Looking for a GOOD wireless router (use with XBOX LIVE)

Ok, I'm looking for a good wireless router to use with XBOX LIVE. I currently have a wired one, but would like to upgrade in case I buy a PSP and XBOX 360 and a laptop.

I would prefer it to STILL have the ability to plug in ethernet connections so I could still have my XBOX hard-wired...if I want.

Alright man this is an easy one as BeanDip and I both have this basic setup and neither of us have any complaints

The Netgear WGR614 wireless G router is cheap as hell and works flawlessly heres the link

We both use wireless bridges then to connect the xbox but we use different ones here is the one I use.

The router also has 4 wired ports you can utilize and at around $70 for the combo it's a steal. I hope this helps man.

Just an FYI, I recently bought a 802.11b wireless Netgear(new). It worked for all of 5 minutes. My brother, an IT guy had no luck with it either and talked to tech support forever trying to get it to work. No luck. They shipped me a new one for the cost of shipping(which somehow was $15). Same deal, 5 minutes and it was dead. Not a very solid product line if you ask me. We are both sworn off Netgear.

I prefer linksys products and shy away from netgear. D-link has a gaming router and I've had mixed results with their products, but many of my clients like them.

We got a D-Link wireless, not sure exactly which one it was (it's at home, where there is no internet until tomorrow), but it worked great, out of the box, no config for Xbox and I had no problems using my nYKo Net Extenders either. That router worked great with Vonage (can you tell we're DYING without internet?) too. It was like $20 after rebates at Best Buy, but that was like 4 months ago.

Home network hardware is a lot like Hard Drives, in that people have their favorite brands and most hated brands, and most of the time their experiences directly conflict. On person has had brand x for 10 years with no problems, while another guy had to return brand x 5 times in a month, etc.

That said, what are people using as a wireless nic for the xbox? To me it seems like the "gaming adapters" are horribly expensive, are my price expectations too low? Is the an equivilent non-gaming version of this that may be cheaper?

Just to throw my 2 cents in...I used a Netgear 802.11b wireless router for months and had very little problems with it. I just recently upgraded to a Linksys 802.11g router and it's great as well. Like BabiG said, it's more of a brand preference than anything.

I use a netgear 802.11b wireless router in our living room, I have never had any problems with it. In my bedroom I have my computer hard wired to a linksys WRT54g wireless router, which is connected wirelessly to the router in the living room. You can modify the WRT54g to act as a wireless bridge so basically the devices you have hard wired in just think they are hooked up directly to a wired connection. I keep meaning to hook up the xbox in my room as well so I can get on XBOX live. This solution has worked great for me since I can have both my XBOX and my computer hooked up wirelessly to the living room, otherwise I would need an wireless card for my comp, and a wireless adapter for my game consoles (which usually only have one port). This is a good preperation IMO since the WRT54g can take 4 devices connected, that's enough for all three consoles and a computer to be connected next gen.

You can find a how to on making the WRT54g a wireless bridge on from this anandtech link. It wasn't too difficult.

Thanks.....I'll just pick one up when the time comes. I would probably just plug my XBOX in direct still, since I have the cable already ran. The wireless would be nice for the PSP and Laptop (when I get them)

One more question:

What would be the cheapest way for me to go wireless?

I already have a WIRED router connected to my PC (which I use my XBOX for, so the cable is ran already)

Would it be cheaper to just plug an access point into the router or just get a NEW wireless router?

How does a PSP access a wireless network? It should work with just a wireless router, right?

So, any more suggestions to this question?

I have the DS, PSP, and will be getting the 360. I want to get a wireless router for these systems. Do you all the routers out now work with these. Is there features I should be looking for? I know know zero about this. Will the current routers work with ps3 and revolution?

Thanks for any help

Just about all of the routers that are out now will work with the DS/PSP. The important standards that you may look for are 802.11b and 802.11g.

802.11b is the cheapest, uses 2.4Ghz frequency, (similar to a cell phone) and has the slowest maximum speed, 11Mbps.

802.11g supports 802.11b and 802.11a, (lesser known format), also uses the 2.4 Ghz frequency, but is traditionally more expensive, but much faster at 54Mbps. Some appliances (cell phone, microwave, etc) will interfere with the routers though.

You can go wrong with getting a 802.11g router. It mixes the best of the 802.11a and 802.11b technologies, but if you are pressing for cash, get a 802.11b.

Hope this helps.

802.11g has nothing to do with 802.11a, but that's a moot point. You'll pay a high premium for an a/g router, you don't need it.

Odds are you don't even need the faster 802.11g (54Mbps) router, but it is essentially the big brother to the 802.11b (11Mbps) protocol. That and the g's are not much more expensive than a 802.11b router.

Since 11Mpbs is faster than most home broadband ISPs, 802.11b is all you really need. 802.11g is nice for the future and any in-house LAN stuff.

That is not what I said. I said that the 802.11g router, supports the 802.11a standard. I said that it mixes the best of the two standards, The 802.11g combines the 802.11a's 54Mbps speed, to go with the 2.4Ghz frequency for the 802.11b.

I'm saying that 802.11g devices do not natively work on 802.11a networks and vice versa. I see what you're saying, the best of both worlds: 2.4Ghz range and 802.11a's 54Mbps. 802.11g is backward-compatible with 802.11b which is one of the major advantages due to 802.11b's widespread market penetration. But to say that 802.11g supports the 802.11a protocol is not accurate. However, as I said, there are routers that support both protocols and will blend them together, but that is way overkill. I don't even know if the DS/PSP/360/Rev/PS3 support 802.11a networks anyway. Do they?

Didn't mean to highjack the thread this way. But I think gimmepilotwings and I both agree that 802.11g is the way to go unless you really can't afford anything above 802.11b.

FWIW, I have a D-Link DI-624 that I've used with a wireless bridge for xbox live and have never had a problem. I'm hoping that continues with the DS in a few weeks.

I say AVOID the DI-624 wireless router. I still have mine, but it likes to reboot on me at random intervals. Sometimes it does it every 10 minutes. Go with a LINKSYS....I will swap mine out soon enough.

I know. My coworker hates D-Link networking and Western Digital HDDs, but I've never had a problem. Had a 713P before I went wireless. He uses a Netgear router, I believe.
