OXM Disc #44 - May 2005

Holy shit... I know some of you get your discs before I do, but I just got it today - quite impressed with the disc. Haven't popped it in yet, so I could be in for disappointment, but based on the description alone I can't wait.

Demos
Doom 3
Psychonauts
Darkwatch: Curse of the West
Pariah
Constantine (hidden demo)

Features
Demonstration: Black Hawk Down
Conker - Where is he Now?
Darkwatch goodies

Video Showcase
Darkwatch trailer
Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
25 To Life
Dead to Rights 2
Lego Star Wars
Elektra DVD
Family Guy/American Dad
Gamefly

p.s. - I looked for the thread for this disc since someone else usually does it before I get my issue, but didn't see one.

Hey Trigger

Thanks for the info on the disc. I've got the last two (#42 Unreal) and (#43 Jade Empire). I got the #42 for the Unreal demo alone and I'm picking that up next week. That demo is one of the best with online playing enabled. I knew about the "Pariah" demo and that was one reason I'm picking up the issue. Besides some pretty good visuals (uses the Unreal Engine) it also has a map editor which has garnered several praises and high marks.

I'll give Doom 3 a shot just to see what all the fuss is about. But I do want to check the demonstration of "Black Hawk Down". This maybe the ultimate online big team battle shooter. It's said to be able to handle up to (56) players at once. It's hard to tell with the online movies how's the gameplay, movement and graphics but still it looks like some serious online fun.

While on this subject, my resubscription was mag only and I missed the March demo disc. Anyone have one they'd be willing to part with? I have extras of some of the older discs.

Pariah didn't do much for me - I wasn't that thrilled about it at E3 either. It was like Halo meets Timesplitters 2 meets Unreal - sort of... but it wasn't as interesting as any of them. When I talked to the dev team at E3 they seemed to be focusing most of their energy on making the Xbox version cool and the PC version was more of an afterthought.

Psychonauts was the stand-out of this disc. I can't friggin wait for that game. The controls were wonky though - the camera was inverted in all directions (relevant to how I usually like to play) and I didn't see a way to change it in the demo. Still, it should really be an outstanding game.

Good to hear about Psychonauts. Isn't it no longer an Xbox exclusive though after Microsoft dropped publishing duties?

I believe Psychonauts is being released simultaneously (published now by Majesco) on PC and Xbox next week, then on PS2 in June. Personally, I'm pretty excited about this one, Tim Schafer is a genius in my mind. Grim Fandango is one of my favorite games of all time.

Yep, I cannot wait to try the Pariah demo....I have the game on Pre-Order, but it would be nice to get a feel for it. Also, everyone seems to love Pyschonauts.

I couldn't get the Darkwatch demo to play, I keeps locking up during the load screen. I was disapointed by the Black Hawk Down video, I was hoping they would show more gameplay footage than they did.
I didn't like Pariah at all, It seems like the enemies came rushing in from no where and it takes about 20 shots to put them down. I got killed within the first 2 minutes of playing.

Should I try boiling the disk? Would that help the lockup issue? And does anyone know how to open up the Constantine Demo?

um dude try two things a can of the compressed air, open the dvd drive try like you would put a game in the xbox and blow air in there along with clean the vents and the fan in back while off. try then. if that doesn't work boil it or buy a new one. or sometimes letting it sit in a human enviroment will help too.

Actually, I read that to get the Darkwatch demo to work, you have to set the date on your XBOX to before March 1st I believe....weird I know. I have yet to pick up the disc yet.

I got it through trial and error yesterday - I'll try and remember off the top of my head...

Hold both triggers and press - A, B, down, back, up, left, right, start, X, black, Y, white

I too am having issues with the Darkwatch demo. I was interested in the game some time ago but it now looks like a title I'll buy cheaper down the road.

Psychonauts really surprised me. I enjoyed the demo a great deal, which is odd because I hate games where I am high up and can fall, and might be getting it now. It's a very trippy setting but it seemed really fun.

Pariah never seemed interesting to me and the demo futrure cemented that feeling. Zero interest in that game.

Certainly the best disc they have sent out in some time.

You are right, I called OXM before I read your post though. As DJ stated, set the X-Box system date before March 1, 2005 and it should work.

I played Darkwatch and haven't had this much fun playing a demo in a long time. I'll be buying the game for sure.

I got an email that says switching it to March 1st 2005 fixes it since the demo has an expiration date on it. They are apparently working on a fixed demo.

that was a dumb thing to do - have an expiration date on a demo for a console. Even dumber to release it after the date. Changing the date won't fuck up anything like saves or Live or whatever will it? I'm guessing 'no.'

Not that I know of. The email just said how to fix it and that there will be a fixed demo soon. It didn't say whether it'd be mailed out to subscribers. Maybe it's for whoever requests it.

You can change your camera settings in Psychonauts. It's under game settings and next to Y invert, there's an X invert setting as well. That should fix it.

All the humor and excellent sound from Voodoo Vince but with even more great platforming -- much larger levels too. I'll be getting this one for sure.

Pariah was a disappointment after some of the stuff I heard. I'll be trying Doom 3 tomorrow.

Wow, lots of negative feedback on Pariah which is [was] the game I am looking forward to the most, although I haven't tried the demo yet.

Psychonauts is hyped as being the Xbox's best platformer to date. I'll certainly keep an eye on this one.

This is why I stopped buying the mags and demo discs a long time ago. So many of them didn't work on Xbox I figured screw it.

I changed the date on my box as mentioned above and the Darkwatch demo worked. It was pretty fun too, I may have to give it a look when it comes out. I have zero interest in Pariah after playing its demo.

Why do they hide demos now? It seems stupid to me.
