Quake 4???!!?

I just bought this game, chose multiplayer, and viewed the list of internet games. And there are like ZERO good ones!

The list is 140 servers, but most of them are empty. And the ones with players have really bad pings and few players on top of that - no huge games.

What the hell is going on? Did I buy a game that only 100 people around the world play online???

I got the update - that was the problem.

But man...still there aren't very many good servers!!!!!

Did I just waste money on a product no one else uses?

With so many other options most people aren't going to play the same old tired deathmatch, ctf, etc.

Quake 3 has a ton of servers because it has a massive following and probably because it's straight from id where as Quake 4 was done by Raven. It's not a very popular game.

I'm a buffoon. I've purchased an unpopular game!

I think Doom 3 doesn't have a huge internet-multiplayer following, either, at least compared to Quake 3. I know Doom 3 is quite the resource hog and was created with single player in mind ... And I think it only officially supports a limited number of players per server.

Back on topic, I was disappointed with Quake 4's following, too. I think Raven followed Quake 3's blueprint of fast multiplay, but like Doom 3, system requirements may have hurt its cause.

I played some Q4 online when it first came out. However, I had to crank down my settings to 800x600/2x AA or 1024x768 no AA...and that was on a 9800pro. I think the system requirements are the killer here for J6P gamer.

It runs a lot better now on my vanilla x800. Typical id game engine problem, takes too much horsepower.

Bingo. I still play UT2k4 and Quake 3 because I can't sustain playable frames in Quake 4 with either too many players or wide open spaces. I think Raven did a nice job otherwise, but that pretty much kills it.
