Yeah but Halo's vehicle was in a completly different leauge than those other 2. Sure it wasnt the first to do it, it was just the first to do it really really well. The warthog in Halo was the funnest part of the game and I have yet to play a FPS that matched the quality of vehicles that game had.

This is a superb game. This game is dare I say it, better than Halo. Haven't played any multiplayer but would like to.

Anyone up for it.

Supermallet 11-13-06 01:38 AM

There's a whole group of us that have been doing multiplayer lately. Look me up or pizzamousechips.

Giantrobo 11-13-06 06:18 AM

I. Love. This. Game.

I guess I never thought about this, until I saw a review mention it, but this is as much a Survival Horror game as it is a sci fi game. Obviously it's a mix of Sci fi and Horror with a good balance of both.

I just killed the
Spoiler:
Berserker and man did she remind me of Nemesis from Resident Evil. I got the same “oh shit!” feeling of urgency and man was that fun!

Did anyone do anything interesting on “emergence day”? I tried to get in on some matches but I ended up getting off and going to bed since I had been up all day.

Same here. I just didn't to play any matches. Actually, some dvdtalkers were playing but I couldn't wait for the match to end to join.

Anyway, I'm guessing nothing to interesting happened.

Maxflier 11-13-06 08:57 AM

Are the free theme & gamerpics still available? I didn't bother partaking in the Emergence Day event since I suck at this game :( .

Trevor 11-13-06 10:35 AM

I've been playing GOW a lot over the past few days, and must admit that I agree with all the rave reviews.

I never thought I'd say this, but we may have a Halo-killer here.

It is absolutely stunning to look at, the controls rock, and the story is at least as immersive as Halo and Half-Life.

Just finished Act 2 on hardcore, and will probably be up all night (again) plodding thru the rest.

KurrptSenate 11-13-06 10:44 AM

i will personally never play Halo 2 again after getting this. If Halo 3 doesn't have this aspect of cover and misdirection, Im sure I won't be playing it much at all

Supermallet 11-13-06 11:12 AM

I checked out the Emergence Day site, they said the Play & Win hourly winners would be listed next Monday. I'm hoping I won some Microsoft Points at least.

aktick 11-13-06 12:01 PM

I got this last week and have it sitting at home still unopened, had no time to play this weekend. Based on the talk here, it seems I should keep it? I just want to decide whether I'll like it enough to keep playing a long time before I unwrap it and can't return it.

What kind of connection should I have to play online? IIRC, I'm still at 1.5mbps down, 756k up, or something like that. Will that do the job?

And Corvin, I think you mentioned before when I was asking about games that you weren't much for playing games online - are you enjoying this online?

KurrptSenate 11-13-06 12:08 PM

i was skeptical of this game at first, especially since how I was "taken" with phantasy star universe. After beating the campaign mode with a friend in Georgia (online co-op), it totally removed all doubts. The online multiplayer is even better.

I sincerely hope Halo 3 doesn't have cover and stuff like this. They are different games in different genres and i can't imagine cover like that in a FPS. With their success i can't imagine Bungie would dramatically change the franchise in its last form.

Giantrobo 11-13-06 12:26 PM

Is this a FPS? I thought it was a 3rd person? I like 3rd person games like GRAW and GOW a hell of lot more than just seeing the tip of weapon and some hands. I still love HALO for what it is but it would be cool if it was 3rd person.

Hell, in Star Wars Battlefront you could switch betweeen the 2 modes.

I just realized why you didn't really like GOW. You miss all the pretty colors of the HALO games. GOW is too "Gritty" for you. :p

j/k

KurrptSenate 11-13-06 12:58 PM

halo is friggin pathetic in comparison. Its all run and gun with little or no thought involved. You can be taken out in mere seconds with a sniper rifle. GoW, completely different story.

Michael Corvin 11-13-06 01:00 PM

It does sound a bit premature, but I have to agree that going back to a run & gun style gameplay without cover is going to be difficult.

Yes, with one caveat, I've only played with people on my friends list, which includes a dozen people from here. You can't go wrong with the group this site has going since everyone is basically a mature gamer. Another plus is the level design and overall design of the game. With only 8 players on a map, it makes for an intimate setting along with small maps. There are no huge maps where you run around for minutes at a time looking for people. Gears multiplayer is excellent, it is only topped by the co-op experience(since I prefer the storyline experience). Also there seems to be no general sniping points so far(i.e. one person grabs the sniper and camps the whole match) which is a plus.

I had long since tired of Halo online and Gears has me pumped to play online again.

KurrptSenate 11-13-06 01:13 PM

I won't do it.....period.

I was having some problems talking to a few people when we were playing last night. We basically started with just 3 people, and taking turns being on our own team. After a while, some people joined in, left, came back in with others, etc. It seemed like 1 out of 5 people that would come in, not everyone could actually hear them, which sucks if you were partnered with them, but couldnt communicate.

amped 11-13-06 01:54 PM

Got a question about online co-op and the cog tags. If either yourself or a friend picks one up, is it given to both of you?

You are right, it is third person. I was saying that style cover system wouldn't work in a FPS like Halo. I'm actually digging on Gears now but i still prefer FPS to 3rd person shooters. I don't even mind the gritty atmosphere :p I actually think it is pretty cool in Gears and i believe Halo 3 will be like that in some stages (with the Covenant invasion of Earth).

The cover system can work in a FPS. Rainbow Six: Vegas does it well. It is a first person game but it goes to third person when you lean against a wall.

Blah, blended titles like that i think frequently do neither the 3rd person or the 1st person part as well as they could have. That is also why i dilike ones that let you choose - i remember in RS3 my friend always playing third person, even though he didn't like it as much, because it would let the gamer see slightly around corners. It becomes a metagame element that i dislike. I will admit though that i'm not a big fan of third person shooters and Gears is one of the first i really enjoyed.

What do you guys have for connections, and do you have any issues? I've never played a console game online, and PC games I've played online were years ago.

KurrptSenate 11-13-06 02:36 PM

I have cable internets. When it was installed, the tech said I have 7 megs down, do to me being in close proximity to the box. I have no idea what my upload speed is

To the best of my knowledge and playing the answer is yes, but I wouldn't want to put money on it either.

What's more interesting when you replay levels they won't be there. If you replay a level with a new player they will be there. Only your partner can pick them up though if you already got that particular one.
