How a game of such obvious greatness could come so close to launching without us having created a whole subforum for it is beyond me. :hscratch:

If they're going to do that, they need to release a cheap arcade controller. That $80 DOA 4 controller is too much, and the standard 360 controller sucks for SFII.

As for that Lumines shit, this is exactly what I feared would happen with microtransactions. Hopefully downloads of it will plummet and Microsoft will learn they can't pull this shit.

ChrisHicks 08-24-06 09:28 PM

its just the beginning stages of the 100.00 games. first you'll drop 60.00 for the disc, then you'll have to buy the new stuff for the game at a price of 10.00 and up.then they'll release more game content until they get almost 100.00 out of the sale.

Supermallet 08-24-06 09:37 PM

Yeah, I refused to pay for those Ghost Recon extra levels. Give me a break. I have paid for some of the extra Oblivion content (not the horse armor), but those haven't been overly expensive, and some of them have added some awesome things.

I'm just thanking my lucky stars for Nintendo, who seem to understand that milking the consumer out of all of their cash isn't necessarily in their best interest as a company.

edstein 08-24-06 09:55 PM

I paid $30 for Lumines on the PSP. I don't think the XBL version will cost that much even with all of the add-ons. It's a great game and worth price posted. You guys are just bitching because there is an added cost. If they did it like xmiyux said, $20 vs $15 plus $5, no one would say anything.

Supermallet 08-24-06 10:13 PM

It's a small step into a larger scheme. Lumines may only cost $20 total, but if people start getting used to it, next thing you know, as Chris said, $100 games.

I would almost rather do that then pay $60 for a "sequel" every year. Sports games have been doing this for years, you just get a new disk and case. As for GRAW, $15 added a lot to the game. How much different was Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike from Ghost Recon 2?

How many people bought Morrowind only to turn around and buy the Game of the Year edition?

I guess my point is, in the past, the only way developers could release additional content was "expansion packs". Now they have the relatively less expensive (development wise) option of releasing content through live.

In perspective, if people are dumb enough (that might be too strong...willing) to drop $5 each for frogger, pac-man, galaga, etc. and pay for picture packs and other crap, Lumines is easily worth $15 plus whatever they charge for the addition content.

(Oh wait, this isn't real money anyway, these are marketplace points... Microsoft=genius)

SteelgearX 08-25-06 03:03 AM

Well, like some people here already said it might not be the worst thing ever right now, but this is only the beginning. It's gonna get progressively worse.

I agree. I'm probably one of the last 360 owners who hasn't bought points and hasn't purchased anything in the Marketplace. If is doesn't have "FREE" next to it, I keep ooooon keepin' oooon.

Hey, I don't fault MS and others for trying to get my money, but I don't have to make it easy for them. :D

Once gaming goes in the direction that some of you posters predict, I'll just stop gaming all together...or worse...I'll just play Nintendo games. I mean after all, they're not out to "milk" players right? They do it out of an altruistic vision of Utopian sensitivity right? ;)

I think that is everyone's gripe. No one has a problem with the total cost, just give it to us up front instead of some bullshit pricing scheme that makes the game seem cheap at first but are required to download more ($$$) later on.

Like I said, give it to me for $25-$30. The whole game. Put it on a disc for retail at that cost. Actually that is a good idea. I might wait for that to happen before I pick it up, as I have a gut feeling they will.

RichC2 08-25-06 08:35 AM

Yeah I have no problem with expansion pack downloads (ie: GRAW, Oblivion) but that said, X360 games really need to drop to $49.99 new across the board... now.

What do you have against these upcoming 'indie' games who dont distribute to the retail stores and will only be selling on the LIVE marketplace? If you like the game, does it have to be free?

Why single me out? ;) Hey I'm basically a Capitalist so I'm all for what they're doing. However, I don't have to participate in it if I don't want too. Believe me; the gaming industry won't die because Giantrobo is Frugal.

That's too bad. I bet with $25 bucks you could get a lot more gameplay out of your system, much more so than buying the average $60 game.

Im saying why be opposed to the method at which new games come to the gamers? If you can buy a fun game online for $20 why does it matter that it doesnt come with a case/disk? You make it sound like its the end of video gaming for you if its downloadable.

Resale. Taking it to a friends house. Loaning it out. Hard drive crash(always have a copy handy on disc) Having a manual that actually explains the game and how to earn specific achievements(sounds silly but go for Zuma's and you will quickly learn a book would be nice).

So there are almost a half dozen reasons right there.

The wireless PC adaptor

The Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows (release date: fall, price TBD) enables players who use both consoles and PCs to attach wireless accessories to their PC. Using a simple USB port, players can plug this tool into their PC permitting other wireless controllers and accessories to be used with their PC.

