Blasphemy! ;)

2D platformers will always be my favorite genre. Especially ones that have exploration and other elements built in like Super Mario World, the 2D metroid games, and the metroidvainias.

He listed 2 platformers as his favorites so I'm guessing you two actually agree? ;)

That's right, go Genesis!! wooooo!! Actually there were definitely some significant differences between what each hardware could and couldn't do. Still, both were awesome platforms for gaming.

Actraiser was so unbelievably good at the time.. it really floored me completely.. such a shame about the sequel. The only problem I had with the game was it just seemed too short, even back then. A bit more complexity and depth on the 'sim city' part would have been awesome!

I always found the Genesis 3 button controller was perfect (apart from the slight lack of buttons on some arcade games). Still even back then the snes controller was too small for my hands.

It's all about the rings!! Super sonic!!!

I have both but I choose SNES because they have more RPG which I loved.

Final Fantasy 2 - First FF game I played.
Final Fantasy 3 - A classic :)
Secret of Mana - I LOVE THIS ONE!!!!
Ys Wanders from Ys III - Another favorite.
Breath of Fire - Music is fantastic.
Super Mario RPG - Great RPG!!!
Lufia and the Fortress of Doom - Played this countless of time.
Dungeon Master - Not as good as the Amiga version but still fun to played.
Shadowrun - The first cyberpunk game I ever played.
Legend of Zelda:Link to the Past - Not really RPG but still a classic. :)

I'd go with SNES, hands down. Genesis had some good games like X-Men and Ecco The Dolphin, as well as EVO, but the first party titles for the SNES alone were enough to make it the dominant system.

Genesis was my baby, I love it still to this day.

Oh the hours spent playing "Streets of Rage", the Sonic games, and "Road Rash 2".

I have no real problems with the SNES except that it really was a more RPG centered system, and RPG games aren't what i like.

Scores some points for "Turtles in Time" thought. The SNES is probably the last system Nintendo made that i really liked.

I only had a SNES and loved it (and had to beg, borrow, and plead to get it way after launch). I was young, but the ONLY time I ever even wished I had a Genesis was for Mortal Kombat 1.

I love Sega and think that (back then) they had pretty good first-party output.. but I've always hated the Sonic series and think it's one of the poorest platform games out there. The graphics were pretty good and it WAS pretty cool to zoom through a level through all the loops and tunnels like a roller-coaster.. but that wore out as quick as they claimed the character to be (and stopped after the first level). You were limited to only running and jumping for the four games the system had, there was no exploration (and you were penalized for trying) and you rarely died as all you needed to do to keep alive was grab at least one ring when you took a hit. I guess it's just a different style of game but I always felt Sega had better stuff to be known for than Sonic games.

I did however, think the music on Sonic CD was pretty sweet.

Quake1028 02-10-06 07:05 PM

SNES for sure.

T1000 02-12-06 01:22 PM

One of my favourite games of all time is "Robocop vs Terminator" so I have to vote Megadrive (Genesis), just..

dcswirl 02-12-06 02:45 PM

I was way into sports games back then, so Genesis for me. I remember trading my SNES to my friend for his Genesis.

Michael Ballack 02-12-06 08:12 PM

I was a Sega Genesis man. I always maintained that there were better games for it and I enjoyed the graphics better too.

AOD 02-13-06 09:21 AM

I was a SEGA guy from the old SMS days. The Genesis was the greatest. Altered Beast---back then I thought graphics could get no better. I've bought every SEGA system they've come out with, and would buy another. I've got a soft spot for SEGA and give them much respect.

PixyJunket 02-13-06 09:35 AM

Speaking of the Genesis, I scored some good games at Game Crazy this weekend. Streets of Rage, Aladdin (complete), Sword of Vermillion (complete), Sorcerer's Maze (?), Revenge of Shinobi and Shadow Dancer for $16.

Aladdin (assuming we're talking about the disney version - I don't know if there is another, but just to be safe) was really fun. I got stuck on one board for about 2 hours because I always jumped prematurely on this one ledge and died a horrible death about 2500 times. I still have nightmares.

raven56706 02-13-06 10:34 AM

Mortal Kombat series was much better on SNES then Genesis.(graphics wise)

Homer Simpson 02-13-06 10:39 AM

Owned both (still do), SNES by a longshot was better IMO. I won't even waste time listing how many great games there were for the SNES.

Ginwen 02-13-06 01:02 PM

Both are great.

I picked Sega for Toejam and Earl, Road Rash 2, Streets of Rage 2, Phantasy Star 2 - 4 (Phantasy Star 3 was the first console RPG I played, and yes, I actually liked it), Shining Force!, Sonic, and lots of other greats, but SNES has some really fun RPGs.

Deadpool 02-13-06 01:25 PM

I owned both consoles but really liked the SNES much better than the Genesis. SNES has been covered well but what eventually got me to buy a Genesis was because of the Sport Titles. They played much better on the Genesis, the controls were better, graphics were better, etc. I remember buying Madden for the SNES :( My biggest gripes were the clunky framerate and the fact that there were only 3 receivers to throw to instead of 4. Talk about crack programming  I went out and got a Genesis along with Madden, Altered Beast  and Shinobi   I played both consoles until I broke them. Both were great, but the SNES had more games I wanted to play.

Wasn't the SNES version censored though?

If you want to get technical, the MKII 32X version was leaps and bounds above anything at the time. Would you still call that a "Genesis" version? Borderline, yes. You had to have a Genesis to play it. Don't get me wrong, the SNES was a good system. I just thought it was missing that "something".
