Okay, I'll admit it.. I enjoyed it.. for what's it was.
It's essentially the anime version of a Michael Bay movie. Turn off your brain and enjoy the action.. because if you try to think about the story or the emotion (which there is none) you'll just insult yourself. If I had just gotten out of anime, I'd probably hate this movie.. because it's pretty much typical TO THE LETTER of every other action/sci-fi anime out there. But seeing as I've been out of that for five or six years now (and I'm familiar with the characters and setting) I was able to take it and just have fun with it. For the first part of it, I thought it was going to be overtly pretentious, self-mastubatory and just trying WAY too hard to be "cool," which is what I was expecting, but once the monster appeared and attack Midgar I was pretty much glued to the action. At one point in the ending something happens that for a brief second, makes you think they're going to jump back into a poor attempt to force "emotion" into the movie (much like the "famous" scene from the game), but it's just a tease and thankfully ends on a good note.
But damn.. the soundtrack totally fucking rules. I am buying it the second it comes out. The JENOVA and One Winged Angel remixes at the end were SO yummy, I'm guessing that's the version of OWA they played at the "More Friends" concert and I was afraid I'd never get to hear it.. but wow. It's great!

Actually the OWA version at More Friends was a lot more different and way cooler. Sorry
.
I saw the movie yesterday, and I really enjoyed it as well. But I had to do a lot of explaining to my girlfriend who had not played the game. The action is enjoyable enough for the non FF fans, as well as the beautiful visuals. Uooryaa~

I've concluded that this movie is really just an excuse to create a series of action sequences starring Final Fantasy VII characters...but they're some darn good action sequences.
The movie starts off slow, but once it hits the halfway point, it's basically just one insane fight scene after another until the end or your brain explodes, whichever comes first.

you know, i hate using hyperbole, especially ghetto slangish sounding hyperbole, but...
that was fvcking sick!!
(i can't imagine watching it with people who had aren't familiar with the story/game, though. they'd probably interrupt at every other line for an explanation and most likely not appreciate most of the holy-shit moments)
anyway, that ruled

i never played ffvii, just watched one of my roommates play for a bit. i think as long as you're familiar with the world of FF (not necessarily vii), then you will enjoy it.
you DO know what a bahamut is, right?

Yes I do.
I even know the names of several of the characters from FFVII, but I don't know the plot line... only that someone super important dies.
Thanks guys, I think I'll give it a look.

I'm about 15 minutes in, and it's making me want to play FF7 again. It's been so long that I am having trouble remembering the characters. I'm getting 7 and 8 all jumbled together in my head I think. I have been meaning to go back and play it anyway so I guess this is as good an excuse as any. Can I use a PS2 memory card for PS1 games if I'm using the PS2 to play them?

I think this could be the biggest anime title ever. Think about it : Tons of buzz, no theatrical run for the curious and a built-in audience of fans, many of whom have never even been remotely interested in anime before.
And if that isn't enough, it gets a
from Pixy. That's like when John Lennon called Band On The Run "a great album" -- High praise from your toughest critic.Anyone know what special features will be on the DVD?

Very fun to watch, and I will most likely pick up the DVD for the action scenes, and to see how different the translation is. Some of the dialogue struck me as rather strange.

For the English version, I hope they keep all the voices they had from Kingdom Hearts.

No, I do have my fair share of good complaints about it but the mesh of music and action during the last half made me disregard those. I really do think a big part of it was that I haven't seen a Japanese anime for a very long time and was able to "put up with" the clichés running rampart in this one. That said, there's no way this is going to be anywhere close to being the biggest anime title.. it's already got a very limited audience (those who've played the game) and the honest truth is that once you get past the frantic action, there's literally NOTHING else for this one to fall back on.

Just finished watching it. It was awesome! However it is pretty evident that it was made FOR FFVII fans. If you aren't familiar with it, you won't like it, and will be scratching your head.
That being said, the animation is the nicest for a CG movie made, and the action was great. It has the most insane battles I've ever seen, not for the faint of heart of motion sick, there were a number of times where I was just in awe, Cloud is a badass. And I agree with pixy, the music was freaking incredible. I'll probably buy the US version if it ever comes out and I have the money.
