Mine is:

Another friend of mine had a pretty good idea. We both signed into xbox live and used our headsets to communicate during the game.

UncleGramps 11-15-05 10:04 PM

sdcrym and I just had a pretty good match. We seemed more or less evenly matched, and the connection was perfect. I also learned that we apparently have the same first name.

sdcrym 11-15-05 10:08 PM

heh, indeed. it seems like it's kind of a pain to try to meet up with two or more friends

goLUCKY 11-15-05 10:45 PM

Great match Scott aka sdcrym

Pretty much.

"Names" or "Gamertags" are presently non-exclusive, only the friend code (ID) is unique. This is done to allow people to call themselves whatever they want everytime they play and to avoid "online stalking" if you will.

The problem is there's not a fully functional friends list like in xbox live. You have a friends list, which is people you've exchanged friend codes with. But there's no way to know that they're online unless they're actively searching for a game, when a little icon pops up. Even then you don't know who it is, just that a friend is searching for a game. If you're in the middle of a game with someone else, tough luck. No way to invite that person to join you after the match is over either. If two people are connected and a third person wants to join, you have to quit the connection and have all three people search for friend games at the same time. And all that communication to get everybody on the same wavelength takes place outside of the game, via phone, IM, this thread, etc... not very efficient.

sdcrym 11-16-05 12:00 AM

Some other gripes... it appears that the online aspect of the game is vs. mode only, no battle mode. Also, it seems that only four people can be in one game, although I haven't gotten more than two at once so far.

And of course the damn item catch-up programming. A couple times I've been in first the entire race, finish line in sight... oh look, a lightning bolt and two blue shells, gee, now I'm in last... :hairpull:

This game's great and I haven't even tried it online. But am I the only one that has a problem with the control? My right hand cramps up real bad after holding on to the A-button for just a couple minutes.

It's the furthest button on the DS, so holding down on it is kinda akward, as it feels like I'm pinching the edge of my DS. It'd make all the difference in the world if it was the B-button instead - but it won't let you change control settings.

This does seem like the best Mario Kart to date. Now it's a question of balance and how well it all fits together.

After I figured out that it wanted the actual WEP # and not my passphrase setup was simple. I played a few races earlier, finally won on the third race. Fun stuff, I really wish the battle mode was available for regional.

Anyone know the regular price of this? My Fry's didn't get their shipment tonight and resorted to giving out rain checks and I unfortunately couldn't go to one and grab one.

Bingo. I played it for about 30 minutes and noticed the same thing right away. My wife played it for less than 10 minutes and had the same problem.

The MSRP for this game is 34.99, however I picked one up at Fry's yesterday for $24.99. The sticker on the game did say $34.99.

dcswirl 11-16-05 08:04 AM

I was lucky enough to walk into Gamestop and pick up a used one! The box does say for display purposes only, but it appeared to have never been played.

How much was it?

How are the controls with the Dpad? I was kind of hoping they would utilize the Mario 64 touch screen controls but they didn't.

gimmepilotwings 11-16-05 12:36 PM

The controls with the D-Pad are not bad. The biggest gripe HAVING to use the A button for Acceleration. it is the worst button. Having to keep your index finger on the R trigger to power slide/turbo makes your right hand/thumb begin to cramp. All it takes is 10 minutes before you want to take a break.

I concur the the A button gripe. It's a little cramped. Other than that, this game is awesome!

Well, Wi-Fi works for me. Although far from perfect, it's pretty impressive all things considered.

Well, let's have a friend code, then. :)

Yep, same complaint here. I have to limit my playing to short 15-20 minute at a time stints. I'm really pissed at the Wi-Fi. I've been in the lead 5 times so far during races only to have people disconnect so I don't get the win. I'm not saying I'm great at the game, but my record looks really bad because all my wins are taken away and I sit and take my medicine on the loses.

Anyway here is my friend code
038714
221409

Josh H 11-16-05 06:44 PM

Decided to pass on this for now. Told my gf not to pick it up for my b-day. Just don't have time to play it right now, and I've been burned out on Mario Kart for the past couple games anyway.

Looks like the online play is the same sucky shit as on other consoles with the fucking quitters as well. Lame as hell when a race/battle only takes a few minutes.

Gallant Pig 11-16-05 07:29 PM

You guys should start a Mario Kart DS friend code thread. Too bad there's no buddy list or anything that kinda sucks.
