Xbox DVD Play Back Kit Question

I was thinking about buying the Xbox DVD Play Back Kit this weekend but I have a couple of questions and wanted to turn to the experts.

Can the Microsoft Xbox DVD Play Back Kit (Remote Control) be used to turn the Xbox on and off like say a dvd player? Also does the remote control provide other functions such as controlling the music on the xbox dashboard. Thanks in advance for your answers!

No, it can't turn the Xbox on and off.

Yes, I believe it can control music playback from the dashboard (though I'm not 100% sure on that)

To clarify, something like this is neccesary to play DVDs on an Xbox right? It's not like the PS2 that has the system built in.

tks
