They're actually re-making the first game in the Metroidvania games - Symphony of the Night. Nothing so far since it was originally announced.

Just beat the puppet master boss. This is easily the best DS game to date. Funny how a style as old as Super Metroid is still better than most games made today.

Source? Im not trying to sound like an ass I just wanna see where it was said.

Superboy 10-07-05 04:16 AM

Read it in EGM but it was a long time ago - before the release of the PSP. I'll try to find an article online but so far nothing's come up. Perhaps it was canned.

pork-chop123 10-07-05 12:38 PM

Any deals anywhere?

Josh H 10-07-05 01:01 PM

Still haven't heard from EB about my online preorder with instore pick up, so I guess that's not a good option for anyone wanting a game right away.

Oh well, no biggie for me as I have a crazy weekend and wouldn't be able to play anyway.

Superboy 10-07-05 02:56 PM

Not to threadcrap...but this game has so far been very underwhelming. The graphics and music have been exceptional...but I keep getting Deja Vu. I would only recommend this game for people that LOVE castlevania or who've never played any game in the series before. Otherwise...you're not missing anything you haven't seen before. It's also much too easy, something that really plagued Harmony of Dissonance and that was apparantly fixed in Aria of Sorrow. I remember playing games like Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night for weeks...and still not getting everything. 100% is only a few hours away for me.

The touch screen functionality is just OK. I would feel comfortable with developers not trying to tack on extras that "take full advantage" of the hardware. Hey, if they make a good game, it's still a good game, despite it not taking advantage of the hardware. If they're just good GBA-esque games that have better graphics and sounds, that's good enough for me.

Can't say enough about the graphics and sound - gorgeous all around. I'm very excited for what they'll be able to do in the next DS Castlevania now that they're used to the hardware. I don't even want to think about what could happen with a 2D PSP Castlevania.

As far as the gameplay goes, it's AoS with a fleshed-out soul system and touchscreen support. The touch parts are an embarrassment - the kind of half-baked, gimmicky crap that should never make it past the discussion stage - but the soul system has been expanded for the better and the second quest sounds terrific. If the level design and bosses are up to par, this looks to be the best of the "Metroidvanias."

ETA: Play this game with headphones at least once!

I second that, the music is awesome, I have it hooked up to my stereo :). The graphics are equally good, nice and animated. I can just see this game on Jack thompson's list for teaching children how to draw satanic symbols .

darkside 10-07-05 08:59 PM

I've put in 7 hours so far and I'm at 64%. There is plenty of gameplay here for me. I'm having fun trying to get all the souls and 100% the castle. Not in any real hurry for this one to end except of course to play it again with Julian.

Superboy 10-08-05 02:01 AM

Well, the game's done. But it was still great. I'm probably going to push for 100%, but playing as Julian and the boss rush are just extras...I would prefer a nice, meaty quest.

darkside 10-08-05 11:54 PM

Just now finished it up. I finished with 100% of the castle completed and got the good ending in 15:10.

Freaking excellent game especially the huge final boss.

For finishing with the good ending and 100% I got Boss Rush, Hard Mode, Sound Test (now I can listen to Vampire Killer whenever I want) and it also unlocked Julius mode. I thought you only got that one with the bad ending, but apparently you get it either way.

Easily my favorite DS game.

Josh H 10-09-05 09:42 AM

Called the EB, my copy is in and has been for a few days. Guess they just didn't bother calling me. Anyway, will pick it up in a bit.

Josh H 10-10-05 11:58 AM

Picked mine up yesterday, but didn't get a chance to play yet.

Was happy that I got $30 out of Mario Baseball. I felt it was worth about $20 for the time I played, and that's what it worked out to in the end.

gameover2k2 10-10-05 08:36 PM

i'm considering buying this, for the people who play this game, how long does it take you guy to complete 100% and do you really need a guide to finish the game? I don't have much time to play game, but very interested in this game.. if it's not 'that long' then i may rent it and try to finish it rather than buying it.. thanx

I beat it with 100% on the castle in 15 hours and I didn't hurry. You don't need a guide to beat the game, but a couple of the hidden breakable floors and ceiling are hard to find if you really want 100%.

I'm still playing it though. Its a good game and getting 100% of the souls takes a lot of time especially figuring out the 3 hidden souls. Not to mention Julius mode is excellent.

You can easily get 25-30 hours out of this game if you want to.

The highlight of the game for me was stepping into the Silenced Ruins the first time and hearing Vampire Killer playing in the background. 2D Castlevania is still one of the best franchises out there.

AllHallowsEve 10-10-05 10:22 PM

Beat the game last night. Took me 3 days at a couple hours a day. Decent game, but I dont have the interest to complete 100%.

On to something new now. I just have a short attention span for games nowadays.

Outlaw 10-11-05 05:09 PM

What familiars are you guys using? I am using the Great Armor and it seems pretty good. I've gotten quite a few like the Bat, Harpy, Quetzacotal, what others are there?

asianxcore 10-12-05 09:21 PM

had the game for a little over a week and finished it up today :) I put a little over 13 hours into it, with about 70% of the souls collected, and 99% of the castle explored. I am trying to go back and get that 1% of the castle I didn't explore haha. also I am going to try to collect some more souls, and upgrade my other weapons.

awesome game, easily one of my favorite games this year.

tanman 10-12-05 11:44 PM

It's games like these that really exacerbate my OCD. I have about 15 hours and have been collecting souls along the way. Some of them are really cool. I really wish they made it at least just a little bit easier to collect souls. Even after maxing out on all the luck items including the soul eater ring it is still a pain.

Superboy 10-13-05 01:22 AM

Finished the game at 100%. The overall game wasn't anything special...but the bosses and the new souls were great. A great game.

Welcome to Aria of Sorrow.

Josh H 10-13-05 12:46 PM

Played about an hour and love it as expected.

Best part is having the map on the top screen. I hated having to pause all the time and check the map in the GBA games and the metroids. Much nicer just to be able to look up and see where you're going, where the nearest save room is, etc.

Josh H 10-14-05 10:30 PM

Put in some more time this evening (really should have been studying).

Fantastic game. Pure 2d gaming bliss. Have about 25% of the map uncovered so far, and just go the double jump.

These 2D castlevanias are bar none my favorite games of this generation. Nothing on the consoles comes close.

AllHallowsEve 10-15-05 02:44 PM

Can someone please put what the "good ending" is in spoilers? I finished with 62% and got a lame incredibly short ending that seemed very open ended. Endings to many games seem like too little payoff if you ask me.

Spoiler:
To unlock the true endings you must fight Paranoia before you fight Dario for the second time. Once you beat Paranoia you get the ability to enter mirrors. When you walk in the room with Dario you will see a fire demon in the mirror. Instead of beating Dario you want to use Paranoia's soul to enter the mirror and fight Aguni (the fire demon) instead.

Now the key to getting the happy ending comes when you get the fifth seal. When you enter the room protected by the fifth seal in the center of the garden area you must be wearing Mina's Talisman. If you are not you will get the bad ending and unlock Julius mode. If you are wearing the Talisman you will be on your way to the good ending though you have a ways to go to finish the game. You get Julius mode even if you get the happy ending, but it is fun to at least see the bad ending so I would do it both ways.
