Sony Invention Beams Sights, Sounds Into Brain!!

Maybe those PS9 commercials we saw when the PS2 launched weren't so far off base. I would have said this is hogwash except that the article cites New Scientist magazine which is pretty reputable. Plus I guess they have a patent pending on it too.

See article here....

Mixed feelings here...

On one hand, it would help some blind/deaf people experience things they otherwise couldn't.

On the other hand, I could see this being used by advertisers/etc. to force tastes, etc. into your system. I would hate to be walking in the supermarket and have some machine make me taste some nasty broccoli or seafood. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

A Sony Electronics spokeswoman told the magazine that no experiments had been conducted, and that the patent "was based on an inspiration that this may someday be the direction that technology will take us."
Dang, I guess I better get off my ass and patent the frikkin' warp drive.

Hey, everyone! Good news, I just patented "the future." I now legally own all time from now to eternity. You'll receive your bill in the mail.

Nuh-uh, I've already got Los Braingeles. They use starfish for money, they're so advanced.

Anyways, isn't this like how Geordi's visor works? Wouldn't the idea belong to Roddeberry/Okuda/Sternbach whoever was doing the tech stuff back then?

This whole thing is junk. #1) Sony has no research or actual ability to do anything. #2) The patent will expire long before this a reality effectively making the patent worthless.

The only possible benifit is that Sony saw this as a potential roadblock for future games, patented it simply to begin the decay into public domain. Therefore when the time comes they (as everyone else) will have access to it.

I think I heard that on /. that the only reason this was patented was because they referenced the technology in a joke ad as being available on the PS9.

Just the thought that someone or some team is actually trying to develop such a device is amazing.

[Hater rant] I'm suspecting a proprietary storage medium will be utilized for this piece of equipment.[/Hater rant]
