So is the memory card adapter even out yet?

I don't think that one is true, I think the SNES was technically more powerful. Sega just touted that blast processing crap to make it sound more powerful (just like Nintendo did with Mode 7), but the actual tech specs favored the SNES.

I remember Mortal Kombat 2 on the SNES looked pretty close to the arcade, compared to the genesis version which looked like crap.

PixyJunket 11-22-06 01:09 PM

Genesis had a slightly faster CPU clock (which they stated as EXXXTREME BLAST PROCESSING!) but the SNES had specialty chips (one for graphics and one for sound) that rendered that fact inconsequential. Treasure was the only company to actually push the Genesis to make games that came close to the top-tier SNES stuff.

fujishig 11-22-06 02:59 PM

Also, I was a little surprised that one of the only "Live Arcade"-type games they have up now is pretty much a knock off of Geometry Wars. I do like that they use actual dollars instead of obscuring prices with the point system...

I think the SNES could also display more simultaneous colors, hence the games were less pixelated. Also the sound was clearly better on the SNES. Final Fantasy III, Actraiser, are prime examples of awesome orchestrated sampling :).

Chris_D 11-22-06 09:20 PM

The Genesis CPU was actually almost twice as fast (8mhz to 4mhz) which was pretty significant in certain cases (like Sonic). Of course the genesis sound chip could never keep up with the awesome ochestral ability of the snes. The snes also had some nifty 3d effects although this was less significant in practice than the sound. But games like pilot wings and starfox (particularly star fox had an additional chip) couldn't be done on the gen. From the other point of view, there were some early hiccups for the snes, with Final Fight being single player only, as capcom couldn't get enough out of the snes at the time to make it 2 player, making this a poor option to the Streets of Rage series.

Oh yeah, as said above, the snes could display about 8 times the number of different colours simultaneously which could lead to richer looking graphics.

But in all I do agree with the others. The PS3 and 360 are very comparable and there is not going to be much difference in graphics.

Only the most picky of videophiles, or the most hardcore of graphic whores will buy a PS3 over a 360 due to graphics. The battle will be determined by who has the most system seller games in the long run.

Sorry to be late answering this, but I finally scored a PS3 yesterday, so I haven't been on the internet much. As I mentioned in my earlier post, Epic is making Unreal Tournament 2007 for the PS3. Needless to say, it also uses the Unreal3 engine. So we'll see then which console handles the engine better.

It's a better comparison to use games out on both systems (CoD3, Marvel: UA) etc. Has anyone done a real comparison? I'd love to see the differences, if any.

Comparing UT to GoW, eventhough they're using the same engine, doesn't make much sense because they are different games.

The boxer models look *slightly* more detailed than the 360 version, but :wtf: is up with the spectators? That is fricking NES quality there.

the PS3 screenshots i saw show pretty detailed textures, but crappy realistic movement. the background trick of poor quality spectators for better quality primary graphics is pretty old.

I forgot the game I saw, but the textures looked nice but when the whole character moved it looked pretty bad as a whole and not realistic movement.

I just saw an interview with the guy that was shot while in line for a PS3. He seems like a real asshole. He said that while he was on the ground bleeding, he was telling the WalMart employees to take his money out of his pocket so his friends could get the PS3. They were all flipping them on Ebay, of course. And Walmart gave him a free one.

Can anyone help me set up my wireless connection?

I know the WEP passcode but when converting it to hexadecimal it only works for my Wii and not for my PS3. What's wrong?

Yes, I bought one today at Target. I think it was $15. Haven't seen them anywhere else though.

You can use any USB-based one, IIRC.

I'm very excited to see Neo-Geo games come to the PS3: http://www.ps3land.com/article-1020.php. I had not heard of this before yesterday.

Save Ferris 11-26-06 03:43 PM

Boy this thread is simply buzzing with all the excited new PS3 owners. Or maybe they're too busy playing to come and post some first impressions! ;)

seriously, do more than 4 members here have the console? How does it play? Is the controller that bad (light)? Can we get more than 1 opinion on the OS? Im beginning to think that 90% of the people who 'own' the console still have it in the box ready for shipping.

Tiger WOods - Same as the 360 - perhap some draw distance improvements but that's all. It was a good game on the 360, and I had just as much fun with it here. No Sixaxis improvments made.

Madden - played it breifly. It's Madden. No sixaxis improvments noticed, but I only played 1 game.

NFS:Carbon - played a little career mode, and a bunch of multiplayer - quite fun and looks quite sharp. I'd assume the same thing on the 360. No sixaxis improvements noticed.

The controller does feel quite light, but it also feels solid. I tried twisting and trying to make it stand up to the wimpy weight, but it felt good.

The system is hella quiet compared to the 360, but still noticable. ANd it blows a shitload of hot air, yet is cool to touch.

Perhaps you missed this post? Also, we DO have 1 PS3 review up thus far...

Oh and as I played more I did find what the controller improvements are in the games, and they are near useless :(

Did Flay get one? I'd be awesome to get a comparo of a couple of cross-platform games (Marvel UA, CoD 3, Madden) and pick a winner or grade each one.

Save Ferris 11-26-06 05:25 PM

any update on the heat issue--does it handle long playing sessions well? No worries?

Also, the battery in the controller is not replacable right?

Fandango 11-26-06 06:31 PM

The battery in the controller looks like it could be easily replaced, it is accessible after you unscrew the cover. The only question is where to get replacement batteries.

I did.

We've got a review for Tiger, MAdden is coming as is Need for Speed carbon. So what, you don't trust my opinions? :(

Harry Lime 11-26-06 10:29 PM

I thought it was amazing that my friend and I got a ps3 out of the 400,000 promised but now with all the talk of there only being half that amount im shocked I got one. But overall im extremely happy with it and have had zero problems with it so far but I have yet to check out every last feature. From the launch games I got Resistance and Nba 2k7. Im almost done with Resistance but Im lovin the multiplayer (Unfortunately there are only maybe 300 people total playing on different servers.) 2K7 is simply amazing looking and fun as hell. I played every Nba 2k game since 2k2 on the ps2 so its nice to have gotten this as a launch title to hold me off till Fight night and Motorstorm in the near future

If you guys have any questions about the ps3 just ask away or if you want some pic of specific areas of it ill be glad to take em for you.

Good luck to everyone looking to get one.

That's the saddest thing I've ever heard. Shouldn't pretty much every PS3 owner be playing this game online right now?

I think its because so many people got the system to ebay it but yea its not a lot of people at all right now. There are Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch games a plenty with a couple having 40 players but after playing one game of meltdown with 40 people last sunday I was hooked. Deathmatch is fun but it is nothing compared to Meltdown and Breach. Too bad there is only one server hosting breach and that only has 6 people on it. No meltdown though

But as more and more people get PS3s I think it will increase by a lot.

P.S. Nba 2k7 is far worse the most people Iv seen online is 6 and none of them were there to play.
