Anyone that didn't have both systems in their day missed out. Having said that, I greatly prefer the SNES. If the SNES had a slightly faster processor it would have been no contest at all.

The genesis is great these days just because the games are so much cheaper than SNES games for the most part. I guess that speaks for what most people prefer and whats holds up better to this day.

SEGA. I loved this console...loved it so much I had the SEGA CD (the one that went on the bottom of the console) AND 32X. I wish I still had it now :(

chess 02-09-06 07:51 AM

Owned both...still own an SNES.

Shooters galore, Mario All Stars, Super Mario, Mario Kart, Dr. Mario, Link to the Past, and Super mothafuckin Metroid.

Can't beat that.

Yep, I actually have the game packs that went into the Pioneer intercative Laserdisc player and played them through that. Good stuff.

I have to go with Super NES. Two reasons:

1- The Genesis controller was awkward and uncomfortable. The SNES controller could be the best controller of any system ever.

2- The best two 16-bit games were on SNES only: Chrono Trigger and Super Mario Kart.

I have to disagree here.

Once you had the Sega Genesis controller with 6 buttons on the face...it was perfect!

devynal 02-09-06 08:53 AM

I remember when Nintendo came under fire with the SNES since its processing speed/power were "much lower" than the Genesis'. But as we are shown time and time again, it's the games that make the system, not the hardware.

SNES all the way baby! In fact, my girlfriend found my power adapter for it while cleaning my closet; I fired it up instantly. I was elated!

Speaking of.. I picked up a JVC X'Eye for $10 at a pawn shop a while ago.. and I guess it was worth it to play Popful Mail, but are there ANY other decent games for Sega CD? Robo Aleste is a must-buy if I can find it, I'm not really interested in Snatcher and I've got both Lunar games for Playstation.

And I'll disagree with this.. the Genesis 6 Button pad is horrible. It's too small (half the size of the standard Genesis controller) and the D-pad is flimsy as hell. I was horrified to find out that it was the official Sega product. Though, the Saturn 6 Button pad (the Japanese one) is perfect.

Genesis all day long. Toe Jam and Earl, Sonic, and Joe Montana Sports Talk ruled me. Not to mention great games like Vectorman, Earthworm Jim, Streets of Rage, Comix Zone, Even Altered Beast and the X-men games (which aren't great games exactly, but still floored me when I first played it). Plus my mom would say the Genesis too as it had that headphone jack. The "bleep, bloops" drove her kind of crazy .

However I did own both systems and the SNES and Genesis complimented each other perfectly. Such a great time to be into games. I wonder how much of that was because I was young and how much of it is based on the strength of the games themselves? It's kind of hard to seperate the two.

Congrats on that $10 purchase, that's heck of a find.

Herea are some good games to track down:

Dark Wizard <- MUST GET
Eternal Champions CD (might not have aged well)
Sonic CD
Shining Force CD
NHL 94 CD (much better sound gives it a better atmosphere to my favorite hockey game)
Vay
Batman (love the driving/flying portion)
Mansion of Hidden Souls (freaky, but like most FMV intensive Sega CD games, it is very grainy)
Soul Star
Final Fight
Earthworm Jim Special Edition
Keio Flying Squadron (good luck finding that)
Heart of the Alien (True sequel to Out of This World, includes OoTW)

I really don't think it did, however I think it had a great premise for a fighting game and would love to see it revisited with some updated mechanics/graphics (note: keep it 2d though).

slop101 02-09-06 10:22 AM

Yeah, not even close - SNES by freaking mile.

Graphics, games, variety, breadth, depth - SNES trouced the Genesis in EVERY way possible.

Gallant Pig 02-09-06 01:06 PM

You should have included the TurboGrafx 16 by NEC. :) I voted for Sega and know that Nintendo will win. Suffice to say they were all 3 brilliant machines.

I can top those. Actraiser. Best soundtrack on the system. Hands down.

deadpool24 02-09-06 02:26 PM

Snes is better overall in quality games. some great ones are contra 3:the alien wars, link to the past, super castlevania, zombies ate my neighbors. genesis had the best side-scrolling fighting games though like altered beast and streets of rage.

Good buy. I picked up an X'Eye to replace my failing Model 1 SegaCD a few years ago, and haven't had any troubles with it. It's made of alot sturdier stuff, apparently.

As far as game suggestions go, here's what I'd go with:

Panic!
Sonic CD
Shining Force CD
Dark Wizard
Vay
Final Fight CD
Keio Flying Squadron
Heart of the Alien: Out of this World 2
Flashback (unless you've already got the 3D0 or PC version)
Ecco the Dolphin 1 or 2

Johnny Boy 02-09-06 04:15 PM

I was a fan of the side-scrollers. The Genesis is an easy choice for me.

Strider (best music I ever heard from any game on Genesis or SNES)
Golden Axe
Streets of Rage (2nd best music!)
Altered Beast
Chakan: the Forever Man

I also loved most of the sports games, especially NBA Live 95. I sold all of my Genesis games 9 years ago, and now I'm starting to miss them! Not really.

The only game I ever owned with that fat plumber in it was Donkey Kong for the Atari 2600. Not sure why. I never really enjoyed Mario games.

yeah thunderforce had some pretty nice tunes. What I meant is that I can't imagine how Final Fantasy 3 would sound on the Genesis, or Chrono Trigger for that matter

and actraiser, thanks for pointing that out. Unbelievable music, the second one, although impossible to beat, had some excellent orchestrated music too.

I was the exact opposite. Always had a hard time getting into the Sonic games. Just too fast paced and action oriented for me to really get into. They were just, blaze through, beat the boss, see the credits and never touch them again games for me.

Where as the Mario games had more depth and incentive to replay to find hidden exits, levels etc. Especially Super Mario World with the 96 exits to find.

Puzznic 02-09-06 05:13 PM

Yeah, i like the Sonic games as much as the next guy but they aren't even in the same league as the Mario games.

Johnny Boy 02-09-06 05:19 PM

I don't really like Sonic or Mario.
