May 6, 2005 - Sega of America has officially announced the long-awaited follow-up to the company's popular Sega Genesis title Gunstar Heroes. Sega, along with the original development studio Treasure, have been working together on Gunstar Super Heroes, an original title and the official sequel set for release on the Game Boy Advance this fall.
Blue and Red, the two lead characters from Gunstar Heroes return for a second go-round in Gunstar Super Heroes. The duo will fight a seemingly endless onslaught of bad guys of an evil empire that's set to resurrect the God of Ruin. Both Red and Blue will have their own paths during this adventure, each character having his own set of challenges across six massive levels.
Gunstar Super Heroes is Treasure's latest GBA production since Sega's Astro Boy: Omega Factor, and Sega promises that the team will truly max out the graphical capabilities of the Game Boy Advance hardware. Treasure will pay homage to many of Sega's classic brands, with levels, graphics, and soundtracks based on After Burner, Thunder Blade, and Galaxy Force, and other Sega titles.
We've scored a batch of exclusive screenshots which you can check out by hitting the link below. The game will make its debut at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in just a week's time, and we'll have full hands-on impressions then.

Another preview:
What the hell? This better not be another Advance Guardian Heroes.
You can't, for example, combine weapons this time around -- but in exchange you're given access to three different weapons at all times (Red and Blue each have their own unique variances on Rapid, Homing, and Explosive fire).
It may lack a two-player cooperative mode...

Oh man, the combo weapons was a key-feature of the original; though focusing on three main weapons could ultimately lead to tighter gameplay and more strategy based on using the right weapons at the right times instead of picking your favorite over-powered combo and sticking with that the entire game. Lack of a two-player mode won't be all that damning in my opinion as it IS on Gameboy.
Dan, did you pick up Advance Guardian Heroes? A friend of mine who is a huge Treasure nut got it on release day and told me he was really let down by it which kept me from buying it. I've been wondering if the game is still pretty good as long as expectations held to a love of the original aren't massive. Verdict?

Well I dug up an answer from a Treasure fan-site:
Advance Guardian Heroes was released and recieved much criticism. "It's nowhere near as good as the original", they say. "The graphics and characters are lame", they whine. "This game sucks" has been heard on more the one occassion. What the hell is wrong with you people?
As far as I can tell, Advance Guardian Heroes is a lot fun. Hell, I'd rather play this over Astro Boy any day. In fact I've played through this game a handful of times while I've only played through Astro Boy once in the time I've had
So what's actually wrong with this game? I suppose the action's been toned down when compared to the original Guardian Heroes' ridiculous onslaughts of enemies. You rarely fight more then four guys at once in this game, but that can often prove more then troublesome for our poor hero. The lack off buttons also means there's only one melee button this time, but when combined with hitting directions on the d-pad you can pull of a variety of moves.
I don't know what people expected. The loss of the plane system is not that big a deal, sure the new characters are about as generic as can be, and I still can't figure out how anything in this game could possibly make sense in connection with the first one, but I don't care. I have fun playing this game.
I guess the lack of multiple paths is a little disappointing, and some of the levels are really boring, but so were some of the levels in the original. Walk forward, fight the next batch of enemies, it still hasn't changed.
I haven't spent any time with the multiplayer so I can't comment on it, but it's one thing I'm sure this game simply can't compare with the originals multiplayer. But since I can't actually test this theory, it will remain just that.
So, if you like to play your Treasure games on the go, or just like beating up knights and other... things, then pick the game up. All those people who say it suck are probably just mentally ill.

He doesn't even mention what is probably the single biggest complaint about AGH, namely the horrendous slowdown. So much of the game revolves around perfectly timed blocks and counterattacks (there are parts you literally can't pass if you don't counter) and that all goes out the window when there are more than a few characters on-screen and the framerate chugs (which is often). The Saturn version wasn't always smooth as silk either, but we're talking tiny sprites with next to no animation here (and the Saturn version didn't require nanosecond-perfect timing either). If he can ignore the slowdown and enjoy the game regardless, good for him, but to call the disappointed Treasure faithful "mentally ill" without once acknowledging the key reason for the disappointment is pretty damn low. I don't think the loss of the plane system is insigificant, either, since the plane system provided most of the strategic fighting element in the first game; in AGH the most effective strategy is to stay off to the side of the screen and fire a bunch of projectile attacks until your magic runs out, then jump back in until it refills and repeat ad nauseam. At least until you get to the invariably terrible platforming segments, anyway. Without the rampant slowdown it would've been a decent Final Fight/Double Dragon clone, but either way it's not much of a Guardian Heroes sequel.
