Haha I didn't know Kmart still existed. Good to see they haven't changed at all.

Good god, I'm so glad I didn't get this system. You had it for two days? I thought by now that the new stock would be less of a problem. Guess not.

While I bought a 360 fairly early in the lifespan of the system, am happy about it, and it hasn't crashed yet, I am mindful of this and have avoided Dead Rising thus far because of it. This "red ring of death" problem seems pretty disasterous and seems about as prevelant, if not more, than the old PS2 "disc read error." Out of the 5 or 6 people I know who bought the system early, only myself and one other haven't had to send it back yet. I bought the extended warranty from Microsoft just to be safe (and one of those cooling fan contraptions), but it still seems like a hassle. Hopefully the PS3 and Wii won't have the same issues, but I'm sure that there will be snags with both...hopefully just not as quickly and widespread as this has been.

My warranty is up in Nov so I got Dead Rising to push the thing and hopefully break it (if its going to break). In the end though, its been fine. Im glad at least now they'll fix it free even when my warranty is up!

As for which system I wouldn't worry about? Probably the Wii since it's almost half the price and I never had a problem with Nintendo. But let me just say X-box is my favorite system before you begin calling me a troll.
Consoles I haven't had a problem with
X-BOX
PS2 (bought years later, so I missed out of the Disc Read Error batch)
Gamecube
Dreamcast

The PS3 wouldn't surprise me at all, given the high rate of PS2 launch units with problems.
That said, I don't worry about this with any company when buying consoles in general.
The 360 issues would give me pause if I wanted to buy one now, especially with rumors of one with a redesigned CPU etc. coming out next year.

But, you have to factor in they were using essential flash media in all systems except for the Gamecube. But, the Gamecube was built pretty solid, so I never heard much of issues with them.

I got that 3 red light of death just few weeks ago, on very same day the warranty date expired! Thank god that they would repair it under warranty.
I'm going to get that extended warranty from Microsoft.

Yeah, didn't they extend the warranty?

According to the latest EGM podcast the newer Elites now have the board covered in epoxy. This should hopefully prevent the chips from popping loose from the board due to the heat warping it.
Heat is a major issue with these new consoles. I'm really not happy with the heat from the PS3 either though it does seem better able to handle it.

HERE is little explanation of the 360's design flaw (X-clamps) that is what typically causes all the 3-red-lights-of-death. But it's mostly about how to fix it yourself, if you're so inclined.
Here are the results from 102 people that tried this fix:
1. Fixed the 3RLOD, No issues at all now, No freezes, works fine - 98
2. Fixed the 3RLOD, still video freezes occasionally - 1
3. Mixed results, sometimes works with no 3LOD - 1
4. Didn't fix the 3LOD - 2

There must be more than one kind of "Red Ring of Death" problem. I had mine do it twice (both after Dashboard updates), but all I had to do was power-cycle it and it came back up just fine.

Okay, I received my 360 today. They included a letter saying:
I guess that answer to the question above that I got another warranty for replacement 360.

Maybe he didn't have the warranty and didn't want to pay for it?
Or didn't want to hassle with it in the sense that it seems nearly everyone will break sooner or later?
I'm sure as hell not buying one until they come out with a more reliable version. $400 for something that is almost guaranteed to need replaced at some point in time is absurd (I've been gaming since the NES and never had a console every stop working, and most I still have around and still work fine).