If that were true in my my case...I'D BE DOING THAT NOW. But I'm not, soooo what's your point? :p Frankly, the demos I've played for most of these Marketplace only games have sucked to me. None of them impressed me enough to buy them. Belive me, if any of them did anything for me I'd buy them.

Did I? I thought I was focusing on prices and the nickel and dime tactics. Oh well, since we're on the subject, I would rather have a disc. When my XBOX died I lost some paid for downloads and I had to pay to download them again when I got my 360. That sucked...

That is a good idea and the Germans make some incredible board games. That being said i commute for my grad classes combined with doing some of them online with the school so it isn't like i'm chilling at a student union.

Holy Crap, I just picked up a Royal Flush on the river! Made 100,000 on it as well.

Had a King, Queen of diamonds in my hand, picked up the Jack, Ace on the flop and the 10 on the river. The guy that had 3 Aces shit a brick, cursed at me, and left the room in the huff.

Can you repeat that in English? You young folk and your slang these days!

Just kidding! AWESOME play! I was leading this morning amongst my friends with most money earned...I bet it has changed now!

pinata242 08-25-06 02:09 PM

Awesome play!? Either he checked down to the river with an overly stupid person slow-playing a set of aces with flush and straight draws on the board or he made a few questionable calls ;)

Congratulations on your draws holding up, Flay!

But this is exactly what I was talking about yesterday why it doesn't take skill to get a Royal, just luck :)

fujishig 08-25-06 02:24 PM

Continuing the "nickel and dime" debate:
Noticed last night that some new downloads for the upcoming Samurai Warriors 2 were available. They're actually new bodyguards/characters that you have to pay for.

Can't wait for the first fighting game to try something like this...

So did he have pocket rockets or did he pick up another ace on 4th street? Was he betting hard or were you doing the betting? So basically my questions are:

1. His Pocket Cards
2. The Flop was J Diamonds and A diamonds what was the third card?
3. Fourth Street?
4. How did the betting go?

1. He had Ace of spades, 9 of spades
2. Third Card in the flop was a 7 of spades, I think.
3. Turn was the Ace of Hearts.
4. I can't remember exact numbers on the betting, but he played it cool after that Ace popped up on the turn. He didn't go all in until the 10 of diamonds came up on the river. As for me, I was just calling everyone else until the last round of betting.

Yah, but I still need a four of a kind and a straight flush. Probably take a while.

Xbox Live Arcade Goes Un-Live

http://gizmodo.com/assets/resources/...oxlivepack.jpg

A collection of titles from the Xbox Live Arcade is now available for purchase. The Live Arcade Unplugged will hit stores on September 5 for $40. It will include Geometry Wars, Wik: Fable of Souls, Outpost Kaloki X, Bejeweled 2 Deluxe, Hardwood Backgammon and Texas Hold'em. The package will also have demos of Uno, Marble Blast Ultra (a personal favorite of mine) and Feeding Frenzy. They also toss in one free month of Xbox Live—they seem to be handing these out like candy recently. – Travis Hudson

I found the official Microsoft page for it (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x...relessheadset/) which says: "Conveniently located Power On/Off, Volume, and Mute Controls are right where you need them." So looks like you're in luck. Also, the MSRP is $60. Kinda steep, but I may pick one up because of my loathing for wires. ;)

Next-Gen Bulls***? 22 Thumbs
Since almost everyone has Madden NFL 07 on the brain this week (and not one review I've read so far has mentioned it), I feel obligated to talk about the 360 version's downloadable content.

Hidden in loading screens is the fact that this year's game will soon offer alternate uniforms and historic stadiums via Xbox Live. Sounds good, right? Wrong--we've been getting stuff like this in Madden since the PS1 days. Why can't the retail version include it, especially when we're paying 10 extra bucks?

But here's the bigger question: Will extra uniforms and stadiums cost Xbox Live spacebucks? "We are excited to offer new EA SPORTS downloadable content this year in Madden NFL 07 for certain items," says an EA spokesperson. "We have not announced the details of this program at this time, but will have information for you in the coming weeks." Hmm, sounds like someone's dodging the question.

But let's say EA decides to charge for the content. That's absolutely ridiculous. For starters, as I mentioned before, alternate uniforms and stadiums have become a standard feature in Maddens. And, more importantly, such content doesn't alter/improve the gameplay experience. Paying for a multiplayer map does just that, but what EA's offering is basically a color palette swap.

Now, I know football fans want to have the most accurate game possible and would love to have all this stuff for their game (I know I want to have my beloved Cleveland Browns' third jersey), but if you start buying this extra content, then you're telling EA and other publishers that you're willing to pay extra for stuff that should be in the game to begin with. And you become part of the problem.
