Wow.. tough. Trying to remember games that actually had an end back in the early 80's. I guess it would be Zelda and Dragon Warrior. As for arcade, Dragon's Lair, Cliffhanger, Super Mario Bros.

Probably Double Dragon or Vigilante for the SMS. Maybe Contra for the NES...with the cheat. I think I beat Vigilante the second or third time I played it.
I just bought Capcom Collection 1 for the PS2 and some of these games are seriously kicking my ass...to the point where I want to cry or throw my controller at the tv.
Gunsmoke...can't get pass the second stage after about 50 continues
Trojan...Got to the 4th stage and got my ass kicked. I remember beating this game back in the day.
Ghouls n' Ghost...good grief, can't even get passed stage 1.
1942...another tough one.
Commando...same thing
Mercs...I beat this the first time I played it, but only b/c of unlimited continues and you leave off where you die.
I don't know if I've lost serious gaming skills over the years because I remember playing these games on the NES and I would have been in tears back then. Those little white dots for bullets are freakin' hard to dodge.

super mario bros. 1 bitch! Man that was awesome, I felt so empowered beating the last stage, figuring out the pattern in bowsers castle, getting past that last f***ing hammer bros thats so strategically placed before the lava pit at the very end.

One of the King's Quest games, 2 or 3, I think.

First game that came to mind when reading this was Master of the Lamps (C64) so I'm going to go with that.
But, it had to have been something on the Intellivision. One of the D&D games, possibly as I don't think Frog Bog had a completion. I do remember my dad quitting playing games with me when I was 5 or 6 because I started to win. I'll never let that happen to me, my daughters are chumps.

Super Mario Bros., followed by Contra. It's funny that I was considered a gaming god back in the day because of how good I was at those games, and a few months ago when I played Contra I couldn't even get through the energy zone with the 30 lives code. Ugh, skills depleted....

My first was one Super Mario Bros. on NES, but the one I really remember is The Legend of Zelda. I remember playing all day on the last dungeon to beat the game and was surprised when I saw there was a second quest that opened up

Super Mario Brothers like so many others here, but I wouldn't feel any real satisfaction until beating Super Mario Brothers 3. Now THAT was a journey.

The first big one for me was Contra because I used to play every day at work. I finally was able to beat it and the day I did some little kid goes "Why didn't you just use the 30 lives code?". I had no idea their was a code to give you 30 lives so I had been writing down the different boards and how to beat them. It took me about a month to finally beat it, the normal way, and a day to beat it with the code.

Mine was Super Mario 64, even though I'd been playing games for a long time at that point. I never liked anything except the sports games until then.
Damn, that was a fun game.

Zork I (Commodore Vic-20)- I went over a friends house just about every day for at least 2 months and we mapped out everything using huge sheets of paper on tacked onto his bedroom wall. We were relentless in our pursuit to solve this game. Finally - Victory was ours! When Zork II came out I called him and he said there was no way in hell he was going to go through that again.

It should be a poll between Super Mario Bros., Zelda, or some Atari 2600 game.
I don't remember if I beat Zelda first or super mario bros. I think it was Zelda. The crowning jewel in my early achievements would have to be Bionic Commando. Took a couple years but I finally beat it. I remember one magazine considered it unbeatable.
