I tend not to care so much about what's under the hood of these systems. Quite frankly, it's just a bunch of gaudy numbers that most of us don't understand the technical details behind. When the system releases come closer, i'll take a look at some analysis behind what may give me nicer looking games, but how many GFLOPS and what not doesn't mean anything to me. It's always curious to me why people would avoid or take more interest in the first Xbox because of the common PC parts inside.
Personally, i like the design of the 360. Looks sleek, and the wireless controllers are a plus. Pricing, especially for any addons, will be rather interesting as they come up. |

Sadly, I think that makes up a good portion of this particular forum. Seriously, you've got people that post constantly on specs and marketing, rambling on about the flips and flops and sandals of a system, the winky-woos, the hoo-has and putting creepy religious-like faith in hype numbers and megahertz and never once post about actually fucking playing a game. |
I think that's due to two things.
1. This is a DVD site that just happens to have a video game forums, so there's not that high a number of hard core gamers here. Seems to be mostly people in to home theater stuff who are casual gamers. 2. Not much game discussion due to not being many regulars really, and the regulars have different gaming tastes and habits. i.e. I rarely buy any game at launch, so buy the time I get around to playing a game, any discussion on it died long ago. For instance I'm now playing Zelda: Minish Cap and Metroid Prime 2, and them moving on to Ratchet and Clank 2. I'd like to discuss more, but everyone else already beat those months ago, so I just end up talking to myself when I bump the threads. :D I can't really explain all the fascination with specs and such. I think we just have one or two diehard supporters for each console that try to promote their system of choice anyway possible. I don't get it, I just care about the games 90% of the time with price and other things making up the other 10%. |
I think everyone need to stop the bickering. (See my post in DS vs PSP) But in all reality it doesn't matter what you people think because:

It's not my only source, tho. 2. New Xbox 360 images - the real deal? Rob Fahey 09:57 25/04/2005 Latest image "leak" ties in with previously reported design features A new image purporting to be the Xbox 360 console has been "leaked" onto the Internet, and is being widely reported as the final design for the hardware, which is due to be revealed in an MTV special in under three weeks time. The new picture shows a small platinum/silver unit with a concave design, which appears to be designed to either sit flat or stand like a miniature tower unit - all of which ties in with the information from a British source who has seen the new console which we published two weeks ago. Crucially, the design also fits perfectly with a zoomed-in teaser image of the console released on viral marketing "game" site OurColony, and the features on the case certainly seem to fit with other reports about the Xbox 360's functionality. Interestingly, no controller ports are visible on the front of the system - the console supports wireless controllers out of the box, while USB connections for wired controllers are apparently concealed behind a small panel on the right hand side of the fascia. Two slots for memory units appear on the front panel, while a "hood" supposedly concealing the location of the removable hard drive module is to be found on the left hand end of the console (the top of the unit if stood upright). The size of the unit can be divined by looking at the DVD tray, which occupies almost half of the length of the console - suggesting a device far smaller and sleeker than the current Xbox console. It's not clear where the "leak" came from, assuming of course that it is a leak at all and not simply a very clever mock-up; however, the original image which appeared online was in CMYK colour format, which is generally used in images destined for professional printing systems. As might be expected, Microsoft's reaction to the image has been to issue their standard response: "Microsoft don't comment on rumours and speculation." The firm plans to unveil the Xbox 360 (even the name of which remains unconfirmed, officially) in an MTV special to be broadcast in North America on May 12th, followed by international broadcasts on May 13th. A casual gamer is someone who plays games, but has other hobbies they enjoy more that take up more of their spare time. |

Personally I wish PS3 was coming out next year, it would get Blu-Ray out there and the HD DVD format on BluRay would hopefully win out. And PS3 is coming out next year. It has been confirmed to come with Blu-Ray support. The only snag is that Sony and Toshiba are in talks to combine the two forms - Blu-Ray and HD-DVD - into a new form. The two solutions mentioned so far are to use Blu-Ray hardware and HD-DVD software (Sony) or to use HD-DVD hardware and Blu-Ray layering (Toshiba). Hopefully one of the two current forms will be choosen so that the hardware won't get delayed. If they decide on a completely new form, hardware will get delayed 12-18 months, meaning the potential delay of the PS3 til 2007. |
I think it's been pretty much confirmed that the 360 will have a regular DVD drive. Not only because the new standard isn't figured out yet, but also to keep costs down.
But I'm wondering -- will there be some sort of option to swap the DVD drive with a bigger, better one a year or two down the road? Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, whatever. That would be cool. |

There are some people that don't agree with me. That’s why it’s my opinion. And I can't see why one game (resident evil M content) would make the system not aimed at younger gamers. But I still stick with what I said before only a 485 MHz CPU granted it is IBM 18 micron process, but it isn't a PPC chip. And the audio is only 16bit DSP. Come on. That’s fine people don't share my view, but the damn thing is still a cube and looks like the puzzle box from Hellraiser so it is creepy and evil. :yack:

i just saw some more pictures. i want one NOW damnit!!! and i'm getting the hard disk too.
|
Anyword on how much the HD add on will cost?
If it's cheap, and buying one enables backwards compatibility in the cheaper X-box 360, the odds of me getting one would increase a good deal. |

But I just thought of something. Game companies would probably have to release two versions of a game -- one on the new badass disc, and a "dumbed-down" version on a regular DVD for those that didn't have the "upgrade". I've changed my mind -- it's a bad idea! :D |
If MS released a HD-DVD version at a later date it would probably only be to take advantage of the movie aspect. I think they will have to keep the games on the same media.
