...)
in a multi-part final boss fight (don't know who that would be, maybe Brainiac) the boss fleas to the remnants of Krypton (and appease all the ones who wanted to see these so called deleted scenes from Singer's "Returns"), that happens to now lie near a red sun and perhaps you battle some suped up Kryptonians throughout the lower depths (lava caverns of Krypton perhaps, maybe a Phantom Zone stage and you have to use puzzles and such to escape and get back to Krypton) before battling on the surface of this surreal, desolate, once glorious world with said final boss.
i dunno, that seems like an idea i can get behind.
