New Gamer thinking of getting a console. 360 or Wii?
I have not owned or played a game system since Super Nintendo.
I am considering into the 21st century gaming scene.
I have ruled out PS3 because itis too expensive (and impossible to get).
The money is not such a huge factor in my choice.
360 pros:I like that the 360 is in HD and the graphics are amazing.
I also like the fact that it has been out for a while and there are more games, and cheaper games.
My brother owns one and has a fews games I could Borrow, so I would not need to buy games right away.
My xbox con is that I am afraid of the overheating issue and that maybe I will not be into the gaming and I droped $360 (10% off at overstock).
I like the Wii but it is not HD, but the graphics are still cool.
I like the new style of play they are introducing, and I like that you can download old school games.
Based on What I have said, what do you think?
Oh, and yes I have an HDTV.

Based solely on what you said your gaming history was, I'd go with the Wii. It'll offer a lot of unique games that you won't find on any other console. Plus, it'll have the Virtual Console where you can download old games from the NES, SNES, Turbografx, Genesis, and N64.

As much as I like the Wii if I was only going to get 1 system over the next couple of years then it would probrobly get the 360. That might change if Nintendo ever gets the online play on their games right.

It all depends on what games you are interested in and why you stopped gaming in the first place.
Do you like the shooters, sports games, and action games you see on the 360? Are graphics a big deal to you? Try out your brothers games, see what you think. If you enjoy those games go for a 360 and the 360 is backwards compatible with some XBOX games.
Why did you stop after the SNES? Was it the complexity of the 3d playstation/N64 era games as opposed to the more pick and play SNES generation games? Did you like the Nintendo franchises like Zelda and Mario?
Does the new Wii motion sensing conroller look intriguing to you or gimmicky? The Wii will have the more casual friendly games supposedly, pick up and play type games, and the new controller brings up lots of new possibilities for gameplay. Plus you could use the virtual console to catch up on N64 games you missed and the Wii will play all the gamecube games from last generation.
I will be getting both, but it is hard to make a reccomendation without knowing what kind of games you like.

I think Aat the time I stopped gaming it was because I may have felt I was too old to play video games.(I was like 19, but back then, games werent as popular for adults as they are now).
I liked Zelda and Mario games. But My favorites are Shooters.
Graphics are important, but it is not like nintendos graphics are bad.
I do like HD and Widescreen though as I have an HDTV.
Also wonder how easy a wii will be to get. Also a little nervouse the new game play could bomb...although the revies say otherwise.

I agree too. There are 3 potentially excellent shooters coming out this month alone for the 360: Gears of War, Rainbow Six Vegas, and F.E.A.R. and early next year will see the release of even more 360 exclusive shooters: Lost Planet, Bioshock, and Alan Wake. The Wii will have some good shooters like Red Steel, but the 360 will be the console of choice for most "Americanized" action/shooter games.
Although since the topic creator said that money was not a factor, why not just get both consoles? The new Zelda game looks totally badass and you definitely won't find it on the 360.

Even though I don't yet own a 360 (may change before the end of the week) I'll echo what msdmoney said it all revolves around what type of games you like. For the360 it's bread & butter is action/shooters. With Sony (PS2 & 3) it's sports based and with Nintendo it's...well Mario base style games. Granted each is trying to expand the base they're still viewed that way.
One thing in the 360's favor is game /dev's support. They clearly have the jump and the game catalog will be twice that of the PS3 and Wii combined. There may be so-caled "heat" issues but you at least know where the 360 stands vs the other two. No one has a crystal ball and can say it'll be clear sailing or problems galore. One thing for a fact is it'll be like going from the "flintstone mobile" to a "vette" no matter which way you go. Good luck.

Why not get a PS2?
They're only $129. There are hundreds (thousands?) of games available for it of every kind. It has most of the big name franchises available for it like Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Silent Hill, Guitar Hero, Grand Theft Auto, etc. And most of the games are available for about twenty dollars (at least after they've been out a while or are re-released as Greatest Hits).
It would seem to be a good option if you're new to gaming and don't want to put out a big investment into a system. For the same price you'd pay for a Wii, you could get a PS2 and six games.
Also, I believe that most of the kinks have been worked out of the system, so those little slim-line consoles should be mostly error-free and durable.

I'm a Nintendo fan first and I'm getting the Wii on day one, but I'd still recommend the 360 for you. If not only for your options. You can borrow from your brother. Bigger library as well as many titles that are cheaper than retail. Not to mention you can game online with your brother with a proven Live system.
Plus the heavy is shooters which you seem to like, which I don't get. How does one favor shooters if you haven't played games since the SNES era?
Taffer posts a good list, and yet left Halo 3 off there.

I have played demos of Doom, Duke Nukem and a Starwars FPS when I first got my pc in 1995/96. I liked them but Never really got the full versions, and used arrow keys on my keyboard.
I'm leaning towards the 360. It is just the Wii has got me so curious.
Also I am not sure If I could get a Wii at launch.
I am not going to get both. Money is not an issue for one or the other, but it would be for both.
I have concidered a PS2 of regualr Xbox, but If I am going to go in to this, I'd rather start with the latest technology.
I guess If I do not get into it, I can recoup most of my investment on ebay or something.

I've played Red Steel briefly. It was one of the only Wii games that left me unimpressed. The shooting system designed to take advantage of the controls was a terrible adaptation and made aiming incredibly tough.

But Red Steel was one of the games on my list. I may have to reconsider that now.

I would get a Wii or a PS2. There's no console with a better line-up of games right now than the PS2, imo. With the Wii you get Zelda, CoD3, Red Steel and with the VC you can get access to a bunch of old-school games as well.
