The Hype for GEARS OF WAR - are you in ?

I am utterly confounded by the hype and excitement over this game. (and first of all i love shooter games more than any others, so i have tracked this ones progress with great interest)

People on forums across the internet are just ****ing themselves over this game, and tripping over themselves to praise how awesome it looks. The graphics are commonly described as stunning, mind blowing, awesome, Next Gen, revolutionary and "best ever".

What in the hell is going on here ???!??

It doesnt look THAT great. Yes, it looks nice, and looks like fun, but it really just looks like your average shooter. NOTHING about it is revolutionary. I think the graphics look average AT BEST. The animations, textures, explosion effects are just - average looking. (which is still pretty good considering the 360 games). How is this being built up to be the best thing to hit the 360?

But i just dont understand why everyone is going apeshit bannanas over the game. And yes, i did watch all the trailers and in game movie footage, and I thought it had a few moments, but i was left feeling dissapointed. It just looks like your typical xbox game to me. And the "mad world" trailer, everyone just went out of their mind about how cool it was, but i still felt like it was - . . . really plain looking. ?? i dont now- what am i missing?

And only 10 hours for the single player? For a $60 game ? I dont know about it -

Supermallet 10-31-06 05:30 AM

I'm in. If you're watching all the movies and not getting it, well, what am I going to say to convince you?

Save Ferris 10-31-06 06:14 AM

what kind of monitor have you been watching the HD gameplay footage on? I would make sure you're seeing it at 720 HD quality--because it is better than average graphically. As for gameplay--who knows.

Michael Corvin 10-31-06 06:26 AM

I'm hesitant, but I preordered with trade-in credit. Mostly because of peer pressure. Everyone I know is getting it. It seems a bit too overhyped to me.

As for graphics, I think they look stunning. I have to agree with Save Ferris on that one. What kind of display are you using skiblet?

As for average shooter, I have to say, what stop and pop third person shooter is this similar too? And if it is average, what similar style game is better?

I loved the Mad World trailer, btw.

kakihara1 10-31-06 06:32 AM

I am seriously confused by this game. I have it preordered and paid for but I'm still uneasy about it. Yes the game looks like it could be very cool, but on the other hand, does it look revolutionary? some of the videos are amazing looking and others are just kinda....meh. At only 10 hours of gameplay I can't help but think this is just another Quake4 but the multiplayer looks like it could be really cool, although there are only a few maps and not much in the way of gameplay options. Add the fact that you can only have 8 players and even the multiplayer could be lackluster. I think my decision is going to be made at the counter when my copy arrives. :S

Edit* BTW does anyone else thing we're being setup for a ton of microtransactions for maps with this game? It is Epic afterall and their games are the king of add on maps.

skiblet 10-31-06 07:09 AM

im on a NEC Diamondtron 22 in. monitor, but im talking about everything - the HD trailers, the TV ad, the ad at the movies, etc... Im just confused as to why everyone is going bonkers over it. I feel like im missing something -

I think it looks like a fun multiplayer game, but the graphics arent all that. Crysis blows this out of the water.

Bandit03 10-31-06 07:19 AM

Im definately in. Everything I've seen on this game looks amazing.

Sirgey 10-31-06 07:20 AM

For some reason all i can think of when I see this game is brute force...

PixyJunket 10-31-06 07:59 AM

I'm not in. :)

tbird2340 10-31-06 08:21 AM

Honestly, I think they just picked one game to market the hell out of.. Gears just happened to be it.

Is it going to be the best game to ever hit gaming? We'll see I guess.. I really don't think that it's going to hold up to the hype.. I mean.. How could it??

All you hear about is GEARS like the OP said.. While I think it's going to be awesome and way cool I don't think it's going to be like "OMG CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS GAME I AM PLAYING RIGHT NOW?!!?!?!"

Just think it's typical marketing crap to try and be a system seller for those that may be on the fence. I will prolly be getting it but not on release.. COD3 got me!

Well no shit Crysis is better graphically. But really, other than Crysis, there aren't any games that have better graphics than Gears of War. Crysis is way ahead of its time (like the original Far Cry was). Far Cry had outstanding graphics that weren't "outdated" for at least 2 years after its release. Crysis will be the same thing.

