True, but if we are going by the most recognizable, there are a lot more people older than 15 than there are under it...

The question comes down to recognizability. Who would be more recognizable to an 80 year old grandmother? Mario or Pac-Man? I think that would determine the most iconic character in history. I think it would be Pac-Man. Mario has been in 100 games, but who do you recognize below:

Can you recognize your little plumber in any kind of food? Pac-Man isn't going down without a fight!
yup, i have to agree. the only way to be the world's most recognizable is that everybody recognizes you in some type of food product! any other way there is no shot.

You're joking. If you asked 100 non-gamers who Samus Aran is, I doubt even three would answer correctly. Ask them who Mario and Luigi or Pac-Man is, and I bet they'd tell you.

Some of those 100 would probably call her metroid if they saw a picture.

Yeah, you'd definately get more Metroid answers than Samus Arans. In fact, I bet more gamers would answer Metroid than Samus Aran. There are enough gamers who do not play the series and do not know anything about it beyond the name.

Michael: Personally, I've never seen a pizza in that shape cause I eat it too fast to notice. ^_^ I do believe that I mentioned the popsicles and didn't he also have a cereal for a while? Sure, they are obscure and don't have the life of pizza. Also I now hate you because I haven't at in the past 17 hours and I'm sitting here typing this post about food products. I think Pac-man will put up a fight, but if you chew thirty times he should go down pretty easy.

Chris: The tabloid part throws the entire poll into a question of validation. Most polls are not done correctly and the only way to get a true answer is to have everyone take the poll. Maybe we could do it American Idol style.

Outer-edge: I disagree about the split between arcades and consoles. The first three Mario games were phenomenal and performed well in the arcades. I remember playing Mario 3 in the bowling alley every chance I got. I think I've played Pac-man once or twice off a console and that was outside a Wal-mart.

Deadpool: Yes, Mario first appeared in Donkey Kong as Jump-man. Later he was renamed by... I can't remember his name. His company was hired by Nintendo to distribute their arcade games.
