Also , now you run into the resolution problem that the movies from the memory stick are of lower resolution than UMD's so the picture will suffer.
Now the dvd quality format they push will be a bit lower now that it is on memory stick (and the quality is still not that bad... but .. still) |
Sony just needs to understand that they suck as of right now. And I’m talking as a whole, psp, blue ray, ps3 etc. This movie thing is just another way to draw people in when they see a new product on the shelf and have no idea and are going "oh movies. I like movies. I'll try this thing out." They had their time in the lime light it’s over. Nintendo makes a better hand held product the DS and Microsoft makes a better console the 360.
Sony has always had problems with trying to push their crappy media formats on people, I mean look at mini disc. I mean the design team and the people in charge there should take the honorable way out for a Japanese company. A self inflicted dagger wound to the stomach to die a slow and painful honorable death. |
Everyone be on the lookout for those discounted UMDs and keep us posted.
|
Wow, I guess people didn't really want to watch movies on a 4 inch screen.
|
UMDs were a dumb idea.
Selling $100 memory sticks with a movie on it is an really dumb idea. What will they think of next? A $600 console? |

Mike I hope your being serious, and not funny or else my post is going to look idiotic, but I actually like these things and when I see the price go way down (where they should have priced them to begin with) I will DEFINATLY be snagging them up, I already own quite a few..... |
heh, don't see why people get all worked up over a format whether a success or not. i have a few umd movies b/c i'm too lazy to transfer movies to a memory stick. other than that, no skin off of my nose if umd movies fail. (i hope umd games get better and more prevalent though). i, too, will be looking out for cheap umd movies :D
here's a doom and gloom article i found about dvd while looking for past format wars... :P http://www.robertsdvd.com/failure.html |

I for one always thought UMD was a stupid idea.
$20 bucks for a lower resolution DVD, without extra features on a four inch screen. I just can't see the point in forking over the cash for any single UMD. |
I gotta go dig up some old PSP threads - I swear there were people talking about how great UMDs were...
|
I still don't get the thread title.

Let's see who they are. LOL! |
uh oh, I remember when that ancient DS thread got bumped, it was funny, I probably said some really stupid things, I'm nervous now :).

Here's a good blast from the past - some of the posters don't seem to have a problem with the UMD format. It's funny to read the comments about the price (I'm including myself in that - they really did surprise me on the price.)
Anyway, here's PSP specs! |

You could add ATRAC, their proprietary audio compression that never became as popular as MP3 or even AAC. |

Yeah, I remember ATRAC being thrown around as a PSP thing. The only reason I remember that is because that was the first I'd heard of the format.
|
How is that pronounced? I mentally pronounce it "ay-track" which of course doesn't help instill confidence in the product ;)
I may have said this earlier, and maybe I'm the wrong demographic, but UMD disks always struck me as silly/stupid. Charge five bucks more and pack it in with the real dvd; or sell them for less than, say, 8 bucks, and I *might* consider it. But I don't want to pay *more*, to get *less*, and only be able to play it on one small, portable device, that isn't extremely widespread so my chance of recouping any costs by reselling it are slim. Then again, I have a widescreen bigscreen HDTV and a 7.1 surround system, so going portable to watch a movie seems silly in itself. |

BTW, I decided today that I may be ready to take the plunge on an Xbox360 and my PSP has been sold. I liked the PSP overall as a small multimedia device and it still has a ton of potential, but I was really having some headaches with some of the conversion software available and decided I would just let it go. I will miss it, but rarely ever used it for gaming other than MLB06 which I can get for the PS2 so keeping it just seemed silly. I'm selling it now while I can still get a good return on it. |
Hey, I still love my PSP and I love all my UMD movies. While waiting for my wife today I watched Animal House on my PSP, it sure as hell was better carrying my PSP with Animal House than lugging my portable dvd player! I love UMD's!

The DS Lite has a similar add-on that has a 4GB drive. No way I'm biting. |
Last night I watched Devil's Rejects on UMD, it was awesome! I love my UMD movies and I just bought Evil Dead 1 & 2, so I am now reaching 50 of them, and I hope I make it to 100!

I picked up Goonies and Happy Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone for about 10 bucks apiece at FYE last week. Unfortunately they only had a few titles marked so low.

Finally made it to FYE today. Picked up:
HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE (Not marked on sale, but rang up at $9.99) CLERKS (Marked $9.99, but rang up at regular price. The guy hesitated, but gave me the discount. ROBOTS (Marked $14.99, rang up at $14.99 -- I know that's not a huge bargain, but the kids have been asking for that one) I also saw ROMEO MUST DIE, RUSH HOUR, RUSH HOUR 2, and SWORDFISH marked at $9.99. (These are all Warner or New Line titles...hmmm...) Please post any more bargains! |
