best racing game on Xbox?

What is the best racing game on the original Xbox? I'm getting an Xbox soon that a friend is giving me, and I'd like to pick up a racing game. I've had Burnout 3, Project Gotham, and Midnight Club among others recommended to me, but I'm not sure which is best. 16x9 and 480p support is also important b/c I have an HDTV. thanks

PGR 2 and Rallisport 2 are my 2 favorites for Xbox, and probably for any system really.

Burnout 3 IMHO. I haven't played PGR2, and I've heard it's great, but having played video games for over a decade (I guess that's not saying much anymore... but still) I've never had such a rush as my first few races in Burnout 3.

If your looking for a simulator style racing game in the realm of say Gran Turismo then hands down the best racing game for Xbox is Forza Motorsports. Supports surround sound, etc. and is the best racing simulator to date on the box as far as I and many are concerned. If you want arcade style racing then go with the ones mentioned above, they all offer some great fun.

Burnout 4. 3 is great, but the crash mode was completely ruined by multipliers. I didn't play 4 on the original box however (360 version instead), but afaik, there on only some new courses and a couple online features that are different.

Plus there are many more modes of racing in four that it will take a while to get bored. Road rage, crashbreaker races, timed laps, grand prix, plus the crash mode and online play are a blast.

OutRun 2 is also good. It's a fun, laid back arcade racer. There is a "sequel" that I haven't played called OutRun 2006: Coast to Coast, but from what I've read it's mostly the same game as O2 with a few new tracks and goals. If you can get CTC as cheap as O2, that would be the one to get.

I don't think it's widescreen, but it is definitely 480p, even though the back of the box seems to indicate otherwise. Does anyone know if CTC has a widescreen mode?

I agree with all of the above mentioned games, but another one to look for is Apex. I'm fairly certain it can be had for $10 or so at GS. Check it out.

RalliSport 2 is definitely widescreen, and my vote goes to that game. It's phenomenal.

(Just realized it's not backwards compatible so I can't play it).

Just look on the back of the box for 480/720p support, then you'll know if it's in WS.

My picks:

Rallisport 2
Toca 2
Test Drive: Eve of Destruction
Forza Motorsport
PGR 2

That should cover it -- all types of racing, the best of each genre.

My favorites:

Colin McCrae 05
Toca 2 (did not play 3,maybe 3 is slightly better)
PGR 2
Outrun 2 (or Coast 2 Coast, both are great)
Forza
Burnout Revenge

Not necessarily. There are many Xbox games that support 480p, but not that many with a widescreen mode.

Arcade racer: Burnout Revenge

Simulator: Forza Motorsport

I too enjoy simulator type racers and can say with confidence that you will love driving on the Nurburgring in Forza. I think it's the best rendition of that particular track in any video game. I was excited to read that Forza 2 is currently in progress for the X360.

Here's something I thought was funny right after my post...

Customization of your vehicle in:

Forza Motorsport - color of your car, decals, coil stiffness, dampening and rebound, anti-roll bars, tire pressure, tire compound, ride height, rims, spoiler adjustment, decreasing vehicle weight, braking bias f/r, torque bias f/r (4wd cars only), cambering, toe-in/out, upgrading turbo/intercooler, upgrading camshaft, pistons and rods, installing an entirely different motor, and even color of window tint! There are a few more I'm sure I'm forgetting at the moment.

Burnout Revenge - color of your car. Hahahaha!

That's just it, depends if you are a sim guy or an arcade guy. Games like GT & Gotham bore me to tears. To me, I could give a shit about all those options you can do in Forza... I just want to drive really fast.

Exactly! If anything I'm praising Burnout Revenge for delivering on the fun factor. I'll admit, I was more sim than arcade when it comes to racing games which is why I was shocked to find myself enjoying BR. Because of this game I'm now split between the two racing types. I can no longer say that I enjoy simulators more.

Burnout 3 has a better racing game, Burnout 4 has a better crash mode.

Neither touch the awesomeness of Burnout 2 in terms of Crash mode, but 3 is the best (thus far) of the series.

I concur!

To the OP, both of these titles have the features you're looking for...480p, 16:9 enhanced, 5.1 Dolby Digital.

Pick up both then, play. enjoy. repeat.
