While I am a bit bummed that there is limited backwards compatibility it doesn't change my mind about getting one. When I get the 360 I'm going to use my XBOX as a jukebox so I'm still going to keep it hooked up and running. I'm not bothered by this move that much but I can understand why others will and I think it's going to hurt MS but I'm just not sure how much.

I still like the Xbox360 hardware, but damn the Sony interview totally killed the MS one. None of the games looked impressive after seeing the tech demos on the PS3. Granted Sony didn't show much in the way of in game footage, but none the less they did their damage to Microsoft and defintely put doubt in peoples minds. I think the limited backwards compatibility is going to be a major killer to the Xbox360. Hopefully MS will release the list of games supported soon because you know many people would want to use the Xbox as a trade in towards the 360.
MS still has the big advantage in online though. Live is better than any plan Sony has mentioned to this point and we will have to see if this is enough to carry the day for MS. I totally see why Nintendo wanted to focus on another area besides hardware. There was no way anyone could touch the PS3 from that standpoint so everyone is trying to put the focus elsewhere. MS will really have to market Live and have some nice exclusive games to make people forget the PS3 come Christmas. |

I thought the Microsoft presentation was pretty shitty. Lots of rhetoric, not much substance. Then again, we already knew most of the features they talked about.
They were trying too hard to look cool and hip and really didn't say much. DoA4 trailer was really the only bright spot in the presentation. |
Well, I'm sure Halo2 should be backward compatible. Hopefully I can play it on LIVE with XBOX 360 vs XBOX users. I know I want to get a 360, but my friends might be slow on the bandwagon.
I have two XBOX's anyways....so I could always just sell one and have a backup one (although I'm running out of inputs on my TV if I do that!) |

Well, I use my Receiver to switch between my two HD component inputs. I have my DVR cable box and my XBOX. My DVD player is just hooked into a normal component input (since it's only 480p anyways). My Mits TV only has one HD input that is capable of 1080i

The limited backwards compatibility is a bit of a kick in the balls. I can only pray that they are really just being cautious and don't want to claim that 100% games will work when there might be a few % that do some quirky stuff and just may not work...
but still, i'm on the same page as pixy. I want support for panzer dragoon, JSRF, HOTD3, Gun Valkyrie.... to be honest, Halo, KOTOR are pretty much played out for me at this stage. Have to wait and see... |

I guess some people really like backwards ability....to be honest, I NEVER played a PS1 game on my PS2 when I owned it. Althought, I can see XBOX being a bit more important since it's still NEW to some people. I just hope if they do make it backwards...that LIVE is included in that (which it should be)

Anybody get to the party last night? I started feeling a little sick when I went home, so I figured I'd lay down a bit and go at 7 or 8. I woke up this morning at 6am. Yes, I slept instead of getting to see the Chemical Brothers, The Killers and getting a limited-to-the-partygoers faceplate for the 360. Yes, I did that. Didn't know all that would be at the party, but I sure got a lot of sleep. Heading up to the roof right now...

well at least they made the xbox controller better, i never understood why they had those stupid little white/black buttons where they were. they could of just had them on the top. still, i will *not* be buying this thing at launch, no HDTV yet for me, most likely I will buy a new console and TV in 2007. We'll see how it goes.
|
No you don't Lionhead. I'm not buying into your crummy Fable 2 hype.

Final Fantasy XI is such an odd choice; I don't think they're going to be able to do much with it graphically since it will have to be tied down to the limitations of the PS2 version, much like the PC version. It may be higher resolution with more effects, but overall it'll still be rooted to the lowest common version. This, of course, information from my friend who hasn't done a single thing other than play this damn game for the last 1.5 years, it's pretty creepy.
I think they need to have a unique MMORPG on the new Xbox. Xbox had Phantasy Star, which was identical to its Dreamcast version and now the Xbox 360 is getting a PS2 MMORPG. What the hell happened to True Fantasy Online? |
How is selective backwards compatabily even possible? Are they going to re-release the best selling titles to fit xbox 360?
If you put in a game that isn't a best seller does a screen pop up and say "fuck you" ? |

If you put in a game that isn't a best seller does a screen pop up and say "fuck you" ? Incredibly lame. Especially in the face the PS3 being backwards compatible with the PS2 and PSone, and the Revolution being backwards compatible with the Gamecube and able to download every Nintnendo made NES, SNES, and N64 game. |
Bad bad move by Microsoft. I can't believe they didn't put backwards compatibility high on the priority list when PS and Nintendo are doing it.

That's just what I've been reading from the threads here. Stuff people where posting form gaming sites said it was emulation. I thought it sounded fishy too, but I could see it working if they just program it for a few big games.

I think people are overreacting, personally.
http://news.com.com/A+gaggle+of+new+...53.html?tag=nl At Monday's event, Microsoft also announced plans to make all games from its previous console compatible with the upcoming Xbox 360. However, few details were given regarding how, or when, updated support for Xbox titles would be achieved. Microsoft representatives did say they would start with more popular titles such as "Halo," then move down the line. ... "Backward-compatibility is not the reason people buy a new system," said David Hufford, Microsoft Xbox group product manager. "The perception is that it is significant. We've put all our energy into new titles, but since our consumers have asked for it...we've made it a goal to make all titles backward-compatible." |
Interesting. It's still a big deal to me, but it's all a moot point for me if it still has the same mostly FPS, Sports and Driving game line-up as the X-box. In that case I'll just keep my X-box until I finish the games I want to play on it, and sell it toward a PS3 or Revolution.
But I'm not giving up hope yet with the RPG's from the former Final Fantasy guy giving me a little hope things will be better (for my gaming tastes) with the 360. |
I'm reserving judgement for the list of games that will work. It could be tens, it could be hundreds. Also, Microsoft could incorporate a feature into Xbox Live that would increase the number of games it supports with a software update, so it may be a incremental thing.
|
Yeah, I'm reserving judgement too, but not totally since the other two have full, no hassle backwards compatibility right out of the box.
|
I remember reading how Microsoft would need to emulate the nVidia card or drivers or something in order to let old games work on the new system. This would cost them money for royalties. To keep that cost at a minimum, they are obviously only going to do it a few games at a time to see if it is even necessary, instead of including it on every console and paying those fees upfront.

It is a half assed attempt by MS. |

What the hell happened to True Fantasy Online? However if FFXI follows the Everquest model then they will bring out new expansion packs which will have graphical and even engine updates. They will only be available on pc and 360, and while ps2 owners will still be able to play the game, they won't be able to go into the new areas. At least that's how it could potentially work. |

Is Wi-Fi internet built into the Xbox360 or is that an add on as well? That was a $100 add on for the original Xbox and I thought for sure it would support Wi-Fi right out of the box this time.

I have to say it's a bit depressing looking at the 360 game preorder page at EB.com and seeing 59.99 everywhere. I knew it was bound to happen eventually but it just means I'll be a bit more picky about the games I buy right away.
|
Yep it is a shame. games have hovered around $50 for 15+ years with an odd cartridge here or there costing more. All of a sudden MS is in the business and $50 doesn't cut it. Bill Gates must be putting in that 37th wing to his house.