Who cares if Gears of War is not revolutionary and just an "average shooter"? Does every single game HAVE to be revolutionary to be enjoyable?

Oh and 10 hours is par for course for shooter type games. The vast majority of them are around 10 hours give or take. Remember quality is better than quantity. I would rather play an amazing game that lasts 10 hours over a 50 hour game that gets boring half way through.

Word. *glares at recent Tales games*

The hype for this game reminds me of Brute Force for Xbox. Everyone said it would be the next Halo, then it turned out to be a good-looking pile of crap.

I'm not saying this is the case with this game, and I always hope a new great game turns out to live up to hype, but when the impressions point out the negatives with the game, the negatives all but straight out say the game play does not live up to the graphics. It just reminds me of Brute Force, but I hope it isn't.

matome 10-31-06 09:06 AM

Looks good, but I'm more looking forward to COD3.

RichC2 10-31-06 09:07 AM

10 hours + solid multiplayer = golden for me.

Shooters have a tendency, even with short runtimes, of getting repetitive (F.E.A.R., for example, only lasts about 8 and got repetitive as hell.) If GoW manages to run a full 10 hours without getting old, I'd be absolutely floored. And I have to say, I can't think of many action games that last much longer than that.

As for the graphics, I wasn't sold on it looking phenomenal until I saw the multiplayer trailers on Gametrailers.com from the last couple of days. The details and bump mapping are second to none. ie: http://www.gametrailers.com/player.p...14561&type=mov

I'm usually against hype as well, as it rarely turns out well (see: KillZone, Brute Force, etc; ) but the game does look fun, plus the promise that it won't just be run and gun for solo sounds like a nice change of pace, hopefully without the frustrations that you get from a title like Double Agent (overly scripted.)

Mok 10-31-06 09:08 AM

I'm in all paid for with trade-in credit, I have this and COD3 paid for. Now the question is where will I find time to play both of them. -confused-

matome 10-31-06 09:11 AM

Yeah, time limitations has forced me to concentrate on one game at a time, so I just pick up a new one once I'm finished. :( Saves me money in the meantime I guess.

BravesMG 10-31-06 09:19 AM

I'm in for $30 after trades, but I'm still not that excited. After all the praise that Prey got, I decided to give it a go. I wasn't bored or anything, but I only finished it just to say that I did. The weapons were repetitive at best, the enemies were idiotic (and there were only about 5 of them total), and the graphics were eh. I'm hoping the hype means this will at least be exciting, but I'm willing to recoup my $30 on trades later if it doesn't. I'm actually looking more forward to F.E.A.R., but my excitement there has dampened huge after hearing they eliminated the save anywhere feature.

Save Ferris 10-31-06 09:29 AM

HALO 1 and 2 were pretty tedius and more of a chore than fun after awhile. I never finished 2. In huge sections I would just run past enemies as much as I could because it was the same damn thing. same walls, same textures, same bad guys.

I hate to tell you this, but if enemy variety is important to you, you won't like FEAR either. FEAR has 4 or 5 types of enemies too. 95% of the game is spent fighting the same soldiers that you see in all the screenshots. Maybe the 360 port has added new enemy types (I don't know if it did or not), but that is the way it was in the PC game.

Losing the save anywhere feature is not a huge loss. The game is fairly easy even for people that don't play many FPS games. You can store healthkits in your inventory and only use them when you need them, and you can store 10 healthkits at a time.

Dpaqs, how come you don't play COD2 on Live! with us?

thematahara 10-31-06 10:01 AM

If the graphics of Gears doesnt impress you, then nothing short of Crisis ever will.

Cant frickin wait for this game.

Deftones 10-31-06 10:08 AM

I was sort of on the fence. But, since I now have a gaggle of Best Buy Bucks to spend, I'll probably pick it up.

msdmoney 10-31-06 10:18 AM

It is just like any other game to me. I will say that the graphics do look pretty stunning. I just watched the multiplayer hd videos and I think the graphics are definitely above average. But I haven't seen anything with the gameplay to tell me the 10 hour game will have enough variety in the experience to make it a great game. I think it is definitely overhyped, I will wait for the reviews.
